Verdi's Rigoletto
Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered.

Precious Nonsense NEWSLETTER OF THE MIDWESTERN GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY November 1995 -- Issue 46 As is invariably the case, it's been one thing after another lately. Thanks to Michaem Miano and Carol Lee Cole, we have something ready-made to put in the Nonsense. Once things cool slow down at work, S/A Cole will have time to go through the piles of material, and put out a full-blown issue. Michael Miano and Carol Lee Cole both submitted their pieces in computer-readable form, and they appear here as they were submitted (I may spell-check them, but that'll be about it). While the Nonsense doesn't necessarily stand for an unrestricted press, its editorial staff certainly believes in letting people express their opinions. And if readers want to debate points, that's great. S/A Cole will be happy to forward messages. Anyway, it ought to make for interesting reading. Sarah Cole thanks all the membership of the Midwestern Gilbert and Sullivan Society for their patience over the last two years; and especially thanks the other G&S societies, who have been tremendously indulgent with the MGS's difficulties. Precious Nonsense NEWSLETTER OF THE MIDWESTERN GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY April 1997 -- Issue 52 Tentative Pinafore Outing Member Hugh Locker has offered to organize a Midwestern Gilbert and Sullivan Society Outing to one of the matinee performances of Light Opera Works' June 8, 1997, performance of H.M.S. Pinafore, depending on if enough people want to go. If you are interested in going, call him right away: (815) 385-3676 The final price for the outing has yet to be determined, but figure on the show tickets costing between $40.00 and $50.00, plus dinner afterwards. As these affairs generally work, participants make their own arrangements to get to Cahn Auditorium. Hopefully, enough people would be interested to get a group rate on the tickets. We need at least 20 people to get a group rate (tell your friends!). Afterwards, everybody goes to some local restaurant for dinner. Everybody pays their own checks, which saves a lot of calculations and bad feelings later. These arrangements have worked out pretty well in the past, though. This outing may come off, or it may not: Please call Hugh Locker at (815) 385-3676 by May 10, 1997 so plans can be made or cancelled. DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>4 GREAT BRITAIN: digital, 1979-2008 In the early 1970s the advent of Anthony Rooley, the Consort of Musicke, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music brought a fresh look at repertoire from Dowland to Purcell, Handel, Mozart and eventually Beethoven. Solti recorded with the LPO from 1972 and the National Philharmonic was booked regularly from 1974-84. Also during the 1970s the London Sinfonietta’s surveys of Schönberg and Janá ček were recorded. Ashkenazy’s second career as a conductor centred initially on London, with the Philharmonia from 1977 and the RPO from 1987. Philip Pickett’s New London Consort joined the Florilegium roster in 1985 and Argo’s new look brought in a variety of ensembles in the 1990s. But after an LPO Vaughan Williams cycle was aborted in 1997, Decca’s own UK recordings comprised little more than piano music and recital discs. Outside London, Argo recorded regularly in Cambridge and Oxford. Decca engaged the Welsh National Opera from 1980-96 and the Bournemouth Symphony from 1990-96, but otherwise made little use of regional British orchestras. By the time they raised their performing standards to an acceptable level, Chandos, Hyperion and Naxos had largely replaced the old majors in the market for orchestral sessions. >RV0 VENUES One hundred and seventy different venues were used, eighty-eight in the London area and eighty-two elsewhere in Britain, but only one in ten (those in bold ) hosted thirty or more entries, whilst seventy were only visited once. The Gondoliers
THE GONDOLIERS Brent Walker, 1982. (Copy under review released by Universal (UK) in 2004; other versions also available.) COMMENT First, the Brent Walker videos story: Stepney-born George Walker was a keen amateur boxer, good enough to become ABA light heavyweight champion by the age of 22. But after turning pro ("The Stepney Steamroller") and winning ten of sixteen bouts, an eye injury forced his premature retirement and he drifted into crime. On his release from Wormwood Scrubs after serving two and a half years for theft, Walker first developed his father-in-law's motor trade interests then moved into boxing management, guiding his younger brother Billy through the heavyweight ranks to challenge for (though not win) the British and European titles. The Walkers invested wisely (a night club, a dog track, catering outlets, property) and in 1974 George formed development company Brent Walker. The development then lucrative sale of north London's Brent Cross shopping centre established the company’s position, after which George sought further and more diverse investment opportunities – these would come to include Brighton Marina ("an English Venice"), two breweries and more than a thousand pubs, golf and hotel complexes across Europe, the William Hill and Mecca bookmaking chains, the Trocadero and Lyceum venues in Piccadilly Circus, a casino in Le Touquet and 1, 2, 3, 4 film production. Concerning the last-named, here, after his March 2011 death at the age of 81, is what his Daily Telegraph obituary had to say: One of Walker’s most colourful sidelines was his interest in cinema.
