The main landscapes and phytophysiognomies, according to flood origin, are briefly described and some of the characteristic plant species are mentioned: (a) river flood (1–5 m) on clayey eutrophic soils with gallery forests, pioneer forests and scrub, Tabebuia and Copernicia parks, seasonal swamps, grasslands and oxbow lakes; and (b) rain flood (10–80 cm) mainly on dystrophic sandy soils (72% of the total area) with savanna (‘‘cerrado’’) grasslands and woodlands, with or without ponds. Regulating factors of the vegetation such as wet-and-dry cycle and management are considered. Dynamics of the vegetation, in particular the aquatic types, are shortly depicted. The role of grazing for conservation is discussed, and we suggest that 200 years of cattle ranching apparently did not cause major changes in the vegetation, except turning tall grass into short swards, as the domestic herd found a nearly empty niche. However, severe threats to the flora and fauna of the Pantanal originate outside the floodplain. The Colono Road is 17.6 km long road crossing the Iguacu National Park that has been the motive of dispute between environmentalists, government bodies and NGOs defending the closure of the Colono Road; and organised civil institutions representing the population of the surrounding cities defending its opening. In October 2003, 300 people invaded the Park in an attempt to remove the vegetation and reopen the road, which was prevented by members of the Brazilian Army and Federal Police. Those who advocate the reopening of the Colono Road claim significant economic losses imposed on the surrounding cities. This paper investigates this claim and concludes that a possible reopening of the Colono Road cannot be justified from an economic perspective. Until recently, deforestation of the adjoining Brazilian central plateau was considered the major threat to this area, but now deforestation is a critical problem within the floodplain itself. More than 40% of the forest and savanna habitats have been altered for cattle ranching through the introduction of exotic grasses. And there are other threats that lead to large-scale disruption of ecological processes, severely affecting biodi- versity.

Eight of the twelve Brazilian hydrographic regions receive water from this Biome. It contributes to more than 90% of the discharge of the São Francisco River, 50% of the Paraná River, and 70% of the Tocantins River. Therefore, the Cerrado is a strategic region for the national hydropower sector, being responsible for more than 50% of the Brazilian hydroelectricity production. Furthermore, it has an outstanding relevance in the national agricultural scenery. Despite of the relatively abundance of water in most of the region, water conflicts are beginning to arise in some areas. Zagare2 Parana River The Parana River is considered the third largest river in the American Continent, after the Mississippi in the United States and the Amazonas in Brazil. It is located in South America and it runs through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, where it flows into the Río de la Plata. Its length is 2570 Km and its basin surface is around 1.51 million km2. The two initial tributaries of the Parana are the Paranaiba River and the Grande River, both in Brazil, but the most important tributary is the Paraguay River, located in homonymous country. In comparison with other rivers, the Paraná is about half the length of the Mississippi River (6211 km), but it has similar flow. Parana River’s mean streamflow is 18500 m3/s (Menendez, 2002) and Mississippi’s flow is 17704 m3/s. Thus, the Parana has twice the length of the Rhine (1320 km), but it has 8 times its flow (2300 m3/s). Figure 1: Parana River location. Source: Zagare, V. During scientific expeditions carried out in 2016 to identify and collect germplasm in different states of Brazil, the Terra Ronca State Park (PETeR) stood out as a potential conservation area for this species. There, cratília is well adapted to the dry season, retaining green leaves even during extended dry periods and was found to develop a shrub or climbing habit, depending on light conditions.
