About the Composer Ai Giochi Addio ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Nino Rota (December 3, 1911, Milan– April 10, 1979, Rome) was an Italian composer and academician who is best known for his film scores, notably for the films of Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. He also composed the music for two of Franco Zeffirelli’s Shakespeare films, and for the first two films of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy, receiving for the latter the Oscars ® for Best Original Score in 1974. ABOUT THE SCORE: Nino Rota composed the love theme song for the 1968 British – Italian cinematic adoption of the William Shakespeare’ play “Romeo and Juliet”. This movie was directed and co-written by Franco Zeffirelli and won the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design and it was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. Two releases of the score of the film, composed by Rota, have been released. There are two different sets of English lyrics to the song. • The film's version is called “What Is a Youth?”, featuring lyrics by Eugene Walter and sung by Glen Weston. This version has been released on the complete- score soundtrack release; • An alternate version, called “A Time for Us”, featuring lyrics by Larry Kusik and Eddie Snyder. This version has been recorded by Johnny Mathis and Andy Williams among others. Josh Groban, the American Tenor, performed "Un Giorno Per Noi", an Italian version of "A Time for Us". A third version is called "Ai Giochi Addio", featuring lyrics by Elsa Morante, and has been performed by Opera singers such as Luciano Pavarotti and Natasha Marsh. In 2010 Leonardo (Bahram) Tajabadi, Baritone singer, performed a mix Italian-English version of “A Time for Us- Ai Giochi Addio”, which was also broadcast in a talent show on IDF1-French TV. Young, talented, and extremely handsome, he soon became an icon all over the Middle East. In 1978, Sattar migrated to the United States and continued his singing career in Los Angeles, California. In 1980, he got married and eventually became a father. His career blossomed further through the years, leading him on tours all over the world. Sattar, is an Award winner in Persian Music, who receive two Golden Lioness Awards in October 2005 from The World Academy of Arts, Literature, and Media - WAALM in Budapest. The Next Persian Star Show broadcasts from Germany by TV Persia to over 70 million viewers in Middle East, North America and Europe. MEMOIR ON THIS COLLABORATION: Leonardo : “It was in mid 2010 when ‘Totalisimo’ my Spanish agency formally introduced me to the WAALM Academy and I received a complimentary email from them in response. In the same year following a TV interview in which parts of my work were broadcast, I got contacted by Dr. Dorbayani, the president of WAALM, suggesting me to have this collaboration and to extend the classic and opera music to the Persian audience. Since I was a fan of Maestro Sattar and not only admired his art but also respected his views and attitude, I agreed right there and then. I recommended “A Time for US”, which was recorded by me earlier and WAALM facilitated to have Maestro Sattar to record the English – tenor parts of this song. And here we go, a classic duet dedicated to all with passion for music. ” Sattar: “I like this piece of music which is composed by Nino Rota and I found Leonardo’s version with his warm baritone voice interesting. When WAALM asked me if I would be interested to feature and do the English parts of this song, I thought why not and I gladly agreed. To me this piece of music is significant not just because it is associated with Shakespeare’s tragedy of Romeo and Juliet but due to its rich and complex characteristics that can be felt throughout the score. Similar to its movie, in this music one can sense ‘love’, ‘fate & chance’, and ‘duality of light & dark’. And not to say that it is still contemporary”. JOINT STATEMENT: “Hereby, Leonardo, Sattar and WAALM dedicate this song to “Peace & Love” May our world shine!” DISCLAMATION: The duet version of “A Time for Us” recorded by Leonardo (Bahram) Tajabadi featuring Sattar is a project belonged to Bahram Tajabadi. Since this production is not for commercial release, the facilitation of Mosi Dorbayani / WAALM and contribution of Maestro Sattar to this project and their collaboration with the Maestro Tajabad, the producer, were fully on honorary basis and without any financial gain or expectations. • NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Fortunately, I feel that the experience in Iowa compared very favorably with what many of us had grown accustomed Frontispiece from William Coxe, Anecdotes fo George Frederick Handel and John Christopher Smith to in Maryland.

In Paradisum: Lux aeterna 59 Foreword The writing of a Requiem is a special challenge for any composer. The great Requiems of the past by composers such as Mozart, Verdi and Berlioz interpret the sacred Requiem text literally, offering prayers of salvation for the departed, whose souls are assumed to be in purgatory facing a terrible judgement. Eternal Light: A Requiem is, by contrast, intended to provide solace to the grieving, reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them with poems in English. For me, a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones, a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife. This, like Brahms’, is a Requiem for the living, addressing their suffering and endurance, a Requiem focussing on the consequences of interrupted lives. Howard Goodall, June 2008 Eternal Light: A Requiem was commissioned by London Musici (Artistic Director: Mark Stephenson) to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It was commissioned as both a choral-orchestral-dance piece for London Musici, The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Rambert Dance Company (Artistic Director: Mark Baldwin) and as a choral-orchestral work.

Glazunov and Tchaikovsky wrote works entitled The Seasons whilst Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has become one of his best known works. These works all convey the different moods experienced throughout the year. Glazunov produced an allegorical ballet with characters such as Frost; Tchaikovsky wrote 12 piano pieces, one for each month of the year (later arranged for orchestra); and Vivaldi came up with four concerti grossi. Although a narrative aspect is present in all these compositions, Haydn goes much further, as he uses both words and music in his charming and graphic portrayal of the four seasons.
