The classic misogynist account of Blake's attitude to women ap­ pears in Bernard Blackstone's chapter, 'Desire, Love and Marriage', in his English Blake (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1949), pp.288-99. 35. It is extraordinary that Mary Lynn Johnson (herself a noteworthy omission from the list) should acknowledge of the Blake Industry that, 'No art historian, British or commonwealth subject, neoclas­ sicist or feminist scholar of any gender or discipline - sits on the board of directors', whilst also claiming, 'the clan is representa­ tive enough to air the main agenda of Blakists within the whole of academia', in The English Romantic Poets, p. 250. See too her defence of the 'Blake Industry', pp. 148-9. 36. Comments of this nature appear in the contributions of David Erdman, p. 394 and Karl Kroeber, p. 428. Only W.J.T. Mitchell's, 'Dangerous Blake' deals at length with questions of sexuality, pp. 410-16 - especially in his section on 'Obscenity', pp. 413-14.

He spent a year at the University of Edinburgh, and then a year in California on a Fulbright Scholarship teaching in the Department of Art at UCLA and studying the Stowe Papers at the Huntington Library. From 1961-64 he practised as an architect in the Edinburgh office of Sir Robert Matthew, working on the development plan for Queen’s College, Dundee, the competition for St Paul’s Choir School in London, and other projects. In 1964-65 he held a Junior Fellowship in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, DC, returning to England to Newcastle University in 1965, where he was successively Lecturer in Architecture and Reader in the History of Architecture.

    FAIR SHARES FOR ALL JACOBIN EGALITARIANISM IN PRACT ICE JEAN-PIERRE GROSS This study explores the egalitarian policies pursued in the provinces during the radical phase of the French Revolution, but moves away from the habit of looking at such issues in terms of the Terror alone. It challenges revisionist readings of Jacobinism that dwell on its totalitarian potential or portray it as dangerously Utopian. The mainstream Jacobin agenda held out the promise of 'fair shares' and equal opportunities for all in a private-ownership market economy. It sought to achieve social justice without jeopardising human rights and tended thus to complement, rather than undermine, the liberal, individualist programme of the Revolution. The book stresses the relevance of the 'Enlightenment legacy', the close affinities between Girondins and Montagnards, the key role played by many lesser-known figures and the moral ascendancy of Robespierre. It reassesses the basic social and economic issues at stake in the Revolution, which cannot be adequately understood solely in terms of political discourse.     Bibliographical essay The following bibliographical essay is a far more comprehensive listing of scholarship on early modern violence than was possible in the print version of Violence in Early Modern Europe. Space constraints confined the published bibliography to a limited number of works, almost all of them in English. This listing presents scholarship – in English and a number of other European languages – that is pertinent to the historical study of vio- lence. Introduction As we saw in the text of this chapter, historians and sociologists have long sought the causes of behavioral changes among early modern Europeans. Max Weber was a pioneer in this search, as he was in so much else in modern social thought. He warned of the disciplining process imposed on individuals by the growing power of the modern state as well as by the power of other institutions such as the army and by growing modern industries. The result, he alleged, would be an “iron cage” for the individ- ual, a phrase he used in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, trans. by Talcott Parsons (London: Allen and Unwin, 1948). Scholars who followed in Weber’s footsteps concurred with his asser- tion that a process of social discipline resulted from new power dynamics emerging in the early modern period. This was certainly the message of the philosopher Michel Foucault in his works Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason, trans. by Richard Howard (New York: Pantheon Books, 1965); The Birth of the Clinic: An Archaeology of Medical Perception, trans.

    ‘I mourn for them I loved’: The Material Culture of Love and Loss in Eighteenth-Century England Jennifer A. Jorm Bachelor of Arts (History) Honours Class 1 A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry i Abstract This thesis analyses the material culture of love and loss in eighteenth-century England through the lens of emotions. My study builds on scholarly works on material culture, emotions, death, love, and loss. It examines objects used to declare love, to express grief, and to say farewell. Chapter One introduces the historiography of this topic, outlines the methodology used, and problematises the issues and questions surrounding the relationship between individuals and objects during this period, such as the eighteenth century “consumer revolution,” and the rise of sentimentalism. This chapter also introduces what I term the “emotional economy,” or the value placed on an object based on emotional signficance regardless of its intrinsic value. Chapter Two explores love tokens and the role they played in not only the expression of romantic love, but the making and breaking of courtships and marriages. This chapter concludes that the exchange of tokens was vital to the expression of love, and was an expected emotional behaviour to progress a courtship into a marriage. Chapter Three explores the material culture of death, focusing on tokens created and distributed for the comforting of mourners, and the commemoration of the dead. It’s findings confirmed that mourners valued tokens and jewellery, particularly those made with hair belonging to the deceased in order to maintain a physical connection to their loved ones after their passing.

    Sex, Spirits, and Sensibility: Human Generation in British Medicine, Anatomy, and Literature, 1660-1780 Darren Neil Wagner PhD The University of York Department of History September 2013 Abstract This thesis explores the physiological idea of animal spirits in relation to nerves, sex, and reproduction in the culture of sensibility. That physiology held the sex organs of both females and males to be exceptionally sensitive parts of the body that profoundly affected individuals’ constitutions and minds. Sexual sensations, desires, volition, and behaviour depended upon animal spirits and nerves. A central concern in this perception of the body and mind was the conflict between rationality from the intellectual will and sexual feelings from the genitalia. The idea that the body and mind interacted through animal spirits became influential in Georgian culture through anatomical and medical writings, teachings, and visual displays, but also through its resonance in literature about sensibility. This research predominantly draws upon material and print cultures of medicine, anatomy, and literature from 1660-1780. The analysis highlights the roles of gender, markets, literary modes, scientific practices, visual demonstrations, medical vocations, and broader social and political discourses in conceptions of the body and mind in relation to sex and reproduction. Ultimately, this study fleshes out the sensible and sexual body, which cultural and literary historians have frequently referred to, and emphasizes how the organs of generation commanded
