Palmetto Tree with one of South Carolina Mottos, "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translate to "Prepared in Mind and Resources" Motto adopted in 1776. Clothing Object No: 398 Where Found: Material: Date: Circa 1879 Description: White silk, embroidered, fringed shawl. Belonged to Carrie Lee Lawton, wife of Duncan Sams. The shawl was preserved by their youngest child, Emmie Caroline Sams Pippin until her death in 1991 at the age of 97. Given to DHF by Emmie Pippin's children Ralph Pippin and Pauline Sams Pippin Sanders in December 1998. Clothing Object No: 399 Where Found: Material: Silk Date: Circa 1859 Description: Greenplaid silk taffeta dress. Size 4. Made in the home of Miles Bruton Sams circa 1859. Belonged to Carrie Lee Lawton, wife of Duncan Sams. The dress was preserved by their youngest child, Emmie Caroline Sams Pippin until her death in 1991 at the age of 97.
