Press Start The Reliquaries of Hyrule The Reliquaries of Hyrule: A Semiotic and Iconographic Analysis of Sacred Architecture Within Ocarina of Time Jared Hansen University of Oregon Abstract This study is a semiotic and iconographic analysis of the sacred architecture in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, 1998). Through an analysis of the visual elements of the game, the researcher found evidence of visual metaphors that coded three temples as sacred spaces. This coding of the temples is accomplished through the symbolism of progression that matches the design of shrines and cathedrals, drawing on iconography and other symbolism associated with Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian sacred architecture. Such indications of sacred spaces highlight the ways in which these virtual environments are designed to symbolize the progression of the player from secular to sacred, much like the player’s progression from zero to hero. By using the architecture and symbolism of the three aforementioned belief systems, Ocarina of Time signifies these temples as reliquaries—that is, sacred places that house reverential items as part of the apotheosis of the player. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1994 21/4 True Words, Silence, and the Adamantine Dance On Japanese Mikkyo and the Formation of the Shingon Discourse Fabio R am b e lli This paper deals with Japanese esoteric Buddhism (Mikkyo), in particular the Shingon tradition, as it relates to the emergence of new and peculiar epistemological concerns. Through a discussion of the kenmitsu system outlined by Kuroda Toshio,the paper first situates Mikkyo within the reli gious and institutional framework of medieval Japan, underlining its lim- inal and heterological nature as both an institutionalized discourse and a reservoir of oppositional possibilities. The paper then analyzes the forma tion of Shingon orthodoxy as an attempt to systematize the Tantric field in Japan through a re-organization of preexisting religious doctrines and practices. Special attention is given to the actual articulation of the ken mitsu episteme and its orders of significance. Finally, the paper outlines some fundamental epistemological tenets of Mikkyo discourse. Though it focuses on Shingon discourse and orthodoxy, this paper confronts basic epistemic assumptions and discursive practices common to the multi farious forms of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to describe the discourse of Japanese esoteric Buddhism (particularly the Shingon 具百 tradition) as it developed in conjunction with the emergence of a distinctive form of philosophical reflection on signs and the formation of a corpus of An earlier draft of this essay, entitled “Kenmitsu Episteme and Mikkyo Heterology: On the Semiotic Doctrines and Practices in Medieval Japan,” was presented at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Association for A sian Studies, Los Angeles, March 1993. -
The Decline of Buddhism in India
The Decline of Buddhism in India It is almost impossible to provide a continuous account of the near disappearance of Buddhism from the plains of India. This is primarily so because of the dearth of archaeological material and the stunning silence of the indigenous literature on this subject. Interestingly, the subject itself has remained one of the most neglected topics in the history of India. In this book apart from the history of the decline of Buddhism in India, various issues relating to this decline have been critically examined. Following this methodology, an attempt has been made at a region-wise survey of the decline in Sind, Kashmir, northwestern India, central India, the Deccan, western India, Bengal, Orissa, and Assam, followed by a detailed analysis of the different hypotheses that propose to explain this decline. Asian Studies III (XIX), 1 (2015), pp.9–27 Shaping Darkness in hyakki yagyō emaki Raluca NICOLAE* Abstract In Japanese culture, the yōkai, the numinous creatures inhabiting the other world and, sometimes, the boundary between our world and the other, are obvious manifestations of the feeling of fear, “translated” into text and image. Among the numerous emaki in which the yōkai appear, there is a specific type, called hyakki yagyō (the night parade of one hundred demons), where all sorts and sizes of monsters flock together to enjoy themselves at night, but, in the end, are scattered away by the first beams of light or by the mysterious darani no hi, the fire produced by a powerful magical invocation, used in the Buddhist sect Shingon. The nexus of this emakimono is their great number, hyakki, (one hundred demons being a generic term which encompasses a large variety of yōkai and oni) as well as the night––the very time when darkness becomes flesh and blood and starts marching on the streets. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 16/2-3 Honji Suijaku Faith Susan Tyler The term shinbutsu shugo 神仏習合 is used when speaking of the early rapprochement of S h in to and Buddhism, while honji suijaku 本地垂逆 is most often used to refer to a theory according to which the kami were treated as incarnations of the Buddhist deities. This relationship 01 kami and buddhas is the major characteristic and apparent content of Buddhist/Shinto syncretism and the term konjt suijaku can be used to refer to fully developed syncretism. The impression given by most books about either Shinto or Bud dhism is that they were separate religions with borders that over lapped thanks to the theory of honji suijaku. On the other hand, innocent reading of texts such as Heike monogatari and observation of religious practice and religious places today suggest instead that mingled Shinto and Buddhism has been, and in some instances still is, an important system of belief and practice. Further investigation confirms this perception. Institutional mingling was pervasive enough to occasion widespread destruction when the religions were declared separate; and personal devotion was a complicated and effective par taking of both Shinto and Buddhism. The idea that Shinto can be studied separately from Buddhism, with still separate attention given to honji suijaku, is due not to a study of history, but to an overemphasis on doctrine to define reli gion and to the motives for the strict separation of Shinto and Buddhism, both in fact and in scholarship, from early Meiji until the end of the Second World War.* In reaction, it has recently 1 This is not due just to the attitude of scholars. -

As amulets, these objects are meant to be carried by a person at all times in which they wish to receive the benefits that an omamori is said to offer. In modern times, in addition to being a religious object, these amulets have become accessories for cell-phones, bags, purses, and automobiles. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2017 i Abstract Shinto is a native Japanese religion with a history that goes back thousands of years. Because of its close ties to Japanese culture, and Shinto’s strong emphasis on place in its practice, it does not seem to be the kind of religion that would migrate to other areas of the world and convert new practitioners. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice. -

Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions.
