Polish literature towards the Confinement Centre in Bereza Kartuska. 1934–1939 … the camp has a beautiful traditional Polish name: “Seclusion spot” (almost like: “Temple of Meditation”).1 M.O., i.e. miejsce odosobnienia (confinement centre), generally termed by people as the slaughter house of citizens2. Emulating the one in Dachau, Poles built their own, in Bereza3. The Confinement Centre in Bereza Kartuska On 18 June 1934 Maria Dąbrowska wrote in her diary: “Brr – Now we have isola- tion camps – Soon, you won’t be able to speak, write, or live!”4 That was her reac- tion to a Resolution by Ignacy Mościcki, President of the Republic of Poland, of 17 June 1934 on persons threatening the security, peace, and public order. But an equally good pretext, as it is difficult to grade it, is what the organisers of the Festival wrote in the programme. Let me quote: “Our tour guide in the lite- rary journey from the North to the South is Zbigniew Herbert, whose year proclaimed by the Sejm RP we are currently celebrating”. It is worth remem- bering this fact, especially that the Herbert Year [2018] is inevitably drawing to an end. I thought that it would be worth discussing several important issues connected with the journeys of Zbigniew Herbert to the South, using the opportunity that we have such eminent guests here. And I would like to begin chronologically. We can say, obvious as it may seem, that before Herbert headed for the South in the physical sense, he had set out there, in fact, much earlier in a symbolic way. Naturally, I am referring to his first poetic volume, titled Struna światła (A Chord of Light) from 1956. This is why I want to ask you what South meant to Herbert when he made his debut as a poet? I mean the South from the poems Do Apollina (To Apollo) and Do Ateny (To Athena) or from the poem about Daedalus and Icarus. -

Vroon, Chair What is the role of sociocultural history in the evolution of national identity? How is the worldview of Russian citizens reflected in contemporary art and popular culture? My dissertation, which examines narratives of national identity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, approaches these questions and others through an historical analysis of Russian fantastika film adaptations and the literary works upon which they are based. Illustrating transitions in perceptions of Russian identity as they are reflected in over thirty examples of Soviet and post-Soviet fantastika, this project provides a critical reconsideration of historical theories on the “Russian idea” and offers new perspectives on what it means to be Russian in the twenty-first century. -

The primary hypothesis is that it is possible, through an historical ii analysis of fantastika film adaptations (and their corresponding literary sources), to obtain a fundamental understanding of post-Soviet culture by examining crucial transformations in the Russian worldview over the course of a century; namely, from 1917 to 2017. -

Growing Up Soviet in the Periphery: Imagining, Experiencing and Remembering Childhood in Kazakhstan, 1928-1953 by Mehmet Volkan Kaşıkçı A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved October 2020 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Laurie Manchester, Chair Agnes Kefeli Adrienne Edgar Anna Holian ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation discusses children and childhood in Soviet Kazakhstan from 1928 to 1953. By exploring images of, and for, children, and by focusing on children’s fates during and after the famine of 1930-33, I argue that the regime’s success in making children socialist subjects and creating the new Soviet person was questionable throughout the 1930s. The reach of Soviet ideological and cultural policies was limited in a decade defined by all kinds of shortcomings in the periphery which was accompanied by massive violence and destruction. World War 2 mobilized Central Asians and integrated the masses into the Soviet social and political body. The war transformed state- society relations and the meaning of being Soviet fundamentally changed. In this way, larger segments of society embraced the framework for Soviet citizenship and Soviet patriotism largely thanks to the war experience. This approach invites us to reconsider the nature of Sovietization in Central Asia by questioning the central role of ideology and cultural revolution in the formation of Soviet identities. My dissertation brings together images of childhood, everyday experiences of children and memory of childhood. On the one hand, the focus on children provides me an opportunity to discuss Sovietization in Central Asia. -

THE BATTLES OF KHALKHIN-GOL DATE: MAY 11 – SEPTEMBER 16 1939 Belligerents Soviet Union Japan Mongolia Manchukuo The village of Nomonhan sat near the border in an area disputed between Mongolia, a territory of China which had broken away with Soviet support but not yet internationally recognized, and Manchukuo, which was a Japanese puppet state in northeastern China. The Japanese considered the river Khalkhin Gol the border between the two territories, while the Mongolians thought the border was 16 kilometers further east, just past Nomonhan. On 11 May 1939, a Mongolian cavalry unit consisting of 70 to 90 men neared Nomonhan in search of grazing land for their horses, and was driven west of Khalkhin Gol by Manchukuo cavalry. Two days later, the enraged Mongolians returned with a sizeable force and occupied the Nomonhan region. The aggressive Japanese Kwantung Army took this incident as an excuse to move into the Russian sphere of influence, and dispatched Colonel Takemitsu Yamagata and Lieutenant Colonel Yaozo Azuma into Mongolia on 14 May with two regiments from the Japanese 23rd Division. They were able to drive the Mongolian forces back across the river. Shortly after, Mongolian troops returned, and Azuma returned with his troops again, but this time, the Japanese were surrounded by Soviet and Mongolian forces. On 28 May the Japanese troops were wiped out; the Japanese lost 8 officers and 97 men killed and 1 officer and 33 men wounded, a 63% casualty rate. Immediately after this engagement, both sides built up strength in the area. The Japanese moved 30,000 men toward the Mongolian Area, while Moscow dispatched corps commander Lieutenant General Georgy Zhukov to lead an offensive. -

Two characters who were in the Imperial Japanese Army during the war, relate their experiences in the Mongolian border area at a much later date to the protagonist, which seems to profoundly affect his later adventures. In comparison, at the point of contact, the Kwantung Army had only General Komatsubara's 23rd Infantry Division, which with various attached forces was equivalent to two light-infantry divisions. Very interesting and I do believe his conclusion of the importance of this battle on the alliances and outbreak of WWII. The Soviet Union and Japan agreed to a cease-fire on 15 September, which took effect the following day at pm. The Diplomat.
