Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century. -
Post-Postfeminism?: New Feminist Visibilities in Postfeminist Times
FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________Anuario IEHS 28 (2013), pp. 157-175 MUJERES, ANTIFASCISMO Y DEMOCRACIA: LA JUNTA DE LA VICTORIA, 1941-19471 Sandra McGee Deutsch 2 Resumen La Junta de la Victoria era una organización antifascista femenina que promovió la democracia y mandó ayuda a los Aliados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Apoyada por el Partido Comunista, se convirtió en el más grande grupo político de mujeres antes de la presidencia de Juan Perón (1946-1955). Movilizó a miles de mujeres de diferentes clases, etnias, religiones, perspectivas políticas, y regiones. A través de la elaboración de ropa y otras actividades concretas, y el uso de símbolos como la V de la Victoria, la Junta difundió el antifascismo y lo hizo atractivo a un gran número de personas. La contribución específica de la Junta a la lucha contra el fascismo fue su intento por democratizar el sistema político mediante la incorporación de diversas mujeres, así como también modelando las prácticas cívicas igualitarias, y popularizando su mensaje. Abstract The Junta de la Victoria (1941-1947) was a female antifascist organization that promoted democracy and sent aid to the Allies during World War II. Supported by the Communist Party, it became the largest women’s political group before Juan Perón’s presidency (1946-1955). It mobilized thousands of women of different classes, ethnicities, religions, political perspectives, and regions. Through the making of clothing and other concrete activities, and the use of symbols such as the V for victory, the Junta spread antifascism and made it attractive to a huge number of persons. -
A Feminist Critique of Knowledge Production
This volume is the result of the close collaboration between the University of Naples “L‘Orientale” and the scholars organizing and participating to the postgraduate course Feminisms in a Transnational Perspective in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It features 15 essays that envision a feminist critique of the production Università degli studi di Napoli of knowledge that contributes today, intentionally or not, to new “L’Orientale” forms of discrimination, hierarchy control, and exclusion. Opposing the skepticism towards the viability of Humanities and Social Sciences in the era of ‘banking education’, marketability, and the so-called technological rationalization, these essays inquiry into teaching practices of non- institutional education and activism. They practice methodological ‘diversions’ of feminist intervention A feminist critique into Black studies, Childhood studies, Heritage studies, Visual studies, and studies of Literature. of knowledge production They venture into different research possibilities such as queering Eurocentric archives and histories. 1 TODAY, YESTERDAY & TOMORROW: between rebellion and coalition building Lynne Segal Times change, and with them accounts of what is more likely to be seen as politically achievable, or perhaps ridiculous. There is near consensus that Britain at present is facing an ever-deepening recession, with economists such as Will Hutton disclosing that the UK is suffering the worst economic performance since the nineteenth century, while its recovery from the height of the banking crisis has been amongst the slowest in the world. Even the IMF warns that the extent of government’s spending cuts and refusal to invest in the public sector is forestalling growth and risking permanent damage to the economy.1 Moreover, there is widespread awareness of the distressing effects of public sector cuts on the most vulnerable people in the UK, with women hit hardest by job cuts in the welfare system, and half a million people marching against the cuts in March 2011. Yet in the UK there is nowadays less political cohesion, hope, or anything like an agreed alternative vision between the different forms of resistance to this Tory-led coalition than there was when Margaret Thatcher was elected at the close of the 1970s. With the ethos of market forces so comprehensively triumphant over the last thirty years, fear eats the soul of the British left. Even the once widely approved word, ‘socialism’, to describe the goal of the radically egalitarian, democratic society many of us hoped to build back in the 1970s, has largely fallen into disuse. Back 2 then, it was the Women’s Liberation Movement that exerted the strongest influence on my life, and feminism generally has ever since remained a part of every political move I make. -

INCLUSIVE STORIES Although scholars of LGBTQ history have generally been inclusive of women, the working classes, and gender-nonconforming people, the narrative that is found in mainstream media and that many people think of when they think of LGBTQ history is overwhelmingly white, middle-class, male, and has been focused on urban communities. While these are important histories, they do not present a full picture of LGBTQ history. To include other communities, we asked the authors to look beyond the more well-known stories. Inclusion within each chapter, however, isn’t enough to describe the geographic, economic, legal, and other cultural factors that shaped these diverse histories. Therefore, we commissioned chapters providing broad historical contexts for two spirit, transgender, Latino/a, African American Pacific Islander, and bisexual communities. -
