Tropical Birding Trip Report Southeast Brazil: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna, Oct-Nov 2016 SOUTHEAST BRAZIL: Atlantic Rainforest and Savanna October 20th – November 8th, 2016 TOUR LEADER: Nick Athanas Report and photos by Nick Athanas Helmeted Woodpecker - one of our most memorable sightings of the tour It had been a couple of years since I last guided this tour, and I had forgotten how much fun it could be. We covered a lot of ground and visited a great series of parks, lodges, and reserves, racking up a respectable group list of 459 bird species seen as well as some nice mammals. There was a lot of rain in the area, but we had to consider ourselves fortunate that the rainiest days seemed to coincide with our long travel days, so it really didn’t cost us too much in the way of birds. My personal trip favorite sighting was our amazing and prolonged encounter with a rare Helmeted Woodpecker! Others of note included extreme close-ups of Spot-winged Wood-Quail, a surprise Sungrebe, multiple White-necked Hawks, Long-trained Nightjar, 31 species of antbirds, scope views of Variegated Antpitta, a point-blank Spotted Bamboowren, tons of colorful hummers and tanagers, TWO Maned Wolves at the same time, and Giant Anteater. SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL: BEST OF THE ATLANTIC FOREST OCTOBER 8–22, 2017 A trip first, the rarely seen Buff-fronted Owl – Photo: Andrew Whittaker LEADER : ANDREW WHITTAKER LIST COMPILED BY : ANDREW WHITTAKER VICTOR EMANUEL NATURE TOURS , INC . 2525 WALLINGWOOD DRIVE , SUITE 1003 AUSTIN , TEXAS 78746 WWW .VENTBIRD .COM SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL: BEST OF THE ATLANTIC FOREST OCTOBER 8–22, 2017 By Andrew Whittaker Once again, our Brazilian flagship tour visiting the lovely southeast rocked, delivering a bonanza of Atlantic Forest endemics, spectacular scenery, all-around great birding, and wonderful Brazilian cuisine that we have come to expect from this fantastic biologically rich region. First and foremost we tallied 391 species , a whopping 140 of which were regional and/or Brazilian endemics! These figures become all the more impressive when you consider that many of the wider ranging species not included as “endemics” in the preceding tallies are represented in southeast Brazil by distinctive subspecies endemic to the Atlantic Forest region, and that at least 15–25 of these subspecies that we recorded during our tours are likely to be elevated to separate species status in the near future! Beginning in São Paulo, our first destination was Intervales State Park, my own personal favorite among the many great birding spots included in our southeast Brazil trip. Intervales never fails to deliver a huge serving of Atlantic Forest endemics and just plain fantastic birding experiences, and such was the case again this trip. We began the first evening with one of my personal highlights, the fabulous and incredibly cooperative male Long-trained Nightjar . In fact, the male Long-trained Nightjars put on a show for us on two consecutive nights, treating us to multiple close passes, with two males chasing each other just above our heads. -

The object of this review is to relate nest-buildingbehavior to the origin and early evolution of passerinebirds (Order Passeriformes).I present evidence for the hypoth- esis that the combinationof small body size and the ability to place a constructednest where the bird chooses,helped make possiblea vast amountof adaptiveradiation. A great diversity of potential habitats especially accessibleto small birds was created in the late Tertiary by global climatic changes and by the continuing great evolutionary expansion of flowering plants and insects.Cavity or hole nests(in ground or tree), open-cupnests (outside of holes), and domed nests (with a constructedroof) were all present very early in evolution of the Passeriformes,as indicated by the presenceof all three of these basic nest types among the most primitive families of living passerinebirds. Secondary specializationsof these basic nest types are illustratedin the largest and most successfulfamilies of suboscinebirds. Nest site and nest form and structureoften help characterizethe genus, as is exemplified in the suboscinesby the ovenbirds(Furnariidae), a large family that builds among the most diverse nests of any family of birds. The domed nest is much more common among passerinesthan in non-passerines,and it is especially frequent among the very smallestpasserine birds the world over. -

Accepted on 14 December 2017. ABSTRACT: Although species lists from throughout Amazonia have become available, relatively complete inventories based on long- term work remain rare. Longitudinal comparisons at well-studied sites provide the best opportunities for describing communities and identifying changes in regional avifaunas. Within central Amazonia, no region has received as much consistent ornithological coverage as the terra firme forests north of Manaus, Brazil, at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP). Here we provide an updated list of the area, including notes on all species added between 1997 and 2017. We recorded 21 species new for the site, most of which (>75%) are birds that prefer várzea or second-growth forest. This brings the cumulative BDFFP list up to 409 species, the majority (66%) of which inhabit primary terra firme forest. Together, this confirms that the regional terra firme community had been well-characterized by the 1990s, and that species additions to the list over the last 20 years are consistent with a changing landscape as urbanization, agriculture, and second-growth spread from Manaus. -

Brazil's Southwestern Amazonia

His smiley way of living will be always missed. Here our condolences to his family in this difficult moment. Some photos on the report were a contribution by Brian. Rest in peace our good friend! Only in its second edition, the Brazil’s Southwestern Amazonia has now consolidated a much improved two weeks itinerary with a fantastic selection of Amazonian range-restricted species from the Rondonia and Inambari centres of endemism, the both sides of the great Rio Madeira in the states of Rondônia, Amazonas and Acre. And the best news was including again the mega Rondonia Bushbird to our list in a new site. At first the news about cancelling the tough pre-tour extension campsite and our the chances for Rondonia Bushbird may have caused some disappointments - birding at Igarapé São João (part of Campos Amazonicos National Park) was truly amazing and sadly illegal logging turned the visiting impractical. But with positivism, research and help from Brazilian friends (ornithologists and guides – thank you guys!) we 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Brazil’s Southwestern Amazonia 2018 www.birdquest-tours.com surprisingly put all arrangements in time to visit a new site with reliable chances of seeing this enigmatic species. We are very happy for succeeding. With the change we could also offer this time some great river island specialties on the Madeira, besides spending more time in varzea forest in Humaitá. -

O ninho da Catraca não era conhecido, enquanto que o do Grimpei-rinho é apenas brevemente descrito na literatura. Um ninho de Catraca foi encontrado em Monte Alverne, em novembro de 1994. Este diferiu do ninho de outros Hemitriccus spp. principalmente por não ser pendente, sendo fixado lateral- mente a colmos verticais de taquarinha (Chusquea sp.). Esse método de fixação pode ter sido determinado por condições ambientais desfavoráveis à fixação de ninhos pendentes. Porém, se esse for o tipo de ninho usual da espécie, duas interpretações parecem plausíveis. O ninho não pendente pode ser uma adaptação vantajosa para nidificação em taquarais e interpretado como uma sinapomorfia das espécies de Hemitriccus possivelmente associadas a bambu (H. -

SANTOS Departamento de Biologia Geral, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, CP 486, 31270-901, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil Abstract The tyrannids are one of the most diverse groups of birds in the world, and the most numerous suboscine family in the Neotropics. Reflecting such diversity, many taxonomic issues arise in this group, mainly due to morphological similarities, even among phylogenetically distant species. Other issues appear at higher taxonomic levels, mostly brought up by genetic studies, making systematics a rather inconclusive issue. This study looks into the use of DNA barcodes method to discriminate and identify Tyrannidae species occurring in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes of Brazil. We analysed 266 individuals of 71 tyrant-flycatcher species from different geographical locations by sequencing 542 bp of the mtDNA COI gene. The great majority of the analysed species showed exclusive haplotypes, usually displaying low intraspecific diversity and high interspecific divergence. Only Casiornis fuscus and Casiornis rufus, suggested in some studies to belong to a single species, could not be phy- logenetically separated. High intraspecific diversity was observed among Elaenia obscura individuals, which can suggest the existence of cryptic species in this taxon. The same was also observed for Suiriri suiriri, considered by some authors to comprise at least two species, and by others to be divided into three subspecies. -
