The Narrative of the Baptist Association of South Africa and Its Significance for the Indian Baptist Church in Kwazulu-Natal
The narrative of the Baptist Association of South Africa and its significance for the Indian Baptist Church in KwaZulu-Natal Rodney Ragwan1 Palmer Theological Seminary, Wynnewood, USA Abstract This article is an attempt to reclaim the history of the Baptist Association of South Africa. It provides background information about a community of indentured labourers, discusses the socio-political context of this community, and examines the contributions of three Indian-born missionaries and women of the Baptist Association of South Africa. Finally, it discusses the limitations of South African Baptist Historiography. Background In the late 1800s, natives from India arrived in South Africa to work as indentured labourers on the tea and sugar estates in what was then the Colony of Natal. Among this group of labourers were about 150 Telugu-speaking Baptists. They settled in the Natal North Coast, where they worked on Sir Leigh Hulett’s Tea Estate in Kearsney, near Stanger. In 1903 the Telugu-speaking Baptists invited John Rangiah from India to serve as their missionary. The Telugu Home Missionary Society in India sent John Rangiah, his wife and two children, to Natal to work among the Baptist indentured labourers (NIBA 1953:12). Reverend John Rangiah John spent much of his boyhood (in India) among American Baptist missionaries. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, lay preacher, evangelist, treasurer and deacon. Rangiah also served as headmaster of the Nellore Boy’s School from 1897-1900 and of the Nellore Girl’s School from 1901-1903. On 20 April 1903, he was ordained as a minister of the Lone Star Baptist Church (NIBA News 1953:10). -

Joan A Millard SUMMARY During the period 1884-1925 Ethiopian-type schisms from mission churches occurred for a number of reasons. Generalisations of these reasons have been made by numerous authors. By generalising the causes of schism the particular reasons why each independent church 1eader 1eft the mission church are ignored. The thesis shows how each schism was due to unique circumstances in the mission church as well as to factors, for example, the personal feelings of the independent church leader. In each case there was a point of no return when the founder of the independent church no longer felt he could accept the status quo. There were two government commissions that investigated the independent or "separatist" churches during these years - the South African Native Affairs Commission of 1903-1905 and the 1925 South African Native Affairs Commission which investigated the "Separatist Churches". The testimony of the white government officials and missionaries and the black church leaders has been compared with the findings in the reports. -

The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 by Bakary Gibba A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Bakary Gibba (2011) The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Bakary Gibba Department of History, University of Toronto Abstract This thesis investigates the efforts of the West Indian Church to establish and run a fascinating Mission in an area of West Africa already influenced by Islam or traditional religion. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths -

Olusanya); The early formative stage of Trade Unionism in Nigeria (E. O. Egboh). Conference on Oral History in Tanzania A CONFERENCE on Oral History in Tanzania was held on 8 and 9 November at the University College, Dar es Salaam. This was attended by several members of the college teaching staff and nine scholars currently engaged in field-work or writing-up, including university students from overseas, and local teachers and missionaries, for whom research is a part-time activity. Papers were also received from several scholars who have recently completed field-work in Tanzania. Of special interest were the reports on the history of the Pare (Mr. I. N. Kimambo), Shambala (Mr. S. Feierman), Kimbu (Fr. A. E. M. Shorter), and Hehe (Miss A. Redmayne). Several topics were suggested for future research: for example, the early history of Unyam- wezi and the histories of towns such as Ujiji and Tabora. Professor W. H. Whiteley stressed that oral historians and other field-workers, suitably briefed and armed with tape-recorders, could make valuable additions to knowledge of Bantu languages in Tanzania. The con- ference discussed the creation of' oral archives '; it seemed that these could serve the linguist and the college student, if not the research historian. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Science December 2015 An Abstract of the Thesis of Caellagh Morrissey for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of History and International Studies to be taken December 2015 Title: Fugitive Queens: Amakhosikazi and the Evolution of Gender and Power in KwaZulu-Natal (1816-1889) Professor Lindsay F. Braun Amakhosikazi (elite women) played a vital role within the social, economic, and political reality of the Zulu pre-colonial state. However, histories have largely categorized them as accessory to the lives of powerful men. Through close readings of oral traditions, travelogues, and government documentation, this paper discusses the spaces in which the amakhosikazi exhibited power, and tracks changes in the social position of queen mothers, as well as some members of related groups of elite women, from the early years of the Zulu chiefdom in the 1750s up until the 1887 annexation by Britain and their crucial intervention in royal matters in 1889. The amakhosika=i can be seen operating in a complex social space wherein individual women accessed power through association to political clans, biological and economic reproduction, manipulation, and spiritual influence. Women's access to male power sources changed through both internal political shifts and external pressures. but generally increased in the first half of the 1800s, and the declined over time and with the fracturing of Zulu hegemony. -

Historically, Christianity in Africa is as old as when it was established in Palestine. It was introduced into Mediterranean Africa and by the fourth century A.D Monasteries had already been established in Egypt and thousands of Churches founded in present day Maghreb. The different Missionary bodies as well believed in the spread of Western European education as the best means of ensuring the permanence of their work in Africa. The objective of the research is not only aimed at highlighting the Missionaries' roles in civilizing Africa but to also examine their impact or achievements in the continent of Africa. The work obtained information majorly from the secondary source.
