Mijuskovic Full Member International Association of Greek Philosophy University of Athens, Greece ORCID iD: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5950-7146 URL: http://worldphilosophynetwork.weebly.com E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract: In contrast to a little bit utopian standpoint offered by Plato in his teachings about the state or politeia where rulers aren`t “in love with power but in virtue”, Aristotle's teaching on the same subject seems very realistic and pragmatic. In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". Sean Hannan Classics of Social & Political Thought I Autumn 2014 Discussion Notes for Aristotle’s Politics BOOK I 1. Introducing Aristotle a. Aristotle was born around 384 BCE (in Stagira, far north of Athens but still a ‘Greek’ city) and died around 322 BCE, so he lived into his early sixties. b. That means he was born about fifteen years after the trial and execution of Socrates. He would have been approximately 45 years younger than Plato, under whom he was eventually sent to study at the Academy in Athens. c. Aristotle stayed at the Academy for twenty years, eventually becoming a teacher there himself. When Plato died in 347 BCE, though, the leadership of the school passed on not to Aristotle, but to Plato’s nephew Speusippus. (As in the Republic, the stubborn reality of Plato’s family connections loomed large.) d. After living in Asia Minor from 347-343 BCE, Aristotle was invited by King Philip of Macedon to serve as the tutor for Philip’s son Alexander (yes, the Great). Aristotle taught Alexander for eight years, then returned to Athens in 335 BCE. There he founded his own school, the Lyceum. i. Aside: We should remember that these schools had substantial afterlives, not simply as ideas in texts, but as living sites of intellectual energy and exchange. The Academy lasted from 387 BCE until 83 BCE, then was re-founded as a ‘Neo-Platonic’ school in 410 CE. It was finally closed by Justinian in 529 CE. (Platonic philosophy was still being taught at Athens from 83 BCE through 410 CE, though it was not disseminated through a formalized Academy.) The Lyceum lasted from 334 BCE until 86 BCE, when it was abandoned as the Romans sacked Athens. -

We will trace key figures and issues that move the church in England through the Middle Ages and that lead to its break with Rome in the 16th century. We will read occasional primary documents and poetry to taste the flavour of the time. We will study the catechism published by Bishop Alexander Nowell in 1572 in order to understand Anglican teaching on the Law, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and the Sacraments. MUNA SHRESTHA Assistant Professor of Tribhuvan University, Nepal Mahendra Multiple Campus, Nepalgun, Nepal E-Mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT This paper tries to interpret John Donne’s as a religious poet. His works are better understood through the optic of Biblical knowledge, the backdrop of God’s revelation of Himself. A poet’s heart is filled with sympathy by the Spirit of his Maker and mind is illumined by His Word recognizes a much deeper sense of inspiring reality. In his poems, Donne uses the most effective and intimate of words to express his relation with God. The metaphysical poetry not only explains the existence of earthly things, but also reveals the religious significance of unnoticed or hitherto unappreciated aspects of temporal things. He also portrays satire in his poetry that deal the problem of true religion and it is a matter of great importance to Donne. He argues that it is better to examine carefully one's religious beliefs than blindly to follow any established tradition. Key words: John Donne, metaphysical poetry, religious, God. 1. INTRODUCTION English metaphysical poetry is the richest and most widely ranging in the language. Its style was most enthusiastic in the seventeenth century and it not only brought the best devotional poetry but also the finest lyrics, satires, pastorals and visionary meditations of that era (Edwin Honig). The poets gave the signal to the readers to enter into a new empire of poetry with a sense of attachment and belonging between different objects of nature and human sentiments, feeling and passion. -

Donne's "La Corona" and Christ's Mediatorial Office R. R. DUBINSKI Ijy pointing out the affinities between "La Corona" and certain traditional meditative practives, studies by Louis Martz and Helen Gardner have provided important contexts for understanding the poem's structure and organization. Martz contends that the poem "is a complex synthesis of methods and materials from both rehgious and profane poetry, from the Uturgy of the Church, and from all the various ways of meditating on the life of Christ," but the fundamental impulse and outline of the sequence, he emphasizes, is found in the Catholic meditations of the corona.^ Martz draws analogies between "La Corona" and Jesuit treatises (in particular one by Sabin Chambers) to show how the meditations of the corona may have exerted a very strong influence on the construction, divisions, and general procedure of Donne's sequence.^ Helen Gardner argues that the sonnets are in- spired by liturgical prayer and praise, especially the meditation on the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary adapted by Donne to a meditation on the life of Christ.^ Both Martz and Gardner make it clear that "La Corona" has a strong affinity with the long-standing practice of organized meditations on the life of Christ. Both also notice how Donne's poem is characterized by a mixture of Catholic and Protestant emphases. Gardner points out one Cathohc emphasis: "It is doubtful whether Donne felt there was any- thing particularly Cathohc in concentrating on the Mysteries of Faith, or in addressing his second and third sonnets to the Blessed Virgin, or in apostrophizing St. -

He is considered the pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets. His works are noted for their strong, sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially compared to that of his contemporaries. Donne's style is characterised by abrupt openings and various paradoxes, ironies and dislocations. These features, along with his frequent dramatic or everyday speech rhythms, his tense syntax and his tough eloquence, were both a reaction against the smoothness of conventional Elizabethan poetry and an adaptation into English of European baroque and mannerist techniques. His early career was marked by poetry that bore immense knowledge of British society and he met that knowledge with sharp criticism. Another important theme in Donne’s poetry is the idea of true religion, something that he spent much time considering and theorising about. He wrote secular poems as well as erotic and love poems. He is particularly famous for his mastery of metaphysical conceits.[2] Despite his great education and poetic talents, Donne lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. -

If We Look at Elizabethan Poetry from the Vantage Point of a 21St‐Century
If we look at Elizabethan poetry from the vantage point of a 21st‐century university survey course in English Renaissance literature, it is clearly one of the two most prominent genres, together with Elizabethan drama, that we will have to deal with. If we look deeper, we will discern various subgenres, such as epic, love poetry, erotic poems, religious verse, etc.; or we might as well consider some of the most celebrated poets: Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Donne, etc. … Naturally, we will do this – but if we are to understand Elizabethan poetry in its own terms, we need to start by taking a closer look at its socio‐political and cultural context. 1 The first cornerstone of the Elizabethan socio‐political and cultural context is humanist education. Humanism, as an educational reform movement, began in Italy in the late 13th and developed throughout the 14th century. Initially, it was characterized by the recovery, study and translation of important works from Greek and Latin antiquity as well as a renewed interest in classical rhetoric and style – as a reaction against the restrictive scholasticism and exegetical practices of medieval education dominated by the Catholic church. It was also associated with the desire of Italian city states (such as the Venetian and Florentine republics) to claim continuity between them and ancient Rome, and by extension ancient Greece. Important early humanists include Francesco Petrarca, Giovanni Boccacio, Leonardo Bruni, Poggio Bracciolini, Marcilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola, Niccolo Machiavelli. Humanism spread north in the 14th and 15th centuries influencing scholars and teachers in France, Germany, the Netherlands and eventually in the 16th century also in England. -

But, if all communities aim at some good, the state or political community, which is the highest of all, and which embraces all the rest, aims at good in a greater degree than any other, and at the highest good. Some people think that the qualifications of a statesman, king, house- holder, and master are the same, and that they differ, not in kind, but only in the number of their subjects. For example, the ruler over a few is called a master; over more, the manager of a household; over a still larger number, a statesman or king, as if there were no difference be- tween a great household and a small state. The distinction which is made between the king and the statesman is as follows: When the government is personal, the ruler is a king; when, according to the rules of the politi- cal science, the citizens rule and are ruled in turn, then he is called a statesman. But all this is a mistake; for governments differ in kind, as will be evident to any one who considers the matter according to the method which has hitherto guided us. -

Perhaps the most lasting and public of all miracles, those to which Islamic philosophers devoted so much of their reflections, were the political achievements of the prophets: how otherwise obscure figures like Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad came to shape the thoughts and actions of so much of civilized humanity. Within the high culture of Islamic civilization, the thought and writings of an itinerant Persian doctor and court administrator we know as Avicenna (370/980~28/1037) came to play a similarly central role: for almost a millenium, each of the tra ditions of Islamic thought claiming a wider, universal human validity has appealed either directly to his works or to logical and metaphysical disciplines whose Islamic forms were directly grounded in them. This study considers some of the central philosophic under pinnings of that achievement. -

Diametros nr 8 (czerwiec 2006): 56– 67 Is Political Life A Happy Life According To Aristotle? Tomasz Kuniski Aristotle’s conception of happy life is still a matter of debate among scholars. It is not obvious whether in his works Aristotle introduced only one idea of happy life or more. The status of political life is neither clear and further questions can be raised; does Aristotle consider it as a happy life, does happiness constitute of political life and what is the relation between political and theoretical life. In this article I shall try to examine these issues. I shall refer to the best known and accomplished Aristotelian interpretations by Kraut and Broadie as well as to interpretative articles by other authors. First I shall reconstruct their main line of argument, then I shall try to show the advantages and drawbacks (if any) of their interpretations and finally I shall give my own point of view on this matter and, perhaps, reconcile different views on the connection between political and theoretical life in Aristotle’s ethics. As most commentators, I shall focus mainly on the Nicomachean Ethics and occasionally refer to other Aristotle’s ethical works. I think that this approach can be justified by the fact, that, firstly, it is mainly the Nicomachean Ethics that raises difficulties in interpreting Aristotle’s view on happy life, secondly, as some may argue, Aristotle contradicts himself in this treatise. Although Richard Kraut is sure about consistency of Aristotle’s ethical theory, he is aware that this kind of argument can be raised: “Of course, if Aristotle says in one place that happiness consists in contemplation alone, and elsewhere that it consists in other goods as well, then he has contradicted himself”1. -
