Brown Department of Geology & Geophysics, University of Utah 115 South 1460 East, Room 205, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT The Koobi Fora region east of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya ranges in elevation from ca. 360 to 560 m, has a mean annual temperature of ca. 32ºC, and rainfall of ca. 130 mm per year. The area, much of which lies within Sibiloi National Park, supports a diverse flora. Here we provide a list of 367 plant species (361 angiosperms) collected from an area of about 2600 km2 between 2012 and 2014, compare the region’s angiosperm flora with the only other documented floras nearby, discuss the principal vegetation types in the study area, and highlight occurrences of some less common plants and plants of restricted distribution. Some 137 plant species (131 angiosperms) are newly documented in this region, none of which have been recorded in the Marsabit region to the east-southeast or in the lower Omo Valley to the northwest. Comparison of the flora of this region with reported floras of the Omo Valley and the Marsabit region show that only 98 species are common to all three areas, and that each area has unique taxa that make up about one-third of its angiosperm flora.

This study covered two parts-the first part assesses the impact of climate change on biophysical parameters such as temperature and precipitation in South Omo zone and the second part portrays an over view of adaptation mechanisms to climate change the region. A Statistical downscaling model was developed and validated using large-scale predictor variables derived from the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data and observed station data that was achieved in order to establish a statistical relationship between large-scale NCEP reanalysis predictor variables and locally observed meteorological variables. The relationship obtained was then used to generate the possible future scenarios of meteorological variables such as temperature and precipitation using large-scale predictor variables obtained from the GCM, HadCM3 outputs for A2 and B2 emission scenario. The downscaling was done for intermediate (2021-2050) and far future (2070-2099) periods. The validation results of the SDSM revealed a good agreement between simulated and observed values for temperate.

    Daasanach Development Organization ABOUT DDO Daasanach Development Organization (DDO) was established in 2010 by Jackson Achinya, Peter Akol, Naphtali Mattah, Onesmus Kamwara and James Korie Haile. Its main objective is to reduce the effects caused by poverty, remote locations and isolation of the community from mainstream society. The purpose of the organization is to seek permanent solutions to problems caused by persistent droughts and famine on the local populace. It also seeks to eradicate illiteracy, poverty, increase access to clean water, provide access to basic services and opportunities and livelihood diversification. History and Economic issues of the Daasanach People There is no certainty as to the population of the ‘Daasanach but a rough estimation according to the census conducted on the Kenyan side in the year 2009, the number was 10,000. They are made up of eight distinct ancestral/tribal sections, each with its own name, though collectively they call themselves “Daasanach,” and they all speak the same language and for the most part share the same cultural practices. There is an estimation of between 60-80,000 who frequent between the Kenya/Ethiopia boarder. Sorghum is their staple crop, but they also plant tobacco, green grams, and field peas. Away from the delta the terrain is mostly arid scrubland, and the warrior-age men (often with their wives and children) stay on the move searching for good grazing for their livestock. Over the past 75 years they have lost the majority of their grazing land in Kenya, including on both sides of Lake Turkana, and the ‘Ilemi Triangle’ of Sudan, which has resulted in a massive decrease in the numbers of cattle, goats and sheep.

Much of this existing research focuses on international diplomacy, but far less on people in East Africa. Regional actors, be it colonial officers, soldiers, or civilians, had a major impact on the conduct of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War. The main conflict that led to the outbreak of war, the December 1934 Welwel Incident, was not a conspiracy, but rather a culmination of several decades of tensions that escalated into an international affair.
