A Jesuit priest read me my last rites. My life was expected to last only a matter of hours. My heart was failing me, but my family did not. My family maintained hope. I fought, even though the memory of that struggle escapes me. Years later, I came upon Audre lorde’s words in Sister Outsider imploring those who “were never meant to survive” to persevere, never give up, and excel despite the circumstances. This adage continues to resonate with me. Unlike the specter of death, composing a book is a creation of the new. The early foundations of the book began at the University of Chicago. Patchen Markell, Danielle Allen, Julie Saville, and Iris Young taught me there how to mean what I say, and they served as excellent models of professional- ism. Patchen’s exhaustive philosophical knowledge and clever humor, Dani- xii / Acknowledgments elle’s gift for decoding politics in literature, Julie’s historicism on slavery, and iris’s knack for making the abstract relevant to our contemporary world were an unforgettable constellation of attributes for the study of political theory that I consistently learned from. Iris would become an ancestor far too early, but her spirit and thought live on. The Caribbean Studies Work- shop, the Workshop on the Reproduction of Race and Racial Ideologies, and dialogues with Jacob Levy on Francophone thought offered a complemen- tary and lively intellectual community. Sylvia Wynter’s suggestion to consult a little-known work by Aimé Césaire turned out to be beneficial beyond its intended scope. My subsequent time as a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University helped me to develop my evolving rationalizations of the project in that not uncommon moment of post- PhD fatigue. Intense discussions with Michael Hanchard and Floyd Hayes then and now still have resonance, as do the ongoing exchanges with Jane Gordon, Lewis Gordon, and Paget Henry. At the institutional level, it has been wonderful to complete the book at my current workplace, Williams College. Conquest displaced the Spanish colony and its subjects, some of who fled into the mountainous interior of Jamaica and assumed lives in isolation. This project reconstructs the historical experiences of the “negro” populations of Spanish and English Jamaica, which included its “free black”, “mulattoes”, indigenous peoples, and others, and examines how English cosmopolitanism and distinct interactions laid the groundwork for and informed the syncretic identities and communities that emerged decades later. Upon the framework of English conquest within the West Indies, I explore the experiences of one such settlement alongside the early English colony of Jamaica to understand how a formal relationship materialized between the entities and how its course inflected the distinct socio-political identity and emergent political agency embodied by the Jamaican Maroons.

Smith During the three decades between the end of World War I and 1950, African and West Indian scholars, professionals, university students, artists, and political activists in London forged new conceptions of community, reshaped public debates about the nature and goals of British colonialism, and prepared the way for a revolutionary and self-consciously modern African culture. Black intellectuals formed organizations that became homes away from home and centers of cultural mixture and intellectual debate, and launched publications that served as new means of voicing social commentary and political dissent. These black associations developed within an atmosphere characterized by a variety of internationalisms, including pan-ethnic movements, feminism, communism, and the socialist internationalism ascendant within the British Left after World War I. The intellectual and political context of London and the types of sociability that these groups fostered gave rise to a range of black internationalist activity and new regional imaginaries in the form of a West Indian Federation and a United West Africa that shaped the goals of anticolonialism before 1950.

Joan A Millard SUMMARY During the period 1884-1925 Ethiopian-type schisms from mission churches occurred for a number of reasons. Generalisations of these reasons have been made by numerous authors. By generalising the causes of schism the particular reasons why each independent church 1eader 1eft the mission church are ignored. The thesis shows how each schism was due to unique circumstances in the mission church as well as to factors, for example, the personal feelings of the independent church leader. In each case there was a point of no return when the founder of the independent church no longer felt he could accept the status quo. There were two government commissions that investigated the independent or "separatist" churches during these years - the South African Native Affairs Commission of 1903-1905 and the 1925 South African Native Affairs Commission which investigated the "Separatist Churches". The testimony of the white government officials and missionaries and the black church leaders has been compared with the findings in the reports.
