A new record for Iran flowerfly fauna, Baccha elongata (Fabricius, 1775) (Diptera: Syrphidae). Munis Entomology & Zoology, 5, suppl.: 900-903] ABSTRACT: Baccha elongata (Fabricius), 1775 is recorded for the first time from Iran. Three specimens were collected from Aynali forests. The related key, diagnosis characters and photos are presented. KEY WORDS: Diptera, Syrphidae, New record, Fauna, Aynali forests, Iran. The genus Baccha was described by Fabricius (1805) with Syrphus elongatus Fabricius, 1775 designated as the type species (Peck, 1988). This genus belonged to Syrphinae subfamily and Bacchini tribe. All species of the subfamily Syrphinae with an entirely blak scutellum are likely to belong to this tribe of four genera. The only exceptions are Paragus which is very distinctive, and some specimens of Melangyna arctica wich is included in the next trible, the Syrphini. There is generally a pattern on the abdomen consisting of pairs of colored spots of grey, yellow or orange (Stubbs and Fulk, 2002). They are, however, easily overlooked because of their frequent habit of hovering low down among vegetation or, even if above vegetation, they are inconspicuous in dappled shade. Baccha is a small genus including two species in palearctic region, B.

  • Species Composition of Coleoptera Families Associated with Live and Dead Wood in a Large Norway Spruce Plantation in Denmark
Species composition of Coleoptera families associated with live and dead wood in a large Norway spruce plantation in Denmark Jens Reddersen & Thomas Secher Jensen Reddersen, J. & T.S. Jensen: Species composition of Coleoptera familites as sociated with live og dead wood in a large Norway spruce plantation in Den mark. Ent. Meddr. 71: 115-128: Copenhagen, Denmark, 2003. ISSN 0013-8851. For decades, the idea of various biotope types hosting unique plant and ani mal species associations and thus forming well-delimited species communities have continuously been debated. At any rate, it remains a practical empirical working concept in intensively exploited mosaic landscapes like in Denmark where biotope fragments are distinctly separated by man-made borders. In Denmark, conifer plantations dominated by Norway spruce, Picea abies L. con stitute such a well-delimited biotope type - at the same time widely distributed and with an insect fauna only poorly known. In two years, 1980-81, in Gludsted Plantation, Central Jutland, the arthro pod fauna was studied in six stands of mature well-tended Norway spruce on poor sandy acidic soils. A variety of sampling methods was employed with a minimum of four white bucket traps and two tray traps on the ground in each stand. In both years in some stands, ground emergence traps were set up as well as vertical series of white buckets in canopies at mean levels 6.6, 10.6 and 13.2 m. Additional sampling comprised vertical sticky trap series in canopies, sweep net sampling in low branches and winter bark search. Ground beetles, sawflies and the aphid-aphidophagous fauna were analysed in previous papers.

  • Flat-Footed Fly Recording Scheme
Flat-footed Fly Recording Scheme Newsletter 4 Spring 2021 Introduction Dead insects as a food source Previous newsletters have reported low numbers of Important new information obtained in 2020 has already platypezid records in all years from 2016 to 2019, while at been reported in a note by Peter Andrews (2021). This the same time including substantial extensions to the ranges concerns observations on the activity of females of of several species and adding new data on a number of rare Agathomyia cinerea , photographed while feeding on dead species. Flat-footed flies have also been noted as sparsely insects. Members of this family are well-known to feed, recorded on Forum field meetings in these years. while running about on leaf surfaces in their characteristic In 2020, due to covid, there were no Forum field meetings, rapid jerky fashion, but it had been thought that their food and field activity by many recorders was constrained and was restricted to surface deposits such as honeydew, pollen grains and microbes. often limited to their own immediate areas. It was not therefore anticipated that many records of flat-footed flies Then Jane Hewitt made a similar observation on 6 would be achieved in the year. However, a steady stream of November, when a female of Agathomyia falleni was seen records has been forwarded to me by a stalwart band of to be feeding on a shrivelled up very small insect that was active fieldworkers, providing some unexpectedly not identifiable. She noticed that it was very keen on feeding interesting results. While more records no doubt remain to from this insect and that it kept returning to it.

Ernobius kadleci sp. nov. (Ernobius nigrinus species-group) from Cyprus is described and compared with similar species. INTRODUCTION In the last year I have described two new Cyprian species from the genus Ernobius C. G. Thomson, 1859, and I gave a key to all six Ernobius species from Cyprus including both new species (Zahradník 2013). Now I treated some other material, where I found a further new Ernobius species from Cyprus. TAXONOMY Ernobius kadleci sp. nov. (Figs. 1-3) Type material. Holotype (♂): Cyprus, Akamas peninsula, 5 km W of Latsi, 1.-10.iv.2000, S. Kadlec lgt., (PZPC). Paratypes (2 ♂♂, 4 ♀♀): the same data as holotype, (PZPC). Description. Male (holotype). Lengthily elongate-elliptical, transversally slightly convex, body length 2.9 mm, the greatest width 1.1 mm. Ratio elytra length : elytra width of 1.8. Yellowish-brown, including antennae, palpi and legs. Head slightly convex, shining with two types of punctures - the first ones very fine and dense, almost touching each other, the second ones umbilicate, coarse and also dense, distance between punctures the same as their diameter.
