  • Romanian Rural World Heritage Sites and Tourism Development
2019, Vol. 7, No. 1 10.15678/EBER.2019.070108 Romanian Rural World Heritage Sites and Tourism Development Cornelia Pop, Maria-Andrada Georgescu A B S T R A C T Objective: The aim of this article is to investigate if Romanian rural localities hosting or situated within a natural WHS (World Heritage Site) have benefited from their sit- uation and developed the local rural tourism. Research Design & Methods: Since the topic of this article had not been previously in- vestigated for Romania, the research was constructed as a case study, exploring the avail- able secondary data on tourism supply and demand. Within the case study, a combina- tion of empirical methods was used in order to investigate two ratios (the survival rate and continuity ratio) constructed to study the sustainability of the offer of local tourism. Findings: Romanian rural localities hosting or being part of a WHS do not exploit properly their tourist potential. However, these localities are in a better position than common rural localities from the viewpoint of a sustainable tourism offer. Implications & Recommendations: Further studies on tourism demand and tourism governance for WHS localities are needed in order to help local governments to de- velop authentic and sustainable tourism for these areas. Contribution & Value Added: Given the sparse academic Romanian literature focus- ing on WHSs, this study contributes to this field and opens new avenues for research. Furthermore, the findings of this study add to the existing international literature by supporting the idea that simply the presence of a WHS in rural areas is not a panacea for promoting tourism.

The Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (Paris, 1972) and Romania PPLURALL U R A L 17 The Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (Paris, 1972) and Romania Gherghina BODA Abstract The notion of the cultural heritage of humanity is relatively recent, but its protection and conservation date back to the Renaissance. Over time, this type of initiatives has been supported legislatively, which provided a legal framework, including the obligation to protect and rescue humanity’s exceptional natural and cultural assets. One form of legislation on the protection and conservation of heritage is the Paris Convention of November 1972 which, for the first time, brought to public attention the idea of World Heritage. Romania adopted the convention by Decree No. 187/1990. Since then, our country has managed to list eight UNESCO cultural and natural sites and with the promulgation of Law No. 410 of December 29, 2005, on the protection of intangible cultural heritage, it registered six other heritage elements, the Romanian culture thus occupying a well-deserved place among the cultures of the world. The 1972 Convention is important due to the impetus was given to the countries of the world to preserve, protect and promote their national values, but also to place them among other world property of exceptional value. Keywords: world heritage, culture, protection, convention, Paris. Introduction During its existence, since its appearance, the human being has lived his odys- sey in a perpetual struggle of matter and mind. Creativity and ingenuity have been reflected in all the objects produced, from the simplest flint tool to the na- ive drawings scratched on cave walls, from the megalithic constructions to the exceptional works of art that have stubbornly defied time and reached our time.

  • Risk Management Practical Aspects for Protection of Romanian UNESCO Sites
WSEAS International Conference on CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TOURISM (CUHT'08), Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece, July 22-24, 2008 Risk Management Practical Aspects For Protection of Romanian UNESCO Sites GAVRILETEA MARIUS DAN, DUMBRAVA PARTENIE Faculty of Business University Babes Bolyai Horea 7, Cluj Napoca ROMANIA Abstract: - An actual problem of each generation is to conserve its history, its artifacts, the culture and national identity. In this paper we will debate the influence of the external risks to the heritage sites in Romania. As a UNESCO member Romania include some of the most important national heritage sites in the UNESCO patrimony. We will present the type of these sites and will analyze the risk management process for assuring a good conservation of them. The most important risks that may affect them are the catastrophic ones. The core of the paper presents the situation of these risks in the world and the existing situation in Romania. Our study refers to the risk control process for Romanian UNESCO sites and the active measures taken in the insurance industry as a financing of the loss occurrence process. The insurance analysis is split in the covering availability and the determining of the sum insured. In conclusion we appreciate that is better to prevent the heritage sites instead of restore, because in the future all the important things that will remain are these types of values. Key-Words: - Romania, UNESCO, Risk, Control, Financing, Insurance 1 Introduction Heritage. There are 185 countries who have signed An actual problem of each generation is to conserve the World Heritage Convention until now.

However, previous studies showed contradictory results regarding the territorial impact of World Heritage Sites, and very few researchers discussed their impact in Eastern Europe. This paper examines how the presence of World Heritage Sites in rural localities influenced the tourism growth and sustainable development in Romania after 2000. Independent Sample t-test was used to analyse the evolution of tourism and sustainable development indicators between 2001 and 2016. The results suggest an absence of a positive effect induced by World Heritage Sites in rural areas. It seems that, by itself, the brand has not enough power to sustain tourist attractiveness if it is not endorsed by national, regional, and local initiatives. These findings lead a discussion about how certain sites managed to induce a sustained tourism growth while others failed to do so.

It examines how three groups living in an isolated river valley, Romanian peasants, Roma traders and Orthodox nuns, made use of two fields of social action newly opened by the collapse of socialism—democratic politics and religious devotion—in order to maximize their access to power and economic re sources. Using archival research, oral histories, interviews and extensive participant observation, the thesis traces the political life of Horezu convent, an important estate of the Orthodox Church, over its 300-year history, focusing particularly on the social ist and post-socialist periods.

A region, in order to express its viability as tourism destination, has to emphasize not only its defining elements, but also the activities from the recreative, curative or cultural field in which it has specialized in (processed after Cocean et al., 2002, pp. 297-298). This involves several stages, organically linked in a planned framework, with the establishment of the specific objectives and strategies, not only at micro and meso, but also at macro level, beginning with “the study of the motivational demand, of the resources, in terms of their functionality in tourism and their profitability in exploitation” (Erdeli, Gheorghilaş, 2006, pp. 288-289). Keywords: tourism micro-destination; destination image; regional tourism brand; medical spa
