PREFACE My interest in bird-lore began in my own home in Scotland, and was fostered by the opportunities that came to me in my wanderings about my native land. On my arrival in South Africa in 19117, it was further quickened by the prospect of gathering much new material in a propitious field. My first fellow-workers in the fascinating study of Native bird-lore were the daughters of my predecessor at Pirie, Dr. Bryce Ross, and his grandson Mr. Join% Ross. In addition, a little arm y of school-boys gathered birds for me, supplying the Native names, as far as they knew them, for the specimens the y brought. In 1910, after lecturing at St. Matthew's on our local birds, I was made adjudicator in an essay-competition on the subject, and through these essays had my knowledge considerably extended. My further experience, at Somerville and Blythswood, and my growing correspondence, enabled me to add steadily to my material ; and in 1929 came a great opportunit y for unifying my results. -

The Narrative of the Baptist Association of South Africa and Its Significance for the Indian Baptist Church in Kwazulu-Natal
The narrative of the Baptist Association of South Africa and its significance for the Indian Baptist Church in KwaZulu-Natal Rodney Ragwan1 Palmer Theological Seminary, Wynnewood, USA Abstract This article is an attempt to reclaim the history of the Baptist Association of South Africa. It provides background information about a community of indentured labourers, discusses the socio-political context of this community, and examines the contributions of three Indian-born missionaries and women of the Baptist Association of South Africa. Finally, it discusses the limitations of South African Baptist Historiography. Background In the late 1800s, natives from India arrived in South Africa to work as indentured labourers on the tea and sugar estates in what was then the Colony of Natal. Among this group of labourers were about 150 Telugu-speaking Baptists. They settled in the Natal North Coast, where they worked on Sir Leigh Hulett’s Tea Estate in Kearsney, near Stanger. In 1903 the Telugu-speaking Baptists invited John Rangiah from India to serve as their missionary. The Telugu Home Missionary Society in India sent John Rangiah, his wife and two children, to Natal to work among the Baptist indentured labourers (NIBA 1953:12). Reverend John Rangiah John spent much of his boyhood (in India) among American Baptist missionaries. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, lay preacher, evangelist, treasurer and deacon. Rangiah also served as headmaster of the Nellore Boy’s School from 1897-1900 and of the Nellore Girl’s School from 1901-1903. On 20 April 1903, he was ordained as a minister of the Lone Star Baptist Church (NIBA News 1953:10). -

Smith During the three decades between the end of World War I and 1950, African and West Indian scholars, professionals, university students, artists, and political activists in London forged new conceptions of community, reshaped public debates about the nature and goals of British colonialism, and prepared the way for a revolutionary and self-consciously modern African culture. Black intellectuals formed organizations that became homes away from home and centers of cultural mixture and intellectual debate, and launched publications that served as new means of voicing social commentary and political dissent. These black associations developed within an atmosphere characterized by a variety of internationalisms, including pan-ethnic movements, feminism, communism, and the socialist internationalism ascendant within the British Left after World War I. The intellectual and political context of London and the types of sociability that these groups fostered gave rise to a range of black internationalist activity and new regional imaginaries in the form of a West Indian Federation and a United West Africa that shaped the goals of anticolonialism before 1950. -

No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any form, or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording or otherwise, without the prior permission of the Levtzion Center and the author The Fifth Annual Levtzion Lecture was delivered at the Hebrew University, 30 April 2009 Abstract This paper provides a succinct overview of the relationships between Ethiopia – a land in which Christianity first encountered Islam, and where Judaism was already present – and the Middle East, the cradle of these religions. The paper focuses on the dialectic between historic political and strategic needs, interests and concrete options on one hand, and the reservoir of abstract notions bequeathed by these ancient religions, on the other. The main thesis is that Islam, Christianity and Judaism, far from providing monolithic messages, harbored a wide range of prescriptions for moderates and fanatics alike. Analyzing the multi- facetted legacies by which Ethiopians and their Middle Eastern neighbors conceptualized each other, the paper discusses several modern political developments and demonstrates how they were inspired by these religious interpretations and proclivities. -

The theme of the 2019 meeting was “Diversity and Difference in Custom, Belief, and Practice in the History of Missions and World Christianity.” Joel Carpenter is a professor of history and provost, emeritus, of Calvin University. Until recently he was the director of Calvin's Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity. Dr. Carpenter has published extensively in the field of American religious history, most notably Revive Us Again: The Reawakening of American Fundamentalism (Oxford, 1997). More recently he has been studying Christian movements in the global South and East. He has edited or co-edited five books in this field, most recently Christianity in India: Conversion, Community Development, and Religious Freedom (Fortress Press, 2018). Andrew Walls is Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh, Professor of the History of Mission at Liverpool Hope University, and Emeritus Professor at the Akrofi-Christaller Institute for Theology, Mission and Culture. FOREWORD I am most grateful for the opportunity to provide a message in this book which contains much good news. The Eastern Cape National Senior Certificate (NSC) Class of 2017 has made us proud. These Grade 12 learners took advantage of the many opportunities afforded to them to achieve success. In particular, the following opportunities were provided to all learners in the province: 1. A book on Tips for Success in the NSC Examinations 2. Textbooks and study guides 3. Past examination papers 4. Extra lessons on radio and telematics 5. Extra lessons after school and during weekends and holidays. I want to thank most sincerely our hard-working teachers and principals who provided support to the Grade 12 learners throughout the year. Their dedication and commitment is highly valued. I also want to thank parents and communities for all they have done to support the learners in many different ways. As a result of these efforts, the pass rate of the Eastern Cape has improved for the second year in a row, In 2016 the pass rate improved from 56,8% in 2015 by 2,5% to 59,3% and in 2017 the pass rate rose by a creditable 5,7% to 65%. This steady improvement provides the foundation on which to build our programmes to reach 70% in the near future. Not only did the pass rate improve but the pass rate for Bachelors study increased from 17,6% in 2015 to 18,9% in 2016 and to 22,7% in 2017. This 5% increase over two years indicates that the quality of teaching and learning is also improving in the Eastern Cape. -
