Clough Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2010 Abstract With funding from the United States National Science Foundation, 30 histor- ical short stories designed to teach science content and draw students’ attention to the nature of science (NOS) have been created for post-secondary introductory astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, and physics courses. The project rationale, story development and structure, and freely available stories at the project website are presented. 1 Introduction The phrase ‘‘nature of science’’ (NOS) has been used for some time, particularly in the science education community, in referring to what science is, how science works, the epistemological and ontological foundations underlying science, the culture of science, and how society both influences and reacts to scientific activities (Clough 2006). Accurately understanding the NOS is crucial for science literacy (AAAS 1989; Matthews 1994; McComas and Olson 1998; NRC 1996) and can perhaps play an important role in enticing students to further their science education. Matthews (1994), McComas et al. (1998) and others have argued that knowledge of scientists and how science works will enhance students’ understanding of science as a human endeavor; increase interest in science and science classes; improve student learning of science content; and promote better social decision-making. Morris Shamos (1995) claimed that understanding the NOS is the most important component of scientific literacy because that knowledge, accurate or not, is what citizens use when assessing public issues involving science and technology. -

Kingston, RI. 77 pp. Executive Summary Inclusive science communication (ISC) is a new and broad term that encompasses all efforts to engage specific audiences in conversations or activities about science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) topics, including, but not limited to, public engagement, informal science learning, journalism, and formal science education. Unlike other approaches toward science communication, however, ISC research and practice is grounded in inclusion, equity, and intersectionality, making these concerns central to the goals, design, implementation, evaluation, and refinement of science communication efforts. Together, the diverse suite of insights and practices that inform ISC comprise an emerging movement. While there is a growing recognition of the value and urgency of inclusive approaches, there is little documented knowledge about the potential catalysts and barriers for this work. PB 1 How science works The Scientific Method is traditionally presented in the first chapter of science text- books as a simple recipe for performing scientific investigations. Though many use- ful points are embodied in this method, it can easily be misinterpreted as linear and “cookbook”: pull a problem off the shelf, throw in an observation, mix in a few ques- tions, sprinkle on a hypothesis, put the whole mixture into a 350° experiment—and voila, 50 minutes later you’ll be pulling a conclusion out of the oven! That might work if science were like Hamburger Helper®, but science is complex and cannot be re- duced to a single, prepackaged recipe. The linear, stepwise representation of the process of science is simplified, but it does get at least one thing right. It captures the core logic of science: testing ideas with evidence. However, this version of the scientific method is so simplified and rigid that it fails to accurately portray how real science works. It more accurately describes how science is summarized after the fact—in textbooks and journal articles—than how sci- ence is actually done. The simplified, linear scientific method implies that scientific studies follow an unvarying, linear recipe. But in reality, in their work, scientists engage in many different activities in many different sequences. Scientific investigations often involve repeating the same steps many times to account for new information and ideas. But in reality, science depends on interactions within the scientific community. -

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of performing acts of kindness on the well-being of the actor Oliver Scott Curry ([email protected]) Lee Rowland Sally Zlotowitz John McAlaney Harvey Whitehouse September 2016 Abstract Does being kind make you happy? Recent advances in the behavioural sciences have provided a number of explanations of human social, cooperative and altruistic behaviour. These theories predict that people will be ‘happy to help’ family, friends, community members, spouses, and even strangers under some conditions. As a preliminary test of whether and to what extent these predictions are supported by the existing literature, here we conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the experimental evidence that kindness interventions (for example, performing ’random acts of kindness’) boost subjective well-being. Our initial search of the literature identifies 376 articles; of which 19 (21 studies) meet the inclusion criteria (total N=2,685). We find that the overall effect of kindness on well-being is small-to-medium (d = 0.38). There is also some indication of publication bias – lower quality studies tended to find larger effects – suggesting that the true effect size may be smaller still (0.31 ≤ d ≤ 0.34). We also find that the design and methodological limitations of existing studies preclude the testing of specific theories of kindness. We recommend that future research: distinguish between the effects of kindness to specific categories of people (for example, family, friends, strangers); take kindness- specific individual differences into account; and consider a wider range of distal outcome measures. -

SCIENCETreise, Weigold COMMUNICATION / SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS Scholars of science communication have identified many issues that may help to explain why sci- ence communication is not as “effective” as it could be. This article presents results from an exploratory study that consisted of an open-ended survey of science writers, editors, and science communication researchers. Results suggest that practitioners share many issues of concern to scholars. Implications are that a clear agenda for science communication research now exists and that empirical research is needed to improve the practice of communicating science. WEIGOLD University of Florida The writings of science communication scholars suggest twodominant themes about science communication: it is important and it is not done well (Hartz and Chappell 1997; Nelkin 1995; Ziman 1992). This article explores the opinions of science communication practitioners with respect to the sec- ond of these themes, specifically, why science communication is often done poorly and how it can be improved. The opinions of these practitioners are important because science communicators serve as a crucial link between the activities of scientists and the public that supports such activities. To intro- duce our study, we first review opinions as to why science communication is important. We then examine the literature dealing with how well science communication is practiced. Press, 2000) Reviewed by Brian Malley (Department of Anthropology, University of Michigan) [pages 5-7] A friend of mine, a dedicated post-everything-ist, once wistfully remarked that she had an affinity for those old-style “big theories” of religion characteristic of late nineteenth century social thought. I knew what she meant: those “big theories” strove to account both for the form and the very existence of religious belief and practice in terms of a grand scheme of human history. A century of ethnographic and historical investigation has given us a much richer understanding of both large- and small-scale religions, and, to the degree that Mueller, Durkheim, and the like produced empirically tractable theories, they have been disconfirmed.
