Midyear Report Canada 2020
NIELSEN MUSIC / MRC DATA MIDYEAR REPORT CANADA 2020 1 Introduction HAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW MONTHS MAKE. IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WASN’T even six months ago that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez performed for a tightly packed crowd of more than 60,000 people in Miami at the Super Bowl, while Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas picked up five Grammys at what turned out to be 2020’s last major music business gathering since COVID-19 halted live events. WBy Friday, March 13, the NBA and NHL had suspended play, the NCAA had canceled its spring tournaments, and theaters and live music venues had closed. As “safer at home” orders spread throughout the country, our homes became our offices, our schools, our daycares and our social hubs. Quickly and dramatically, life had changed. Our routines were disrupted, and we struggled to find balance. Still, the music industry was experiencing a strong start to the year. Audio streaming was growing through early March, up 20.9% over the same period in 2019. Total music consumption was up 10.8% in the first 10 weeks of the year. As working from home became a reality for many, some of the key music listening hours, such as during commutes, were disrupted. But one thing that has remained consistent as the pandemic has unfolded is entertainment’s place in helping consumers escape, relax and feel energized. In fact, in our recent consumer research studies, 73% of people said they would go crazy without entertainment during this time. Then, just as many communities began to slowly reopen, the country was shaken by the senseless May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. -

Meredith C. Ward the Sounds of Lockdown
Meredith C. Ward Senior Lecturer, Director of the Film and Media Studies Program The Johns Hopkins University The sounds of lockdown Virtual connection, online listening, and the emotional weight of COVID-19 www.soundeffects.dk SoundEffects | vol. 10 | no. 1 | 2021 issn 1904-500X Ward: The sounds of lockdown SoundEffects | vol. 10 | no. 1 | 2021 Abstract Modes of listening tell us a great deal about how Americans are coping with the feelings of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking online listening culture in which amateur music remixers repur- pose known pop songs to produce an effect of loneliness in virtual public spaces, this essay traces the movement of online sound subcultures from late 2010s YouTube into the modes of listening, employed by a much larger viewership on lockdown during the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020. Analyzing the act of listening to empty public spaces online since the inception of a particular family of memes that ran from 2017-2018, the essay showcases how that music sub- culture prefi gured a wider response to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Covering the psy- chological response to pandemic, its manifestations in phenomena, such as grief over the loss of public space as mediated by EarthCam, #StayHomeSounds, and the quieting of neighbor- hoods and cities, this essay shows how the range of modes in our listening network is evolving at this time. It also responds to how the social and emotional needs that arise during lockdown are met in forms of virtuality we have crafted to connect us to the wider world. Moreover, it emphasizes that virtuality crept into our connection with public space earlier than the pan- demic – and that playing with the notion of nostalgia recreationally through online media before the pandemic made us better equipped to handle the pandemic’s isolation, when it came. -
Dear Facilitator
Dear facilitator, Welcome back to Drillosophy: a new educational video series combining contemporary music culture with social science to help young people think more critically about their world. It aims to be fun, authentic and — most importantly — transformative for its audience. Drillosophy has been borne-out of two things. First is an urgent recognition that COVID-19 and the lockdown of Spring/Summer 2020 has placed a growing strain on educators’ ability to teach, connect with and care for teenagers stuck at home. This is especially true for professionals working with young people from low-income or cramped households, those who do not have access to a laptop, and those who are already disillusioned with, or feel excluded from, school life. Second is our broader, long-term motivation to leverage cutting-edge digital technology, a deep-rooted understanding of youth culture and applied social science to affect change in the British education system. Drillosophy resources are neither exhaustive or the finished product. But we hope they will empower you to have a meaningful, co-investigative dialogue with young people — during this difficult time, and beyond. We are aware that, at present, episodes, resources and their references are male-dominated. We are actively trying to catch and hold the attention of the hardest-to-reach boys and young men for legitimate reasons (e.g. their disproportionate rates of exclusion from school and incarceration). But we are working on making our work more gender-inclusive. Please watch this space. Contact us on [email protected] if you have any questions, feedback or means of supporting us. -

Music Streaming Drives Success for Rap, Reggaeton Artists Dominating U.S
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DIGITAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION DECEMBER 30, 2020 CONTACT: Garrett Levin [email protected] Music Streaming Drives Success for Rap, Reggaeton Artists Dominating U.S. Streaming Platforms’ End-of-Year “Top 2020” Lists Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, Bad Bunny, and Megan Thee Stallion Among Artists Who Dominated 2020 As Streaming Drives Music Industry Forward WASHINGTON, D.C. — Breakout rap and reggaeton artists cemented their place at the top of the streaming music charts in 2020 and continue to dominate year-end “most streamed” and “best of 2020” lists, according to a new analysis by the Digital Media Association. The review of year-end data and charts from DiMA’s member companies – Amazon, Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube – found that artists Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, Bad Bunny, and Megan Thee Stallion were among those with the highest numbers amid the streaming revolution in the music industry. Notably, all four artists have rapidly reached mainstream fame within the past three years. Additional findings from the review of the year-end lists of DiMA member organizations include: • Music fans continued their full-throated embrace of streaming in 2020, connecting with top artists such as BTS, Drake, J Balvin, and Cardi B across a range of platforms as streaming allowed consumers to access and engage with the music they love despite social distancing guidelines. • In a continuing trend since 2019, major rap and reggaeton artists benefit from streaming platforms’ ability to expand their reach across genres and connect with a broader range of fans who are discovering their songs via increasingly curated playlist and discovery features. -
