    ECONOMICS AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE 2021 ESTIMATES PRE-HEARING QUESTION ON NOTICE No. 1 THE ECONOMICS AND GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION AND MINISTER FOR SPORT (HON S HINCHLIFFE) ― QUESTION: With reference to page 4 of the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport Service Delivery Statements, and the reference to promoting long term growth to the tourism industry, will the Minister provide an update on the Year of Indigenous Tourism? ANSWER: On 19 July 2020, the Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Premier and Minister for Trade, extended the Year of Indigenous Tourism to 2021 due to the impacts of COVID-19. The Palaszczuk Government is investing $10 million over two years for Indigenous tourism development and growth as part of the Year of Indigenous Tourism. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tourism experiences are an iconic part of Queensland’s tourism sector and a strong economic driver, as the sector supported $505 million in visitor expenditure and employed nearly 2500 people on a full-time basis before the COVID-19 pandemic. Key initiatives of the Year of Indigenous Tourism include: • $7 million Growing Indigenous Tourism in Queensland Fund • Our Country Tourism Business Development Service • Advance Queensland One Business program, for Indigenous business innovators and entrepreneurs • Indigenous experience, marketing, festivals and events • The scoping of the potential to establish a peak Indigenous tourism body. Under the Growing Indigenous Tourism in Queensland Fund, 24 businesses received funding of up to $25 000 to develop business concepts and feasibility studies for new growth of Indigenous tourism product or experiences, while nine businesses received funding of up to $1 million to deliver a new tourism attraction, experience or built infrastructure.

I nearly always think about him when the Bulldogs are set to take on Parramatta. There isn’t a year goes I by when I don’t have at least one conversation about this player who, on one fateful September day in 1998, saw his career come to an end. He set a new benchmark for horrid individual performances on a rugby league fi eld. Now, to give Carige’s performance context, it is important to understand the simmering hatred between Canterbury and Parramatta at the time. The Bulldogs and Eels were wild rivals in the 1980s but that was an enmity built out of style and the pursuit of superiority rather than any underlying natural disposition of dislike between the two outfi ts. These days, the rivalry remains strong but it is a very one-sided deal with little respect given to the Eels by the Bulldogs faithful. But, in the 1990s, the feud was hot – the hottest feud in the game.

    QRL History ….pt. VI (The 1930s & the district concept) by Mike Higgison A MAJOR shift in the game's focus occurred in 1933 when the BRL introduced its "district concept", where players had to reside within set areas to remain eligible to play for a particular club. The motion had been defeated by club delegates a year earlier following years of debate about the idea. A major focus of district football was providing a definitive identity to everyone associated with the individual clubs and their supporters, while also attempting to arrest clubs’ competition dominance which had been an issue previously. Thus, a number of clubs were forced to change their names in order to reflect the district they represented, which was basically designed on electoral boundaries. Under the new seven-team competition, Carltons became Southern Suburbs, Coorparoo and the Wynnum district competition combined to form Eastern Suburbs, Past Grammars became Northern Suburbs, while Western Suburbs, Fortitude Valley, University and Past Christian Brothers all remained. With the new restrictions on players, it is needless to say that Brothers, and lesser University, were disliked by the other five clubs over their unique restrictions. The BRL edict stated that Past Brothers would be allowed to draw upon players from Catholic schools throughout Brisbane without any residential qualifications, while University would have access to all tertiary institutions in Brisbane. It was perceived by clubs that the demographics of the average "catholic family", were much higher than regular rugby league "types", and as such they had an advantage drawing on private school “Old Boys”. This discontent towards Brothers lasted until district football was finally phased out in 1968.

If it is the same as our last meeting, access to the Bistro is via the entrance off the outside courtyard up the steps beside the Whistle Stop bar. This entrance is one level above the entry level to the train station. Tentative days for our future Brisbane meetings in 2021 are 3rd September and 19th November, so please reserve them as Claimer Dates. Two meetings will again be held this year at the Headland Golf Club Buderim, with the first one planned for Friday 9th July 2019 and the second on later in the year on a date to be confirmed.
