TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 44 ______

The War Next Door: Scotland and the Troubles, Ep 2/2  LAST IN SERIES Tuesday, 19 November, 2019 BBC Scotland, 10pm-11pm

The concluding part of a powerful documentary series charting Scotland’s role in the three decade-long conflict in Northern Ireland, which came to be known as The Troubles. Through first person testimony from across the religious and political divide, expert commentary and archive footage, this episode shows how, as the years take their toll on the people living in Northern Ireland, the connections to Scotland run deep.

From an IRA bomb on Shetland’s Sullom Voe oil terminal in 1981 to a plastic bullets factory in Sanquhar, Scotland’s people and places are closely connected to The Troubles. For one mother, Helen Whitters, who had moved with her family from Northern Ireland over to Scotland and back again to Northern Ireland, tragedy arrived at her door after her 15-year-old son, Paul, was hit by a plastic bullet fired by an RUC officer on 15 April 1981.

Following a series of deaths caused by the firing of plastic bullets in riots, campaigners in Dumfries and Galloway stage a protest against the fact they were being manufactured just 12 miles away from the coast of Northern Ireland. More than 30 years after they served in Northern Ireland on the front line, Scottish soldiers reflect on their still-raw experiences of the Warrenpoint bomb and the aftermath of the death in 1981 of IRA hunger striker, Bobby Sands.
