1 CURATORIAL STATEMENT Working across multiple creative platforms, we champion a new generation of thinkers, makers, risk-takers and agitators. We lead this through our program of events, exhibitions and performances, while providing a support framework including mentorship, collaboration, residency programs and workshops.

Through our broad creative program of established and emerging art forms; young people are given the opportunity to develop their own works and practice, or be a part of an inclusive, diverse creative community.

Platform Arts reserves the right to only accept bookings that address our curatorial statement.

STAFFING A member of the Platform staff must be present at all times when the hirer is in the venue and building. Due to the configuration and safety requirements of this unique building, the Venue Supervisor is to remain near the downstairs entrance (Gheringhap Street) to monitor entry and egress while the duty Technician will assist with the technical requirements of shows upstairs in the .

Members of the Platform technical and front of house staff work under the conditions of the Live Performance Award 2010.

2 STAGE DESCRIPTION The Theatre is a floor space on the First Floor of the former Geelong Law Courts with a 128 seat retractable seating bank. Additional seats can be added to a maximum of 140. Alternatively, the seating bank can be retracted allowing for up-to 200 pax ‘standing room only’.

The designated stage area is covered with black tarquette over original parquetry flooring. Due to heritage limitations no screwing ​ into the floor or walls is permissible. The parquetry flooring continues, uncovered, under the seating bank. The tarquette can be ​ removed from the stage area with the hirer bearing the cost of removal and return.

STAGING UNITS (BOARDS) These items are heavy and will require 2 Platform staff and a minimum of 1 hour to set-up. Although there is no cost for the use of the staging units, all costs associated with set-up and pack down will be borne by the hirer.

4 PERFORMANCE SPACE

SEATING Retractable seating bank consists of 128 seats. 2 additional rows of 10 seats can be added depending on event and stage requirements.

THEATRE DRAPES The original heritage glass walls are still visible on the sides of the theatre. Side curtains using a hand pulley system can be opened to allow natural light into the space from both sides.

The Theatre is fully masked on US and side walls with black wool drapes.

US curtain can be opened with hand pulley system to expose a white wall for use as Cyclorama or projection screen.

STAGE DRAPES/MASKING FOH curtain is motorised with button controls located on OP side. This is not a silent running system. Four static hung legs (2 per side) with a width of 2m each allow for some wing space.

Patching points are located at numerous locations within theatre, backstage, dressing rooms, foyer and box office (downstairs) areas.

LOADING IN ACCESS The loading dock is accessed via a lane on the upper side of the building off Gheringhap Street. Trucks are able to reverse to goods lift, which is accessed via a dock leveller. A Platform staff member must be present while goods lift is in operation. No personnel are to ride in the goods lift.

6 SCENE DOCK The scene dock also doubles as a tech storage space for Platform and may also contain both the baby grand piano & the EWP. Please notify the Venue Coordinator if you have large items to bump-in.

DRESSING ROOMS Dressing rooms are on the stage level of the building and located OP of the stage. There is corridor access to PS entrance point.

Backstage accessible and gender neutral toilet and shower is shared. Additional toilets available nearby.

SHOW RELAY Both Dressing Rooms are equipped with relay screens (visual & audio) showing Performance space stage area.

THEATRE ACCESS The performance space does not have a stage door. Access to backstage for performers is via the foyer and foyer corridor to the BACKSTAGE door.

7 LIGHTING EQUIPMENT

BARS The performance space has a total of five lighting Bars. Three of these are static, and two can be lowered via a motorised winch. The winch controls are located on the OP wall of the stage. All lighting bars are at 6m height (when fully raised). Each lighting bar has 12 10A, 240v circuit outlets. Circuit numbering starts from PS on each bar. Outlets are spaced 390mm apart. Total length of each bar is 6m.

There are no dimmer patch points at stage level but a 4 cable loom can be run from control platform to DS PS if required.

HOUSE LIGHTS A set of 2 Floodlights are available as houselights during performances, they are currently rigged on LX 1 and overlook the seating bank and are controlled via the lighting desk for ease of use. Four banks of dimmable fluorescent lighting installed in ceiling of Theatre. Four levels of intensity available. These are operated from a panel to the right of the main audience entrance (east wall). These can only be used for a performance through information relay (talkback) to usher as the control panel is not accessible from Control Platform.

15 ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT

PIANO Platform Arts owns a baby grand Yamaha piano that is available to hirers. The costs of moving and returning to storage are incorporated into the hirers’ set-up time. Costs for tuning will be borne by the hirer.

POWER There are a limited number of 15amp double power points at stage level.

FOLLOW-SPOT Is available upon request prior to an event; limited position.

GAFFER & ELECTRICAL TAPE Costs for the reasonable use of these supplies are included in your venue hire costs. Excessive use may incur additional costs to the hirer.

HAZE, SMOKE and FLAME If you require the use of any equipment producing smoke or flame, you must discuss your requirements with the Venue Coordinator p: 5224 2815. Due to conditions in our lease, the use of Haze, Smoke or Flame is strictly controlled and will attract an additional cost.

Any charges arising from false alarms, including the cost of Fire Brigade attendance, are the responsibility of the hirer.

WORKSHOP & TOOLS Platform Arts has a limited range of tools available for repairs, set-up and pack-down of sets.

16 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PRE-PRODUCTION MEETING For bookings over 3 days or more it is requested that a pre-production meeting occur, in person or over the phone, two weeks prior to bump-in.

CONTROL POSITION The control platform is located at the western end of the auditorium (Gheringhap street end) and is accessible through a separate doorway off the Foyer corridor. The stair case is metal and narrow and there are potential noise issues when using the stairs while the performance is in progress.

The Control platform sits approximately 6 meters high and has some sight line interference from the LX bars.

COURTHOUSE CAFÉ This is a separate business tenant and does not form part of the Platform Arts facilities. Tea, coffee and catering can be directly ordered from the Courthouse Café. E:[email protected] ​ P:5224 1588 / M:0433926829

BOX OFFICE Platform Arts has an online ticketing system linked through our website & social media pages. Platform Arts manages all ticketing relating to activities and events within the venue.

ENTRANCE & EGRESS The Gheringhap entrance and downstairs area is shared with the Courthouse Café. The Foyer is a Platform Arts controlled area. After 5pm, the Little Malop Street doors are exit only.

SECRETARIAT SERVICES Access to photocopier and stationary supplies can be provided at cost to the hirer.

17 AIR-CONDITIONING & HEATING o Platform Arts spaces are controlled by a central reverse-cycle system set at a constant 22 .​ Slight temperature variations may occur ​ due to sun-light on windows, occupancy numbers etc

GREEN ROOM A Green Room is located on PS stage level. It is also used as a meeting room. The Green Room must be left clean or cleaning costs may be borne by the hirer.

RUBBISH All rubbish and extraneous items must be removed from the Performance space, backstage & dock areas by the hirer.

SMOKING & ALCOHOL Platform is strictly a smoke, drug and alcohol free venue.

INSURANCE As included in the Conditions of Hire, all hirers are to provide Platform Arts with a copy of their Public Liability Insurance policy to $20 million.

DISABLED ACCESS The Performance space is on the second level of the building. A lift is available from the entrance level to the foyer. The backstage area is flat, with standard doorways. Disability toilets are available on all levels.

SAFETY & SAFE WORK PRACTICES It is the responsibility of the Hirer to ensure a safe working environment for their staff, performers and volunteers AND the Platform staff. The hirer shall, at all times, abide by the directions of Platform Arts staff in matters of safety and/or damage (or potential damage) to venue or equipment. All electrical equipment entering the building must display current test and tag tags.

PARKING There is no parking available to hirers on site. There is ample street metered parking on both Gheringhap and Little Malop streets and a ticketed parking complex diagonally opposite Platform Arts building. Please note that this parking complex closes at 3am with free parking after 6pm and free parking on weekends. Truck parking MAY be available on site. The Venue Coordinator will advise.

18 REQUIRE OTHER SPACES? Our Rehearsal Space, Meeting Rooms, Gallery, Laneway Area, Foyer and Courtyard Spaces are also available to hire. Enquire directly with Platform Arts to find out more.

REHEARSAL SPACE Our Rehearsal Space is suitable for rehearsals, workshops, yoga classes and corporate events. It can also be used as an additional ​ dressing room space or as a warm-up area for performances or a stand-alone performance space, with dance mirrors available. The ​ space has a high ceiling and art deco features, with abundant natural light and parquetry flooring.

The Rehearsal Space is equipped with a data projector, wall-mounted speakers and air conditioner, with access to an accessible toilet and kitchenette.

19 THE BOARD ROOM + THE LAB (MEETING ROOMS)

The Board Room and The Lab are great spaces for meetings, interviews, presentations, workshops and training. Both spaces are light filled, with high ceilings and art deco features. The Board Room is designed for formal meetings, whilst The Lab is designed for more intimate creative gatherings.
