Condé Nast traveler When dusk stretches its mantle over the city of Seven Hills, when the litany of squealing trams gradually dies down, Lisbon prepares to show its most versatile and eclectic side. Because night-time in the Portuguese capital is full of possibilities capable of satisfying the most demanding night owls: terraces to chill out, from where it is possible to admire the magical palette of colours in the evening sky, dancing in nightclubs to the latest electronic music from Europe, meeting artists in industrial spaces in the purest style of Berlin or immersing oneself in the Portuguese culture of fado and "saudade" in traditional but modernised fado houses. All this is possible in this city that may seem melancholy during the day, but is cheerful and vibrant like few others by night.     16 LUÍS MIGUEL BRITO Intercultural interpretation discourses, techniques and strategies used by tour guides in the Coach Museum, Lisbon: Eight issues LUÍS MIGUEL BRITO Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril The Coach Museum in Lisbon houses one of the finest collections of coaches in the world. It is the second most visited museum in Portugal and it is often included in the Lisbon city tour. Tourist guides often perform visits to the museum. They are mediators between heritage and tourists, involving them not only in the collection but also in the life of the people who used the coaches. A guided tour to the museum can be either a nightmare or nice dream. It will be a nightmare if the guide conveys uninteresting information about the objects and vehicles exhibited, if s/he is centred on him/herself. But it can also be very lively and interesting if interpretation strategies are centred around the tourist and his/her culture. The aim of intercultural interpretation is to awaken different kinds of emotions in the tourist, from piety to amusement, using fantasy and reality. This paper discusses the different characteristics tourist guides’ interpretation assumes in Lisbon’s Coach Museum. The researcher heard the speech of fifty professional guides visiting the museum, during the months of September and October 2009. Data obtained were included in his PhD thesis. The anthropological technique applied is direct observation, defined as “direct involvement of the field researcher with the social group studied, within the parameters of the group standards” (Iturra, 1987: 149). The paper is divided into the following parts: introduction (including tourist information versus intercultural heritage interpretation, methodology, interpretation- eight issues, and final considerations.

The building has not undergone any alteration. The main facade and part of the north facade are turned to the Terreiro D. João V and the south facade to the Alameda Garden. The remaining facades of the building are facing the patio. The Cerco Garden and the Hunting Park (Tapada) are completely walled, and some adjustments have been made to its limits for safety reasons, specially the access to fire fighting vehicles. It represents one of the most magnificent works undertaken by KingJoão V, who had exceptional cultural and economic conditions that allowed him to stand out among other European monarchies as a powerful sovereign of a vast multicontinental empire.

The convent was built in the 15th Century, it survived the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755 with hardly any damage, and was classified as a Building of Public Interest in 1984. With its remarkable facilities, it is an ideal venue for organising a wide range of events including conventions, presentations and weddings. SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT THIS VENUE: The material used for the construction of Convento do Beato; mainly Portuguese white marble with veins of red jasper, gave it not only its very special appearance but also made it remarkably strong, allowing it to survive the 1755 earthquake.
