5/26/2020 Class 8 A,B&C Biology (Ms.Mona Lama) Date: 26/05/20 [09:01:30 IST] From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Class 8 A,B&C Biology (Ms.Mona Lama) Class 8 A,B&C Biology Assignment-12 Date-26/5/2020 Chapter-2 Reproduction in Plant and Animals. *** Read the instructions properly and follow it accordingly. Read the page number 31 to 36, take the help of the explanation given in the WhatsApp group and do the assignment. A. Do the following given below in your Biology copy. 1. Define the term reproduction.2. Define the term sexual reproduction.3. State three advantages of vegetative propagation in plants.4. State three disadvantages of vegetative propagation in plants.5. Picture study 5 a,b,c and d. (Please do copy the diagram in your copy). B. Copy the following questions given below in your Biology copy. 1. State the function of the following.a. Spore- It helps in vegetative propagation of fungus, ferns and moss. b. Tuber- It is the swollen apical part of an underground stem of potato that contains nodes or eyes through which buds develop that grow into a new plant. 2. Give reasons for the following.a. In asexual reproduction, gametes are not involved.Ans. In asexual reproduction the offsprings are produced by division or differentiation of a single parent body thus gametes are not involved. b. Corms, rhizomes, tubers and bulb are swollen structures. Ans. Corms, rhizomes, tubers and bulb are swollen structures that are used to store food and also help in vegetative propagation. 3. Explain the terms.a. Fragmentation- This is an asexual reproductive method in which the body of the parent breaks into two or more fragments and each fragment develops into a new organism. Eg- Spirogyra. b. Spore formation- This is an asexual reproductive method in which ferns and moss forms globular structure called sporangium within which spores develop. When the sporangium burst open it releases spores that germinates into new organisms under favourable conditions. 4. Differentiate the following pairs based on the terms mentioned in brackets.a. Spore and sporangium (function)Ans. Spore - It germinates into a new organism under favourable conditions.Sporangium- It is a globular structure inside which spores develop. 5. Define Artificial propagation.Ans. It is man made methods of growing many plants through the vegetative parts of the plant. Cutting, layering , grafting and tissue culture are the methods of artificial vegetative propagation in plants. 6. Why is reproduction important for living organisms?Ans. Reproduction is important for the living organisms to ensure continuity of all species generation after generation on Earth. 7. Describe the different types of underground stems, giving an example of each .Ans. The different types of underground stems are -1. Corms- They are rounded ,fleshy structures that grow in vertical direction and are found as clusters around the swollen base of the stem. They store food as well as help in vegetative propagation of Gladiolus.2. Rhizome-They are swollen stem bearing nodes, internodes, buds ,scaly leaves and roots. From the nodes buds develop that grow into new plant and help in vegetative propagation of Ginger.3. Bulb-They are spherical underground stem with fleshy leaves attached to it.These leaves stores food . The bulb has axillary bud that produce new plants and help in vegetative propagation in Onion.4. Tuber-It is a swollen apical part of an underground stem with nodes or eyes. Buds develop from the eyes which grow into new plant in Potato. ***Complete the assignment on time as more are on it's way.
