America’s Urban Crisis a Decade After the Los Angeles Riots Peter Dreier The tenth anniversary of the April 1992 riots in Los Angeles—which left fifty- five people dead and caused more than $1 billion in property damage,the most costly in the nation’s history—sparked a small industry of reports and assessments by think tanks and the news media. During the week before the anniversary,reporters from almost every major newspaper were swarm- ing around Los Angeles,preparing their predictable ten-years-later stories. They asked the expected questions: Why did it happen? Has any progress been made? And as the British paper The Guardian headlined its story,Could it happen again?1 The Los Angeles Times published a weeklong series of front-page articles reviewing the day the riots erupted, assessing contemporary conditions in the riot corridor, and examining the current state of race relations in America’s most racially diverse city. Reporters interviewed academic experts, community activists, ordinary residents, business leaders, and others; and the paper spon- sored a public opinion poll to probe how Angelenos now felt about their city. But the paper’s most telling story was buried on page 20 on the day of the anniversary,April 29. The headline was “Tax Cut Clouds Bush’s Urban Agenda.” Bush came to Los Angeles that day to speak at a church-sponsored community development center at the 1992 riot’s epicenter,South Los Angeles—an area with almost 700,000 residents, bigger than most cities. Reporters might have expected him to announce a new initiative to address the nation’s serious urban problems,but instead he simply touted his most visible urban program— encouraging urban churches to sponsor social programs such as homeless shel- ters,food kitchens,and drug counseling. -

Transnational Sports and Identities in Southern California and Mexico, 1930–1945
Playing Across Borders: Transnational Sports and Identities in Southern California and Mexico, 1930–1945 JOSÉ M. ALAMILLO The author is a member of the Chicana/o studies program at California State University, Channel Islands. This article examines the local and transnational dimensions of sports in Southern California through the activities of the Mexican Athletic Association of South- ern California (MAASC) from the Great Depression to the end of World War II. This amateur athletic organization promoted sports in the barrios and colonias throughout Southern California and forged transnational ties with the Mexican government and its sports federation. MAASC and its related activities reflected two competing historical trajectories that have been subjects of debate in Chicano historiography. MAASC sports simultaneously reinvigorated transnational ties with Mexico that emphasized a México de afuera identity and contributed to the making of a Mexican American identity that connected immigrants to Southern California and American society in general. Ultimately, both impulses helped to instill a new political confidence among MAASC members to challenge the Los Angeles Department of Playground and Recreation’s paternalistic approach toward the Mexican community. José Arteaga was born in Baja California, Mexico, moved to Los Angeles during his teen years, and in 1921 teamed up with Lamberto Alvarez Gayou to form the first all-Mexican basket- ball team, “Bohemia.” Gayou eventually became the president of Mexico’s first sports federation, and Arteaga became a basketball player and coach in the city’s new amateur athletic association. Arteaga coached several teams, with only the best players chosen to play exhibition games in Mexico. -

Abstract: Daniel Matamala In this thesis for his Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University, Chilean journalist Daniel Matamala explores the relationship between sports and politics, looking at what voters' favorite sports can tell us about their political leanings and how "POWER GAMES: How this can be and is used to great eect in election campaigns. He nds that -unlike soccer in Europe or Latin America which cuts across all social barriers- sports in the sports help to elect United States can be divided into "red" and "blue". During wartime or when a nation is under attack, sports can also be a powerful weapon Presidents, run campaigns for fuelling the patriotism that binds a nation together. And it can change the course of history. and promote wars." In a key part of his thesis, Matamala describes how a small investment in a struggling baseball team helped propel George W. We have a very special luncheon today on sports, both professional and amateur, the Olympics, baseball, and other subjects that our speakers wish to discuss today. Our first speaker will be Mr. Peter V. Ueberroth. He is well known, I think, to everyone in the room. He started his own travel business, a very successful business, subsequently accepted the position managing the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, one of the most successful this country or any other has ever had, and subsequently became Commissioner of Baseball. When we first contacted him about speaking today, we told him that we were seeking George Steinbrenner. After Peter had accepted, we talked with George.
