It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop AB Mailorder Catalog Here we go. Tonight is May 8. It is 10 pm. Sixteen blank pages are before me and I’m hitting the road on June 1. I work at the shoe store five days next week, I have exactly one day to get this bastard nailed to the wall... Everything has to click just right for me to get this catalog written, printed, mailed, delivered, and for you to get your checks in the mail and back to Corvallis before I leave town. It’s gonna create a very insane mailorder tsunami—it should be fun! I’ll do my part and get this to you by the 20th at the very latest. Please remember: you’ve gotta get your bix to me by May 30, if you wanna see your stuff fast rather than in early July... That means your envelope has to be in Corvallis by May 30. Hike! Okay, new release... First one out the gate is MP-515 THE PROMS Helpless Romatic. This one released on May 6, 1999 and the initial reac- tion to the album has been very, very positive. That sort of response from pop-punk fans is kinda a “no duh” to me, I knew this album kicked ass from the first time I heard the tape. It is gratifying to hear nice words none- theless. It’s quite a tremendous album when you get right down to it: awe- some songwriting, huge RAMONESy guitar riffs, and delightful deep har- monies akin to a very fine barbershop quartet.

  • Amy Gore and Her Valentines Have It in Spades
Over the years, the Detroit music scene has produced a dizzying array of incredible bands in every genre from classic R&B and soul to the MC5 and the Stooges. The current generation has internalized an incredible amount of musical goodness as they develop as artists; musical acuity seems to be part of the gene pool. But chops and taste will only get a band so far in a crowded field of mediocrity. The standouts have that intangible magnetism that can’t be faked - Amy Gore and Her Valentines have it in spades. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Amy Gore has been the heart and soul of bands like Gore Gore Girls and Gorevette, producing critically acclaimed albums and performing with icons like The Cramps and Blondie. In early 2011, she’d written a batch of new songs and booked a one-off show at Detroit’s Blow Out festival to perform them. Originally named Amy Gore and the Squires, Gore assembled Jackson Smith (T-Bone Burnett’s Speaking Clock Revue, Electric Six) on guitar, Leann Banks (the Von Bondies) on bass and Joe Leone (Grayling, Fletcher Pratt) hitting the skins. It became obvious on stage that the band’s chemistry was too potent to walk away from. "We had no expectations beyond that first show, but the chemistry on stage was instant and powerful. It was as if everyone in the room knew something special was happening. Afterwards, Jackson called me to say they wanted to continue as a real band, he and Joe were really impressed with my songs and the vibe on stage.

This is MutantMutant PopPop free! Mailorder Catalog AH free! http://members.aol.com/mutantpop/ Hey, we rolled the odometer! Hooray for all of us! If I didn’t use the occasion to tweak the typography a little bit, i wouldn’t be doing my job. Thanks to Jeff Wison for the outstanding New Release Info dancing kids drawing, originally created for the the Pizzafest T-shirts. That cat can draw... As you can recall from MP Days of Yore, Pizzafest was gonna be a big show and pizzafeed with participants getting a free shirt, but the venue got paranoid about security, costs escalated, band avail- abilities got shaky, and the event was cancelled. Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest. There are rumors of a possible Connie Dungs/Dirt Bike Annie mini-tour this summer, how great would it be to tie into that? It’s something for you The 40th Mutant Pop 7”er is now on the street! people in pop-punk bands to think about—make your own fun! MP-39 THE BEAUTYS “A#1 Sex Shop Em- ployee” EP finally made it to my doorstep from Bill Smith Custom Records in LA on January 4.

  • MUTANT POP Big Catalog
It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop Y Mailorder Catalog Hi again! Don’t forget to bookmark the web page: http://members.aol.com/mutantpop/index.html This month’s dose of joy is MP-30 VARIOUS ARTISTS “No Band Photo, Vol.1.” Yes, you read that right, no leather jacket boys on the sleeve, just a cool cartoon by Jeff Wilson, author of Sap. It looks swell and you get four little band photos inside along with my typical yeoman’s output of typos, so dry your little traditionalist eyes. Four bands for five bucks on two slabs of wonderful blue wax. THE FRATELLI’S are on side F, this is their first release ever. They’re four guys from Michigan and they deliver two uptempo, peppy, happy sounding cuts. “Nobody Likes Me Again” is the hit, an anthem for unpopular kids everywhere. THE FRATELLI’S fit into the puzzle next to bands like CARTER PEACE MISSION and THE KLOPECS, combining buzzing guitars and a warm, fuzzy ambiance with enough guitar grit to slide into the pages of Maximum Rocknroll. An excellent pop-punk band, I hope this is just the first of a series of FRATELLI’S stuff. Backing side F is side S. The big S stands for SPODIE and you certainly must know them by now. Their self-released “Pop Punk-a-Go Go” EP blows the doors off, their new split EP with PINCUSHION adds to their growing legacy. SPODIE is definitely the hardest of the four bands involved in this project, chas- ing it with two true-to-life relationship songs.
