People of the Beetle Generation sit up and take notice when they hear it today. They are strangely touched, experience melancholy, as though remembering something long since lost. It is a sound as unmistakable as the Beetle's silhouette: it buzzes, it putters - all against a background of soothing fan noises – a feeling of euphoria which has underscored our mobility for decades and which was the accompaniment for our independence and for growing prosperity during those years. Beginning in the late 1940's and continuing into the early 1980's, the unmistakable noise of the Beetle left its mark on the sound backdrop of German streets. And in other places, as well, the air-cooled Beetle Boxer was the lead instrument in the noisy traffic concert. This is why Volkswagen advertising from the Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) agency at the end of the 1960's, advertising that is already legendary today, was titled „What the world loves about Germany"; it included a colorfully mixed collection of pictures: Heidelberg, a cuckoo clock, sauerkraut with dumplings, Goethe, a dachshund, the Lorelei – and a Beetle.

  • Can You Guess the Volkswagen?
When you think of VWs, do you think of the Rometsch, Hebmuller or Tempo Truck? Or are you more likely to think of Beetles and Buses? The lesser-known VWs have made a mark on the automotive world just like their more popular siblings. And like any vehicle, they had certain characteristics that were solely their own, or sometimes revised as the years went on. Mid America Motorworks takes a look at the VWs that have been making a quiet mark on the hobby. Volkswagen Type 4 The Volkswagen Type 4 is a mid-sized car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen of Germany from 1968 to 1974 in two-door and four-door sedan as well as two-door station wagon body styles. The Type 4 evolved through two generations, the 411 (1968–72) and 412 series (1972–74). Over its six year production run, Volkswagen manufactured 367,728 Type 4 models, compared with 210,082 of the subsequent Volkswagen K70 with its four year model life. In the United States, VW sold 117,110 Type 4s from 1971 to July 1974. 411 Type 4 1968 – 1972 • 1969 411 4 Door sedan • The engine was aluminum based, more robust than the magnesium based Bug engine and went on to power the VW Bus until 1982. • 411s were 1700cc and 412s 1800cc. • All models had Macpherson strut front suspension. 1968-1969 they had carbs in the US, followed by fuel injection in later years. The horsepower was raised from 68 to 85 bhp by 1973. 412 Type 4 1972 -1974 • Stationwagen or Variant • Manufactured from 1968-1972 as the 411 and late 1972-1974 as the 412.

  • Volkswagen Beetle History
Volkswagen Beetle History The very first Volkswagen type 1 ever produced. Volkswagen Beetle The Volkswagen Type 1 is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. The car was originally known as Käfer, the German word for "beetle," from which the popular English nickname originates. It was not until August 1967 that the Volkswagen corporation itself began using the name Beetle in marketing materials in the US. 1933-1934 VW design drawings In Britain, VW never used the name Beetle officially. It had only been known as either the "Type I" or as the 1100, 1200, 1300, 1500, or 1600 which had been the names under which the vehicle was marketed in Europe; the numbers denoted the vehicle's approximate engine size in cubic centimetres. In 1998, many years after the original model had been dropped from the lineup in most of the world (production continued in Mexico until 2003), VW introduced the "New Beetle" (built on a Volkswagen Golf Mk4 platform) which bore a cosmetic resemblance to the original. 1934 VW Porsche-NSU Its peculiar styling, underpowered motor, rough ride, and high noise levels compared to modern vehicles might have made it a market failure. In its day, though, it was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars, and ultimately the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design (a record that will not take long to be beaten by its younger "cousin" the Type-2 Bus or Kombi, which is still in production in Brazil, with the same basic characteristics of the first series).

  • The MVVC Festival Is Coming!
The MVVC Festival is coming! The MVVC Festival is coming! by Dan Peirce As the Vice President of the club, one of my responsibilities is to Co-chair the MVVC festival with Wayne Burling. I really have always loved this show and all VW shows in general. As this is a large show it has large needs in regards to manpower / sponsors / food venders. Our goal as always is to have fun and make sure that we represent our club and hobby in a positive way to all those attending. Last year was my first go at it and I think we did a pretty good job overall, but as always we can do better! One of the challenges with any big show is getting volunteers for the gates. This year we are going to try to outsource this labor so that more members can enjoy the show instead of working it. Wayne is working with local Ypsilanti groups in order to get the manpower necessary to properly work the gates with our members now having a more managerial role. In other news we are having a Saturday event that is a little more involved than our traditional “cruise”. This year we will have a Ride, Race, Fly and Eat event. This is an event that I feel all will enjoy and will grow as time goes on. The ride part is the parade of VW’s from Riverside Park that will leave at roughly 9:30 am. We will cruise to the Yankee Air Museum. Once there we will have a cone slalom set up that we can have fun timing each other and generally have a blast with our cars in a controlled atmosphere.

  • The Volkswagen Type 3 – Entry Into the Automobile Mid-Size Class
Data sheet The Volkswagen Type 3 – Entry into the automobile Mid-size Class Model history The Type 3 represented Volkswagen’s entry into the mid-size car class after the Beetle (Type 1) and the Volkswagen Bus (Type 2). The Type 3 was first introduced to the public as the Volkswagen 1500 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in 1961. Two versions quickly went into series production: the sedan in September 1961 and the station wagon in February 1962. The hatchback touring sedan (also referred to as TL, for “Tourenlimousine”) was added between 1965 and 1969. All three models were exclusively available as two-door versions. A remodelling of the body into the so-called “long nose” with broad bumpers and large indicator and taillights followed in 1969. Technology Many of the Type 3 features were adopted from the Beetle, such as the backbone chassis and the air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine. It was first available with a 1.5-liter engine displacement and 45 hp (33kW), then a 54-hp (40 kW) version was added in 1963. In 1965 the Volkswagen 1600 with a 1.6-liter engine appeared on the scene; it also produced 54 hp (40 kW), but had more torque than the Volkswagen 1500. Front disc brakes were introduced in 1965, and the 6-volt electrical system was replaced by the more powerful 12-volt version a year later. Production Volkswagen produced a total of 2,587,989 Type 3 units between 1961 and 1973. The Type 3 was the fore-forerunner of the Volkswagen Passat and paved the way for the successful station wagon, the Volkswagen Estate.
