But in this anthology a host of new translations '. brings to life the poetry not only of Byzantine, but also Venetian, Ottoman, medieval, and newly independent Greece. With the decline of Byzantium and then the fall of Constantinople in 1453, poets throughout the Greek world turned . away from heroic and religious subject matter and focused on the pain and won der of ordinary life. In Stefanos Sachlikis's poem about life in a Cretan jail or the anonymous animal fables of the fourteenth and fifteenth century, we already sense a new aesthetic in which neither Athens and the classical world, nor Con stantinople and Christianity, are the measure of things. Linguistically as well as thematically, poets from the fourteenth century on increasingly moved away from ancient and ecclesiastical models to writing the way people spoke. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw attempts to return to a "purer" language closer to ancient ideals, but ultimately the language of the people prevailed, paving the way for the literary achievements of the twen tieth century. Unlike many cultures in which literature is written in the high lan guage, in Greece poets tend to leave the learned language to the pedants. -

Buchanan, Chair Professor Emeritus Thomas Turino Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Maria Todorova ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the multilayered connections between music, emotionality, social and cultural belonging, collective memory, and identity discourse. The ethnographic case study for the examination of all these relations and aspects is the Pontic muhabeti or parakathi. Parakathi refers to a practice of socialization and music making that is designated insider Pontic Greek. It concerns primarily Pontic Greeks or Pontians, the descendants of the 1922 refugees from Black Sea Turkey (Gr. Pontos), and their identity discourse of ethno-regionalism. Parakathi references nightlong sessions of friendly socialization, social drinking, and dialogical participatory singing that take place informally in coffee houses, taverns, and households. Parakathi performances are reputed for their strong Pontic aesthetics, traditional character, rich and aesthetically refined repertoire, and intense emotionality. Singing in parakathi performances emerges spontaneously from verbal socialization and emotional saturation. Singing is described as a confessional expression of deeply personal feelings -

The overcast skies and gloomy weather reports forecasting rain were not enough to dampen the spirits of the tens of thousands of Greek Americans who came out to Fifth Avenue to watch or march in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade. Although the threat of bad weather did affect parade turnout, the noticeably smaller crowd made up for its lack of num- bers with exuberance and enthusi- asm. People of all ages waved Greek flags and patriotism ran high, as shouts and cries on behalf of Mace- donia’s Greek identity and against the recent provocations made by Greece’s northern neighbor FY- ROM dominated the Parade. Greece’s recent veto of FYROM’s membership bid at last week’s NA- TO Summit in Bucharest because a mutually acceptable resolution on the latter’s name was not yet reached was reiterated throughout the Parade by emcees, speakers, TNH/COSTAS BEJ marchers and spectators. By cultivating the ethics of an agonistic relation with their ancient predecessors, poets today reinvent cultural literacy and fashion their unique place in literary and intellectual history. But, generally speaking, only through knowledge of the present can the passion for classical antiquity be acquired. Without this knowledge, where could the passion come from? (Nietzsche 1990:340) It has become commonplace today to worry about the decline of cultural literacy. We have all discussed documentations of the diminish- ing interest in our shared (Western or otherwise) intellectual, artistic, and scientific heritage. Educators, journalists, opinion makers, and politicians have diagnosed a gradually weakening transmission of hu- manistic culture to younger generations. That the public no longer has a well-rounded familiarity with literary masterpieces, artistic treasures, historical events, or civic achievements of the past puts at risk the liberal institutions of the public sphere. What binds us together in a common culture may too easily come undone. -

How did the world of nation-states come about? What happened to the world of empires that preceded it? How did the transition take place and how inevitable was it? These may seem (and indeed are) old questions. According to conventional accounts, the transition was inevitable, and originated in the democratic revolutions (American and primarily the French) and the ways in which their ideas spread to the rest of the world. Recent scholarship on transnational and global history has severely criticized these teleological and Euro-and-Western-centric accounts. By enlarging the geographical scope of study, this literature has shown that the process of transition from a world of empires to a world of nation- states was not uniform; nor was it simply the result of the diffusion of some liberal ideas from Western Europe to the rest of the world. Although much of this literature has focused on extra-European developments, historians of Europe have also shown that, although the French revolution and the Napoleonic wars destabilised the continent, they did not just inaugurate a world of nation states. -

RIGAS VELESTINLIS RIGAS AND KORA´S The total lack of reliable biographical information regarding the formative years of Rigas has been compensated by local legend and tradition. He was born in Velestino, Thessaly (1757?), where he received his basic education. His quest for further education took him to Constantinople (1774?) where he was introduced into Phanariot circles. He became a clerk to the noble family of Ypsilantis (1785) and later went to Walla- chia, perhaps having been admitted to Masonic circles. His contact with the Phanariot world, his time spent close to Ka- tartzis, a leading Greek proponent of the Enlightenment, and his knowledge of foreign languages, which enabled him to fol- low European intellectual developments, all served to broaden his horizons. -

The Long Century of the Enlightenment and the Revival of Greek Theater Anna Tabaki Abstract The eighteenth century was “long” because the maturation of the ideals of the Enlightenment in Greek culture was a slow, protracted process. The quest for innovation led to fundamental ruptures with existing traditions, but, at the same time, it turned to the ancient Greek heritage for inspiration. A number of key methodological issues, including the precise nature of the quest for renewal (especially in drama during the Greek Enlightenment), merit closer inspection. Therefore, in this paper I focus on continuity and discontinuity in modern Greek theater and on the major landmarks in its development during the Greek Enlightenment. Theatrical creation is inherently binary because it often starts out as text that is transformed into a staged performance. It requires a dual reception since a play, on the one hand, is usually addressed to a reader, but, on the other, is often written for a performance to be watched by an audience. This dual reception has not always been so obvious or self- evident during the protracted development of modern Greek theater of the Enlightenment. Its fragile structures that, over time, managed to emerge were invariably short-lived. A case in point is theater on the island of Crete. During the Ottoman period, the bulk of the Greek population lived with a relatively sluggish, traditional mindset. The cultural counterweight presented by the Phanariot society was a view of theater as a new genre to be added to the other “modern” literary imports from Western Europe. Thus, for over half a century, the Greek Enlightenment, by showing an interest in innovation, tended to link the notion of drama with arousing the readers’ “literary curiosity.” It is also probably fair to say that drama was a key driving force behind the renewal of narrative traditions, a pre- cursor, so to speak, of the novel (Angelou 1989:37). -

BETWEEN TWO PATRIAE Transnational Patriotism in the Adriatic, 1800-1830 I would like to thank the Modern Greek Program and the Mediterranean Topographies workshop for organizing this lecture. I am very excited to be here! So, let’s begin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ssrYLKyYtg&feature=related For those that do not know, what we have just heard was the national anthem of Greece. It comprises the first two stanzas of the Hymn to Liberty, a poem written by Dionysios Solomos in 1823. The hymn was set to music and officially proclaimed the national anthem of Greece in 1865, that is, 44 years after the outbreak of the Greek Revolution and 35 after Greece’s secession from the Ottoman Empire and its recognition as an independent state. In 1865, Solomos had already been dead for eight years, but his corpse not as much so: in that same year, indeed, his bones were exhumed from the island of Corfu (where death had found him) and transported to the island of Zante (where the poet had been born). Corfu and Zante, two of the seven Ionian Islands, had just been, the year before, united to the Kingdom of Greece. *** This is a picture from another exhumation. We are in a village near London, in 1871. What you see here is the Italian expedition to the grave of Ugo Foscolo, the Zakynthian poet who had died in England some 44 years before. Foscolo’s relics were translated to Italy and posed in the Santa Croce Church of Florence, next to those of Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo and Alfieri.
