These include a number of normative “guidelines” documents, such as the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality and the Guidelines for Safe Use of Wastewater and Excreta in Agriculture and Aquaculture. Documents of this type are intended to provide a basis for standard setting. They represent a consensus view among experts on the risk to health represented by various media and activities and on the effec- tiveness of control measures in protecting health. They are based on critical review of the available evidence. Wherever possible and appropriate, such guidelines docu- ments also describe the principal characteristics of the monitoring and assessment of the safety of the medium under consideration as well as the principal factors affect- ing decisions to be made in developing strategies for the control of the health hazards concerned. The Guidelines for Safe Recreational Water Environments are published in two volumes: • Volume 1: Coastal and Fresh Waters provides a review and assessment of the health hazards encountered during recreational use of coastal and freshwater environments. It includes the derivation of guideline values and explains the basis for the decision to derive or not to derive them. It addresses a wide range of types of hazard, including hazards leading to drowning and injury, water quality, exposure to heat, cold and sunlight, and dangerous aquatic organisms; and provides background information on the different types of recreational water activity (swimming, surfing, etc.) to enable informed readers to interpret the Guidelines in light of local and regional circumstances. With regard to water quality, separate chapters address faecal pollution, free-living microorganisms, freshwater algae, marine algae and chemical aspects.

The Pacific coastal range extends almost continuously from the southernmost tip of California to the northernmost corner of British Colombia and around coastal Alaska. These mountains are part of the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a term which refers to the active geology that exists all the way around the Pacific Ocean, affecting every coast it touches. The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the Pacific Ocean (or rather, the “plate” of earth’s crust beneath it) floats about on top of the molten core of the earth and bumps up against continents. Where the ocean and the continents meet, the pressure between them forces molten lava to the surface of the earth. After thirty million years of bumping, exploding, and oozing, the hardened lava forms majestic, cone-shaped mountains, many of which still contain fire at their cores. The volcanoes occasionally spew lava, rocks, gases, ash, and steam, and once in a great while, they blow their tops, as Mount St. Helens did in Washington State in 1980. More often, though, the heat that is generated by the earth’s plates grinding into one another is released more slowly through cracks and fissures in the volcano. Underground reservoirs of water are heated, expand, and are forced to the surface, producing hotsprings whose temperatures range anywhere from 90- to 160-degrees Fahrenheit. These natural pools are loaded with dissolved minerals from the earth that long have been believed to carry healing powers.

We have attempted to model the fishermen’s behaviour using data collected by an observer on board fishing vessels. This enabled us to estimate the amounts of discards, which were added to the catches landed, collected by ISMAR-CNR Ancona. Discards were calculated for the period 1987-1999, as their values were negligible before 1987. Stock assessment on the entire data series from 1975-1999 was carried out by means of Virtual Population Analysis (VPA). Discarding behaviour differs among ports due to different local customs and market conditions. The quantity added to the annual total catch ranged from 900 tonnes to 4000 tonnes, corre- sponding to between 2% and 15% of the total corrected catch.

S. §§ 672-680d) and the regulations in 28 Pa. Code Chapter 18, it is unlawful to operate a public bathing place without first obtaining a permit from the Department of Health. Once construction has been completed, it is the responsibility of the owner/operator of the public bathing place to contact the district office of the Pennsylvania Department of Health and arrange for an operational inspection (See Page 3 – District Offices of the Department of Health).     The non-stop course record of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the DW non-stop course record, set by Brian Greenham and Tim Cornish of Richmond and Reading Canoe Clubs. The record stands at 15 hours 34 minutes and despite better boat technology and improved training, it has (officially, at least) remained untouched. Steve Baker and Duncan Capps of Richmond Canoe Club and the Army Canoe Union surpassed it in 2000 with a time of 15 hours 18 minutes, but by the time they reached Westminster the race had long been cancelled due to the dangerous conditions, and their ‘new’ record was disregarded Breaking the record requires a combination of factors: a genuinely world- class crew, little wind (or a tail wind at worst), and good flow on the Kennet and Thames. This combination has eluded the race for some time. Below is a short Q&A with Brian Greenham and Tim Cornish to mark the 40th anniversary of their record-breaking run follows: Q: What does setting the DW record mean to you now? Tim: When we set the record in 1979 we already had the record from the previous year and it was being broken regularly so it was not that significant at the time. Winning the race was the thing. As time has passed I guess it has become more meaningful and significant. Brian: I think the one big advantage I always feel we had was we were not trying to set a record but just trying to win.
