Thomas Cromwell – The man who did the most to ensure that the English had access to the Bible in their own language was Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chancellor from 1533 to 1540. Cromwell (portrayed by Hans Holbein above) was the spirit behind an injunction requiring that a copy of the English Bible be placed in every parish church. Published in September 1538, the injunction ordered the clergy to provide “one book of the whole Bible of the largest volume in English” and place it where “your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it.” The “largest volume” referred to the Great Bible, then being printed in Paris at Cromwell’s expense. -

Though it took to the end of the seven- teenth century for the modem law of nations, based on the idea of state sover- eignty, to be formed, the roots of many of its concepts and institutions can be situated in this period2 . STOLJEĆA I NJEGOV IZVORNI IZVJEŠTAJ O VEZALOVOJ SMRTI 1564. GODINE Maurits Biesbrouck1, Theodoor Goddeeris2 and Omer Steeno3 Summary Reiner Solenander (1524-1601) was a physician born in the Duchy of Cleves, who got his education at the University of Leuven and at various universities in Italy and in France. Back at home he became the court physician of William V and later of his son John William. In this article his life and works are discussed. A report on the death of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), noted down by Solenander in May 1566, one year and seven months after the death of Vesalius, is discussed in detail. Due to the importance of that document a copy of its first publication is given, together with a transcription and a translation as well. It indicates that Vesalius did not die in a shipwreck. San Antonio The eight poems in Latin and English written at the time of the English victory at Flodden Field in 1513 are various combinations of praise, vitu peration, satire, and polemic, reB.ecting the attitudes of their authors, John Skelton, Thomas More, Peter Cannelianus, and Bernard Andre.' Th so courtly makers, homogeneous in both their humanist background and court employment, see the battle essentially the same way-as an occasion to celebrate their royal employer and to abus his enemy-thus the differ ing verse forms and slanted treatments are grounded in a common point of view. However, John Skelton, as author of three of the eight poems, adds another dimension to his office. ln one of the poems he seems to be speaking the king's man to the king's court; however, in another poem, hls office is more generalized: h is a popular poet addressing the people of England as their teacher, but also, peculiarly, expressing their own views in his single voice. -

Adding Dimension to an Elusive Character The figure of Anne Boleyn is one that looms large in history, controversial in her time and today. The second wife of King Henry VIII, she is most well-known for precipitating his break with the Catholic Church in order to marry her. Despite the tremendous efforts King Henry went to in order to marry Anne, a mere three years into their marriage, he sentenced her to death and immediately married another woman. Popular representations of her continue to exist, though most Anne Boleyns in modern depictions are figments of a cultural imagination.1 What is most telling about the way Anne is seen is not that there are so many opinions, but that throughout over 400 years of study, she remains an elusive character to pin down.
