Modernist Poetics between France and Brazil: Influence and Cannibalism in the Works of Blaise Cendrars and Oswald de Andrade Sarah Lazur Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 1 © 2019 Sarah Lazur All rights reserved 2 ABSTRACT Modernist Poetics between France and Brazil: Influence and Cannibalism in the Works of Blaise Cendrars and Oswald de Andrade Sarah Lazur This dissertation examines the collegial and collaborative relationship between the Swiss-French writer Blaise Cendrars and the Brazilian writer Oswald de Andrade in the 1920s as an exemplar of shifting literary influence in the international modernist moment and examines how each writer’s later accounts of the modernist period diminished the other’s influential role, in revisionist histories that shaped later scholarship. In analyzing a broad range of source texts, published poems, fiction and essays as well as personal correspondence and preparatory materials, I identify several areas of likely mutual influence or literary cannibalism that defied contemporaneous expectations for literary production from European cultural capitals or from the global south. Museo Picasso Málaga
TOYS OF THE AVANT-GARDE 4th October, 2010 – 30th January, 2011 . Toys of the Avant-garde at Museo Picasso Málaga will illustrate the way in which early 20th-century artists and writers became interested in familiarizing children with the shapes and ideas of modern art, and in projecting their own ideals for the future upon them. Crucial artists such as Pablo Picasso, Giacomo Balla, Alexander Calder, Fortunato Depero, Alexandra Exter, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, Joan Miró, Alexander Rodchenko, Oskar Schlemmer, Edward Steichen, Sophie Taeuber- Arp and Joaquín Torres-García are just some of the many artists whose work can be seen at the exhibition, and who include writers such as Vladimir Maiakovski and Ramón Gómez de la Serna. They are all represented in an outstanding collection of around six hundred games, puppets, dolls, toy furniture, books and artworks . Curated by Carlos Pérez and José Lebrero Stals, artistic director of MPM, Toys of the Avant-garde examines the hitherto little-explored relationship between art and teaching, in the numerous projects for children that appeared in Europe during this revolutionary period. Nowadays, they are seen as major examples of some of the artistic and literary trends that were to set the course for art and design today The first quarter of the 20th century saw the birth of a series of political and social ideas whose purpose was to break away from previous formulas and set up new forms of government. Communism, Fascism, and the democracies that arose following the decline of the old Central-European empires attracted groups of artists who eagerly hoped that their aesthetic proposals would be transferred to society and permeate everyday life, thus contributing to the advent of a new lifestyle. -

Federal Department of Home Affairs FDHA Swiss Federal Office of Culture FOC Swiss National Library NL Marie-Christine Doffey, May 2010 ANNUAL REPORT TO CENL 2009-2010 SNL Mission statement The Swiss National Library is responsible for collecting and making available to the public, now and in the future, Helvetica i.e. documents (in all formats, printed or digital) published in Switzerland or pro- duced elsewhere by Swiss authors or concerning Switzerland / Swiss people. 1. Mandate Since January 1st 2006, the NL has had the status of a new public management entity and is run according to a performance mandate and global budget (MPM). Within this, it retains its dual mandate: collecting documents and preserving for the future; but also making them available to the public. This is reflected in the two product groups of the NL: collections and user services. In contrast with other national libraries, part of the NL’s mandate is to allow users to borrow material for home use (with some restrictions). The goals set for 2009 were successfully achieved, and those for 2010 validated by the federal Office for Cul- ture. The accent in 2010 is on continuing the digitization of the general collections, on converting the remaining card catalogues and beginning the digitization of the iconographic collections. During 2010, the strategy 2012-2019 will be finalized. The next performance mandate period will run from 2009-2011 with the following major goals: Online access in all forms will be expanded; the remaining card catalogues will be converted into online catalogues; the backlog in digitising will be gradually reduced, while the electronic Helvetica Collection will be built up, and a general access point to all digital documents developed. -
