4 1 Giessen and the JLU

Welcome to Giessen – university and convention town and cultural centre. Giessen is si- tuated in the middle of Germany by the charming riverscape of the and enclosed by the beautiful scenery of the submountainous area of Middle . Owing to an excellent access to public transport, cities like Frankfurt, and Mainz can be reached quickly and, with a semester ticket, free of charge. Giessen, a small but diversified place, is a town full of openness and energy where there is never a dull moment. Having a major university and a university of applied sciences (THM) Giessen offers a wide range of academic and leisure opportunities. In no other German city you will find more students per inhabitant than in Giessen. More than 38.000 students have a strong impact on the city and its night- life.

Since it was founded more than 400 years ago, Justus Liebig University (JLU) has develo- ped from a small, provincial university to a major comprehensive university teaching a wide range of subjects with a number of areas of excellence. Those who teach, research, study and work here appreciate the assets of having a variety of subjects. Eleven faculties and eight scientific centres offer a variety of courses. JLU offers a combination of subjects in the research disciplines Humans – Nutrition - Environment including Human and Veterina- ry Medicine, Agricultural Sciences and Nutritional Sciences which is unique in Germany. In addition, it offers the complete spectrum of academic programmes from Natural Scien- ces to Law and Economics, Social and Educational Sciences and Languages and Cultural Studies – an extraordinarily extensive range of opportunities in teaching and research.

2 3 Studying at Faculty 09

Worldwide nutrition security and healthy nutrition are in the focus of teaching and research of the faculty 09 – Agriculture, Nutritional Sciences and Home Economics and Environmen- tal Management. In this context, the principles of sustainability, environmental compatibility, economic viability, social compatibility and consumers’ interest and animal welfare are consi- dered. The scope of issues dealt with from a scientific and social economic perspective ranges from the primary production of food to its processing and the development of environmentally friendly land use and mass flow systems.

Studying and teaching Agriculture, Home Economics and Nutritional Sciences and Environ- mental Management in Giessen requires a certain down-to-earth mentality and interest in the sciences of life. The concept and structure of the academic programme are unique in Germany and therefore a matter of particular concern to us: Acquisition of a broad-based general know- ledge or specialization - both are equally possible. The enormous freedom of choice of subjects allows for a custom-made design of your studies. It is your personal aims which determine your course of study. What we have to offer is our long-standing experience and well-proven concepts of learning.

In 2001 our academic programmes were changed to Bachelor and Master degree program- mes. Since then the complete educational programme has been modularized: The courses are closed units which are based on each other and can be combined. The academic programmes have a uniform structure. At the beginning the students obtain a well-found training in the gene- ral scientific and subject related basics necessary. The wide choice of courses and the uniform scope of modules allows for a flexible organization of studies during profile formation which is geared to the individual professional aims of the students.

8 9 Internationalization

The comprehensive range of courses offered and research opportunities at JLU in the fields Law, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, with a subjects constellation in the fields of natural and life sciences unique in Germany, currently attracts more than 28.000 students. Approximately 10% of these are international students. The importance of internationalization was already pointed out by Justus Liebig, the namesake of the university, who was called to Giessen as a professor of chemistry in 1824 and encouraged his students to network with colle- agues all over Europe. Since then internationalization has been a central part of the self-image of the Justus-Liebig-University.

In research, international partners and networks have contributed notably to the outstanding scientific achievements of the JLU. Trailblazing studies in lung research, for example, could be carried out in cooperation with partners at Bejing University, Tibet University and Imperial Col- lege London. Exchange and mobility of students and university teachers was supported by the introduction of internationally compatible Bachelor and Master degrees. Since 2007 JLU has been offering international degree courses in English.

The faculty 09 – Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Home Economics and Envi- ronmental Management – offers students an extensive syllabus of Master modules taught in English. In the winter semester 2017/18 the faculty starts a third Master programme entirely taught in English (Insect Biotechnology and Bioresources).

10 11 International Degree Programmes

Internationalization plays a major role at JLU. The faculty 09 - Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Home Economics and Environmental Management - offers three international Master degree programmes in which courses are taught entirely in English. Students from all over the world study here and get an interdisciplinary academic training on a high scientific level. The scope of courses taught in English ranges from microbiology, biochemistry, en- tomology, crop and animal production, to statistics, risk evaluation, global nutrition, economic development and resource economics. International students find support at various counselling centres at the faculty and at the International Office, which offer a wide range of educational and integrative support.

Uniform Structure – Maximum Flexibility

International degree programmes at our faculty have a standard period of study of four semes- ters. The modularized structure of the programmes allows for efficient studying and maximum flexibility. The academic programmes include an internship offering the opportunity to get in contact with potential employers and to gain experience at international companies. Profile modules can be chosen from a wide range of modules. Thus students are able to shape their professional profile according to their individual desires and requirements.

Student Body The student body consists of students of all faculties. Everyone is invited to join in and to contri- bute. We are involved in a number of committees of student self-administration, for example in the faculty council (FBR), examination board and the QSL commission. We meet every Monday in the rooms of the student body at 18.15 h. (Bismarckstr. 37, Basement AUB). But we have also lots of fun: We usually end a successful meeting watching a film of playing board games. We are a friendly community consisting of students from various semesters who support each other. Everyone may participate and volunteer. We are always happy to see new faces! [email protected] Collection of scripts Students from all academic degree programmes of faculty 09 are engaged in the collection of scripts. We collect exam questions and lecture transcripts from you and make them available to all students of the faculty in the form of scripts. Once a week you may buy the scripts on offer during our opening hours. We always appreciate active support, because without your help we would not be able to keep the scripts up to date. You are invited to send us your collected transcripts or exam questions or support us in the sale of the scripts. [email protected] Work Group Nutritional Ecology - AK Ernährungsökologie The work group Nutritional Ecology addresses the interrelation of the nutrition of the individual and social, environment and economic dimensions on an interdisciplinary level. We organize lectures, excursions and film series, but barbecue and brunch events are also a regular part of our programme. We would especially like to address aspects of nutrition which are not suffici- ently considered within the framework of the modules offered. Our programme is not exclusively aimed at students of faculty 09, but at all students interested in topics like nutrition, environment, climate change and sustainability and an exchange about these issues.
