In this context, Balkan popular music is contemporary popular folk music produced in the countries of the Balkans and intended for the Balkan markets (specifically, the people in the Western Balkans and diaspora communities). After the global success of “Balkan music” in the world music scene, this term influenced the cultures in the Balkans itself; however, interestingly, in the Balkans themselves “Balkan music” does not only refer to the musical characteristics of this genre—namely, it can also be applied music that derives from the genre of the “newly-composed folk music”, which is well known in the Western Balkans. The most important legacy of “Balkan” world music is the discourse on Balkan stereotypes, hence this article will reveal new aspects of autobalkanism in music. This research starts from several questions: where is “the Balkans” which is mentioned in these songs actually situated; what is the meaning of the term “Balkan” used for the audience from the Balkans; and, what are musical characteristics of the genre called trepfolk? Special focus will be on the post-Yugoslav market in the twenty-first century, with particular examples in Serbian language (as well as Bosnian and Croatian).     Western Kentucky University From the SelectedWorks of Marko Dumančić January 12, 2016 Dehexing Postwar West Balkan Masculinities: The Case of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, 1998 to 2015 Marko Dumancic, Western Kentucky University Available at: https://works.bepress.com/marko-dumancic/3/ The analysis of post-Yugoslav and West Balkan masculinities remains, perhaps unsurprisingly, tethered to the study of interethnic warfare, postconflict reconciliation, and radical right-wing politics (Milojevic´ 2012; Pavlovic´ 1999; Irvine and Lilly 2007; Bracewell 2000; Hayden 2000; Munn 2008).1 Although recent scholarship has explored more fully the position of men who do not benefit from the so-called patriarchal dividend (Milicevic´ 2006; Zarkov 2001), West Balkan men are by and large studied as participants (whether active or passive) in a range of oppressive sociopolitical structures (Capriqi 2012; Rosic´ 2012). Although the scholarship analyzing the correlation between violence and West Balkan masculinity adds a unique and relevant nuance to the study of globalized violence, scholars too often study and depict traditional Balkan masculinities as an exclusively conservative bulwark against modernization writ large without advancing alternative understandings of West Balkan masculinity.2 For the local intelligentsia and urban media outlets too, Balkan masculinity represents forces of isolationism and exclusivist ethno-nationalism, especially in the context of European integration. If one were to judge by current Bosnian, Croatian, or Serbian media commentary, the West Balkans are, no less than they were a hundred years ago, at the crossroads between traditionalization and modernization, with the patriarchal system actively sabotaging modernity’s successful evolution in the region. Thus in both Western scholarship and West Balkan media outlets, masculine identities stand in for antimodern forces: backwardness, parochialism, and (neo-) traditionalism.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 2 Abstract This thesis employs historical, literary and anthropological methods to show how narratives of identity have been expressed in Croatia since 1991 (when Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia) through popular music and through talking about popular music. Since the beginning of the war in Croatia (1991-95) when the state media stimulated the production of popular music conveying appropriate narratives of national identity, Croatian popular music has been a site for the articulation of explicit national narratives of identity. The practice has continued into the present day, reflecting political and social change in Croatia (e.g. the growth of the war veterans lobby and protests against the Hague Tribunal).

    FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism.     ‘It’s all the same, only he’s not here’?: popular music and political change in post- Tuñman Croatia Dr Catherine Baker University of Southampton Abstract: While Franjo Tuñman was the president of Croatia (1990–99), popular music and other forms of entertainment were heavily structured around the key presidential narratives: Croatia’s political and cultural independence from Yugoslavia, and the idea that Croatia’s war effort had been purely defensive. After Tuñman, the Croatian music industry had to cope with media pluralism and the transnational challenges of the digital era. Patriotic popular music expressed an oppositional narrative of Euroscepticism and resistance to the Hague Tribunal, yet Croatia retained and expanded its position in the transnational post-Yugoslav entertainment framework, undermining a key element of Tuñman’s ideology. ‘It’s all the same, only he’s not here’?: popular music and political change in post- Tuñman Croatia In September 2002, after another summer of protests against the government extraditing Croatian generals to the Hague Tribunal, the musician Marko Perković Thompson opened his concert at the Poljud stadium in Split by projecting a video which featured himself, the singer Ivan Mikulić and the Slavonian tamburica ensemble Najbolji hrvatski tamburaši. 1 The song, called ‘Sveto tlo hrvatsko’ (‘Holy Croatian soil’), lauded the late Croatian president Franjo Tuñman, who had died in December 1999. The men sang of Tuñman’s achievements and the sudden appearance of critics who had not dared to defy him when he was alive, and Thompson, a veteran of the Homeland War, contributed a verse remembering the days when friend had stood together with friend to defend Croatia.
