Research diary 145 REFERENCES 160 VITA 167 vi REFRESH: EXAMINING THE PRODUCTION OF CELEBRITY NEWS IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT Elizabeth Meyers Hendrickson Dr. Stephanie Craft, Dissertation Supervisor ABSTRACT This case study examines the newsgathering processes and production of an entertainment website, Futé.com, and asks how newsroom routines, organizational structure and culture of a virtual newsroom shape editorial content. Futé operates via a virtual newsroom, where communication is not conducted face-to-face, but primarily through instant messaging. This computer-mediated communication (CMC) reconfigures the standard place-based newsroom arrangements and significantly influences the group’s organizational dynamics and culture. Because of the unique content and unconventional organizational structure of the site, no single theoretical perspective offers a way of understanding its organizational context and content. Therefore, this study employed a combination of organization theory, specifically Schein (2004) and newsroom sociology frameworks. This research found that four basic assumptions drive the organizational culture of Futé: 1) Our mission is true; 2) Working from home is the best way to go; 3) IM is the most effective way for us to communicate; and 4) The new page view bonus system doesn’t really affect us. These assumptions are rarely debated or directly confronted by the group and are used at group and individual levels as defense mechanisms that allow the group to maintain functionality. This study’s examination of the relationships between editors, between editors and the organization and between the editors and the audience illustrates the group’s complex interplay between formal and vii informal associations and linear and non-linear organizational structures. The dualities allow for the group’s personality to emulate certain conventional newsroom dynamics while creating its own distinctive characteristics. In addition, this study determines a connection between technology and virtual workplace, and workplace culture and nature of an organization. The overall organization’s attempt to meld authority, adaptability, business economics and personal economics with its adoption of CMC and the virtual workplace demonstrates a generally mutually beneficial arrangement for both management and workers. The site’s operations exemplify the importance of leadership in effectively managing the fit between employee and organizational culture, which in turn allows a group to successfully adapt to its environment. As such, the most imperative skill of any member of an organization is the ability to adapt and adjust to the organization and its needs. These obligations might be outwardly expressed or implicitly stated. Regardless, it is the employee’s task to interpret this information from the organization’s leader in order to contribute to group work and ultimately, successful and healthy group maturity. This study exemplifies the potential for new media researchers to adopt a cross-disciplinary approach to their research. As old models for understanding media cease to support the complex structures of new organizations, scholars must look to additional frameworks for supplementary guidance. viii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Purpose of Study This dissertation examines the newsgathering processes and production of an entertainment website, Futé.com, and asks how newsroom routines, organizational structure and culture of a virtual newsroom shape editorial content. Futé represents a new hybrid of online media that combines original reporting with the re-posting of current news stories. The site can be considered part blog, part magazine, and part aggregate, combining the personal expression and political debate of the blog format with links to conventional media sites, such as The New York Times or CNN. Futé’s resulting content is a meta-analysis of conventionally reported stories that span the cultural collective conscious, ranging from political to fashion to celebrity. New media vehicles such as Futé are challenging our notions of news. Not only are their editors creating a postmodern media product that combines characteristics of popular media with that of alternative media, but they are also attracting both a loyal following of readers and advertisers who are increasingly abandoning the traditional print product (Grigoriadis, 10/15/2007). As celebrity weekly magazines continue to do well in the marketplace and conventional print publications continue to lose readers, sites such as Futé are tapping in to the zeitgeist by appealing to many appetites. Futé users can read about celebrity scandal as well as political scandal and refresh their screens every 10 or 15 minutes for new stories. The near-constant stream of information crosses topical boundaries with a consistent editorial tone

    1 Love Letters of Virginia Mowry and Theodore Barber, Fall 1925 Forward by Jeffrey La Favre, grandson of Virginia and Theodore [revised March 29, 2019] It is a deep regret of mine that my grandfather, Theodore Underhill Barber, did not live long enough for me to know him (4 May 1885 - 4 April 1952). He died when I was two and a half years old. His life was one of many impressive accomplishments and of adversities overcome. His childhood was spent in Brooklyn, New York, and he was educated at the Pratt Institute. His father had a stroke at a young age and Theodore had to quit school to help earn money for the family. He worked at a bank in New York as office boy for the bank president, rising to the position of head teller at a young age. In these letters we learn that that bank was New York Trust Co. Theodore married Adelaide Searing Valentine on November 15, 1907 while still living in New York. Their only child, Ruth Underhill Barber, was born October 7, 1908. Adelaide’s parents moved to Altadena, California, sometime between 1905 and 1910, leaving Florence (Adelaide’s older sister) and Adelaide in Brooklyn. Letters were written home to Brooklyn about the wonderful life in Altadena. Theodore’s position at the bank was causing him stress, which had manifested in physical ways. These events led to his decision to move to California to pursue a better life. There he found he could not obtain a bank position that would pay a living wage.

    Volunteering in Cape Town, South Africa Day One: I’ve Arrived Arrived in Cape Town and was greeted by a man named Yacoob. Took about an hour to get from the airport to the place I'm staying. It's called Saltycrax. It's a place backpackers stop off at for $40 USD a night and it also houses volunteers. You can imagine what it looks like. I met a lady named Nanda and a young man named Yanga. Yanga poured me a shot of Jager and I had a toast with about 4 strangers. Was shown my room which consists of a filthy tile floor, an old wooden armoire, and 2 cots, one with bedding, one without. The stiffness is a close resemblance to that tile floor. My room is in a shared house on the other side of the block, about a 3- minute walk from Saltycrax. There's a security guard in his car on the intersection so he can see both houses but he's only there Thursday-Sunday. I asked if it was safe to walk to the nearby convenience store and was told yes, so long as I go with somebody. Back at Saltycrax there were about 20-25 people at the common bar area, paying 20 Rand or so a beer. Or about $1 USD. I met people from Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, but not one American here. But somehow they're all giving me shit about Trump. I was made a plate of food filled with rice, chicken, and some vegetables. Also caught myself munching on dried tree leaves that made their way into the meal as well as a ton of bones, large and thin.

    Cesar 1968 By LeRoy Chatfield © 1993 - 2007 Chapter II - 1968 September 9, (1968) Today we left Cesar ill in the hospital. Last night he ate half a box of peanut butter brittle and his system was unable to digest it, leaving him constipated and with a splitting headache. To complete the comedy of errors he had a terrible case of the hiccups. As I left the room, Doctor (Jerry) Lackner had just given him pills for the hiccups and an orderly was preparing to give him an enema. Two very old nuns were stationed at the door keeping guard; their combined ages most certainly exceeded 150 years but they still seemed up to frightening off friendly visitors. Cesar was completely dazed and so filled with sleep and pills that he could only grunt "yes" or "no". We arrived home safely in Delano about 3:45 PM. There was a call from Associated Press waiting so I phoned and gave them a news release about Cesar's general condition, revealed the name of the hospital and the name of the two specialists involved. The gist of the release was that he was responding to traction and the medication and that physical therapy would begin on Tuesday. The reporter, of course, was searching for an angle but I really didn't have one for him; giving the name of the hospital and the name of the specialists should have been of some help. Paul Fusco of Look magazine called. I think he got the word from Zimmerman that we are a little upset about Look not running the article and yet they keep coming to Delano to gather more pictures.

The peculiar mixture of larger-than-life personas and the feelings of connection and intimacy they inspire are formed and spread through mass media (Rojek 2001). Thus, as media changes, so does celebrity. In the last two decades, we have seen dramatic changes in the concept of celebrity from one related solely to mass and broadcast media to one that reflects a more diverse media landscape; for instance, reality television has both revealed the mundane day-to-day lives of pop stars and sitcom actors as it simultaneously transforms ordinary people into celebrities (Kavka 2012). More recently, media technologies like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Vine, and Instagram have enabled both famous and non-famous people to generate vast quantities of personal media, manipulate and distribute this content widely, and reach out to (real or imagined) audiences. The contemporary shift from broadcast to participatory media, and the popularity of social media technologies among young people, have contributed to two major changes in celebrity culture. First, “traditional” celebrities have embraced social media to create direct, unmediated relationships with fans, or at least the illusion of such. Seeming to bypass the traditional brokers of celebrity attention like agents and managers, young stars like Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian provide snapshots of their lives and interactions with followers that give the impression of candid, unfettered access.

    NMEDIAC : Winter 2013-14 Reblogging Fashion: Participatory curation on Tumblr (pdf version) Lisa Ehlin Stockholm University Abstract This article aims to discuss the aesthetic quality, visual experience and social practice of the microblog platform Tumblr. Having passed the 100 million blogs mark, the service has been increasingly prominent online since its launch in 2007. Thus, fashion, mass media and memory institutions as well as other more individual forms of visual expression have found the platform particularity interesting as a source for communication and networking. Disputing Jodi Dean’s argument that blogging is an expression of our constantly shifting identities and provoking us to exhibitionism, this article proposes blogging and reblogging on Tumblr as a type of creative curation where digital images and content are in constant flux but always temporarily fixed through the reblog button, re-creating through different contexts and part of identity formations, rather than effects of them. Moreover, fashion is crucial in understanding Tumblr’s appeal, not just by way of the style blogs and fashion focus of the site and the ambiguities of its execution, but also in the very force, which drives the blogging in the first place, a desire or addictive yearning. The platform is arguably unique in providing active user participation through anonymity, dialogue, and alternative spaces for interaction and community with a mixture of attention, production and expression, making Tumblr a central case for the future of content curation online.
