    (Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context.     PRESS RELEASE scottishballet.co.uk Scottish Ballet to take over televisions this Christmas with two special BBC commissions Scottish Ballet is delighted to announce that the 50th anniversary year will culminate with two special BBC commissions, which will see the company take over televisions this festive period. In a year of celebrations for Scotland’s national dance company, Scottish Ballet’s 50th anniversary comes to a spectacular close with the world premiere of CEO / Artistic Director Christopher Hampson’s The Snow Queen. The glittering new production will provide the stage for a special performance capture that will be broadcast on BBC Scotland and BBC Four, and close the story on the Five Wishes campaign and a heartwarming documentary of the same name that will be broadcast on BBC One (Scotland) and BBC Scotland. The Snow Queen BBC Scotland audiences will be treated to a special performance of this new ballet as the glittering production takes over their homes, with a feature length screening. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s much-loved tale, The Snow Queen is a story of love and friendship. From the bustle of a winter’s market to the shivers of a fairytale forest, the production takes a journey to the Snow Queen’s palace and finds her surrounded by the icy fragments of an enchanted mirror. Guaranteed to transport the whole family to a place of wonder, The Snow Queen is choreographed by Christopher Hampson, in collaboration with multi-award winning designer Lez Brotherston. Set to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, the score will be performed by the full Scottish Ballet Orchestra.

Catherine started performing stand-up in 2015 and since then has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks of UK and Irish comedy. In 2016, she was a finalist in both the BBC New Comedy Awards and Funny Women, drawing praise in the final of the former for having “a distinctive voice and a story you’d like to hear” (Chortle) and in the latter for being “pretty much the perfect comedy package” (Beyond The Joke). 2016 also saw Catherine and fellow comic Cally Beaton perform their show Catcall for a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe, enjoying packed houses and stellar reviews. The following year, Catherine performed as part of the prestigious Pleasance Comedy Reserve at the Edinburgh Fringe and, in 2018, she took her debut solo show, Immaculate, to the festival. An autobiographical hour about her life as the bisexual, OCD daughter of the Catholic deacon, Immaculate received widespread acclaim, the Times newspaper describing it in their four star review as “the sort of perfectly structured Edinburgh debut you always hope for and rarely get to see.” August 2019 saw Catherine’s second hour-long show, Lemon, enjoy a month of sold-out shows and excellent reviews.

This year we have taken on 2 new venues… added to The Caves are The Tron and The Store (formerly Grv). We have 84 shows appearing with us, 81 are comedy, 2 are theatre and one of them is our late night Disco in a Dungeon. What fun! Last year we had 6 spaces and managed to get ourselves an Book some tickets online, over the phone or at our box offi ce in the Edinburgh Award Nomination with Josie Long. There were rumours Caves (we’ve also got a little box offi ce in The Store). Grab a drink of other possible nominations, but we may have started those. This and maybe some nosh.
