E-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION The 2014 BMIG field weekend, held from 24th to 27th April, was based at Saughy Rigg, half a mile north of Hadrian’s Wall, near Haltwhistle in Northumberland but very close to the border with Cumbria to the west and Scotland to the north. The main aim of the meeting was to record in central areas of northern England (VC 66, 67 and 70) where few records existed previously but many attendees were drawn also to sites on the east coast of England (VC 66) and to the Scottish coast on the Solway Firth (VC 73). All these vice counties had been visited by BMG/BISG or BMIG in the previous twenty years but large parts of them remained under-recorded. The annual joint field meeting of BMG and BISG in 1995 was held at Rowrah Hall near Whitehaven (VC 70). Gregory (1995) reports 24 millipede species found during the weekend including Choneiulus palmatus new to VC 70. A list of the centipede appears not to have been published. Bilton (1995) reports 14 woodlouse species including Eluma caelata found at Maryport, its most northerly global location, and Armadillidium pictum in the Borrowdale oakwoods. -

The new species is distinguished by the evident apico- dorsal trichostele on the last tibia of both sexes and the gonopodal telopodite being particularly complex, quadripartite, consisting of the longest, mesal, suberect solenomere branch; a slightly shorter, similarly slender, acuminate endomere branch tightly appressed to the solenomere; a somewhat shorter, caudal, strongly curved, armed exomere process; and a very distinct, low, lateral, sac-shaped velum at their base. -

Microhabitats representing the main body of uniform litter were compared with more localised microhabitats including dead wood and areas of wet soil. Species accumulation curves suggest that for this site it is more efficient to sample from varied microhabitats of limited spatial scale rather than the broad habitat areas when generating a species inventory. For comparative work sampling the main body of uniform litter is more appropriate, given that microhabitats vary from woodland to woodland and would make standardisation problematic. Vegetation showed more distinctive microhabitat-specific species assemblages than soil and leaf litter invertebrates and was strongly associated with environmental variables. Microhabitats with distinct assemblages included dead wood habitats, which had a high proportion of saproxylic species; a highly disturbed microhabitat with distinct plant and soil species characteristic of ruderal habitats and seeps with earthworm species rarely sampled in standard soil biodiversity surveys. -

C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum. -

Though with us there are insects somewhat resembling them in form, we are placed at a happy distance from such as are really formidable. With us they seldom grow above an inch long; in the tropical climates they are often found above a quarter of a yard”. Thus were the 'scolopendra' and 'gaily worm’ introduced by Oliver Goldsmith in 1864 in his ‘History of the earth and animated nature, Book 1: Insects of the first order’. Clearly a man of the ‘creepy-crawly’ school of taxonomic description! More recently millipedes and woodlice have been described as “fascinating and, dare I say it, endearing creatures" (Hopkin & Read 1992; Hopkin 1991) and “very interesting animals ... eminently accessible and obliging ... very useful" {Sutton 1972). It has to be said that the animals referred to in this publication do indeed creep, crawl and generally behave in a manner inconsistent with furred and feathered vertebrates. The majority do not possess irridescent courtship embellishments, nor do they display humorous anthropomorphic behaviour. -
