Hadland Davis Myths & Legends of Japan CHAPTER I: THE PERIOD OF THE GODS In the Beginning We are told that in the very beginning "Heaven and Earth were not yet separated, and the In and Yo not yet divided." This reminds us of other cosmogony stories. The In and Yo, corresponding to the Chinese Yang and Yin, were the male and female principles. It was more convenient for the old Japanese writers to imagine the coming into being of creation in terms not very remote from their own manner of birth. In Polynesian mythology we find pretty much the same conception, where Rangi and Papa represented Heaven and Earth, and further parallels may be found in Egyptian and other cosmogony stories. In nearly all we find the male and female principles taking a prominent, and after all very rational, place. We are told in theNihongi that these male and female principles "formed a chaotic mass like an egg which was of obscurely defined limits and contained germs." Eventually this egg was quickened into life, and the purer and clearer part was drawn out and formed Heaven, while the heavier element settled down and became Earth, which was "compared to the floating of a fish sporting on the surface of the water." A mysterious form resembling a reed-shoot suddenly appeared between Heaven and Earth, and as suddenly became transformed into a God called Kuni-toko- tachi, ("Land-eternal-stand-of-august-thing"). We may pass over the other divine births until we come to the important deities known as Izanagi and Izanami ("Male-who-invites" and "Female-who-invites"). -

GLIMPSES OF UNFAMILIAR JAPAN First Series by LAFCADIO HEARN This book, Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan, is a Mid-Frequency Reader and has been adapted to suit readers with a vocabulary of 4,000 words. It is just under 100,000 words long. It is available in three versions of different difficulty. This version is adapted from the Project Gutenberg E-text (http://www.pgdp.net/). In this book, the adaptation involved replacing 1,196 different words. There are 377 words at the 5th 1000 level, 55 words at the 6th 1000 level and 185 words beyond that, totalling 617 target words. The words from the 6th 1000 on each occur often in the text, typically more than 10 times. The book also contains 590 different Japanese words which are explained in the text. The Kojiki’s Worldview: Entangled Worlds of Gods and Humans TANIGUCHI MASAHIRO Keywords: Plain of High Heaven, Central Land of Reed Plains, Ōkuninushi, green-grass mortals, heavenly Kagu Mountain Introduction HE Kojiki 古事記 consists of three fascicles. This tripartite structure is com- monly understood to organize the work’s content in the following manner: the first fascicle depicts the world of gods, the second, a world inhabited by Tboth gods and humans, and the third, the world of humans. However, does such a simplistic reading really enable us to grasp the inner structure of the Kojiki as a literary composition? In the preface, the author Ō no Yasumaro 太安万侶 explains the work’s structure in the following way: In general, the account starts with the beginning of heaven and earth and ends with the august reign of Owarida 小治田. Thus, everything from Ame no Minakanushi no Kami 天御中主神 through Hikonagisatake Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto 日子波限建鵜草葺不合命 is included in the first fascicle. Everything from Heavenly Sovereign Kamuyamatoiwarebiko 神倭伊波礼 毗古 through the august reign of Homuda 品陀 is included in the second fas- cicle. Everything from Emperor Ōsazaki 大雀 through the august reign at the grand palace of Owarida is included in the third fascicle. And yet it has one of the richest histo- ries, including the territory of what used to be known as Izumo, associat- ed with one of the most intriguing figures of Japanese mythology, Susanoo, as well as being the location of the entrance to the afterworld, Yomi. The modern prefectural capital, Matsue, is closely associated with one of the most renowned Western commentators on Japan, Lafcadio Hearn. Objective This short essay introduces some of the highlights that can be enjoyed during a short visit to Izumo. These include the Izumo Grand Shrine, dedi- cated to the deity Okuninushi, today second only to the Ise Grand Shrine in significance, and the neighbouring Museum of Ancient Izumo, one of the very best regional museums in Japan, which presents the rich history and traditions of the region and makes an excellent jumping off point for further exploration. -

However, this kind of episode has not been focused on as a literary trope. This kind of episode is a literary tradition which we can trace back to the earliest written works in Japan, such as the Kojiki (721). This thesis aims to find out the connections between these earliest works and Heian fiction and the development of this literary tradition in relation to the trope of "bride-stealing." Turning my attention to the facts that the abducted women are usually related to the royal family, and that the noblemen who successfully execute their abductions seem also to be successful in their political careers after this event, I hypothesize that the concept of the trope of "bride-stealing" includes not only stealing a woman but also a stealing of the imperial power (pkeri) or right to rule. -

Clark All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor The archetypal dragon, a composite of different living animals, has been popular for centuries, and we still tell stories about it today. One other monster seems to match the dragon in popularity, though it is not among the ranks of the traditional or legendary. Since their discovery in the late 18th century, dinosaurs have been wildly popular in both science and mass culture. The scientific status of dinosaurs as animals has not prevented people from viewing them as monsters, and in some cases, treating these prehistoric reptiles like dragons. This thesis investigates the relationship between the dragon and the dinosaur and the interplay between dragon iconography and dinosaur imagery in five dinosaur monster films from the mid-20th century: The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), Gojira (1954), Godzilla Raids Again (1955), Gorgo (1961), and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964). In addressing the arguments other critics have made against equating the dragon with the dinosaur, I will show that the two monstrous categories are treated as similar entities in specific instances, such as in monster- slaying narratives. The five films analyzed in this thesis are monster-slaying narratives that use the dinosaur in place of the dragon, thus “draconifying” the dinosaur. -

Of the inner life of the Japanese the world at large knows but little: their religion, their superstitions, their ways of thought, the hidden springs by which they move--all these are as yet mysteries.' This invisible life referred to by Mr. Mitford is the Unfamiliar Japan of which I have been able to obtain a few glimpses. The reader may, perhaps, be disappointed by their rarity; for a residence of little more than four years among the people--even by one who tries to adopt their habits and customs--scarcely suffices to enable the foreigner to begin to feel at home in this world of strangeness.
