Sufism in the Western History : A Primary Outline Andrew Rawlinson University of Lancaster Abstract The phenomenon of Western Sufi teachers is unique, not just because of the individuals themselves, though they are certainly fascinating, but because of what they represent: the flowering of the Western genius, which has discovered Eastern traditions, absorbed them and in the process changed them and been changed by them. This paper is a primary outline of the main contours of this phenomenon, trying to brief its history and attempt an explanation of what it means. Keywords: Sufism, Western Sufism, Mysticism, History of Sufism Introduction About a century ago there were no Western gurus - no Westerners who were Hindu swamis, Zen roshis or Sufi sheikhs. Now there are hundreds. From a standing start, the West has produced its own spiritual teachers in traditions that were originally quite foreign. And in the last 25 years, a number of independent teachers have appeared, who belong to no tradition but teach from themselves. These people are changing Western culture by making available a view of the human condition which is new in the West. This view is based on four principles: - human beings are best understood in terms of consciousness and its modifications, - consciousness can be transformed by spiritual practice, - there are gurus/masters/teachers who have done this, - and they can help others to do the same by some form of transmission. Hundreds of thousands of Westerners now accept this teaching. To begin with, it was propounded by Easterners: Buddhists, Hindus and Sufis. But gradually Westerners began to teach the Buddhist, Hindu and Sufi versions of it. -

Waliy> in the fiqh study In terms of fiqh, the word of "waliy> " has an meaning the person who according to the law (religious, traditional) obligations entrusted to attend to orphans, before the child is an adult; parties which represent a bride at the time married (is doing the ceremony with the groom).1 1. Waliy> in marriage a. Definition of waliy> and its position in marriage In marriage, the word of waliy> is a person who acts on behalf of the bride in a marriage ceremony. The existence of waliy> in the marriage ceremony is one thing that must there and will not be valid marriage contract without action of the waliy>. Waliy> was placed as a pillar in marriage according to ulema agreement in principally. To the young bride, both male or female scholars agree on him sit as a pillar or a condition in the marriage contract. The reason is that the bride is still not able to perform the contract by itself and therefore the contract made by their waliy>. But for women who have grown up either widowed or still a virgin, ulema have different idea. -

STUDIES ON QU™B AL-DIN AL-SHIRAZI III 15 QU™B AL-DIN AL-SHIRAZI (D. 710/1311) AS A TEACHER: AN ANALYSIS OF HIS IJAZAT (STUDIES ON QU™B AL-DIN AL-SHIRAZI III)1 BY REZA POURJAVADY & SABINE SCHMIDTKE Qu†b al-Din al-Shirazi, who had reached the peak of his scholarly career at the turn of the 8th/14th century, was in close contact with most of the leading scholars of his time throughout his life, be it as teachers, colleagues, associates or students. In the introduction to his commentary on Ibn Sina’s (d. 428/1037) Qanun, he included some details about his childhood and early education, particularly in the field of medicine.2 In his Durrat al-taj, he relates that he was initiated into Sufism by his father, Δiyaˆ al-Din Mas¨ud b. al-MuÒliÌ al-Kaziruni, who invested him with the “habit of benediction” (khirqat al-tabarruk) at the age of ten, and that he received the “habit of aspiration” (khirqat al-irada) at the age of thirty from MuÌyi al-Din AÌmad b. ¨Ali b. The first is that Sufism does not represent authentic Islam. This is allegedly because its teachings do not come directly from the Qur'an, the Prophet Muhammad, and the first generations of Muslims ( al-Salaf al-Salih ). According to this "Salafi" argument, Sufism is a Trojan horse for unwarranted innovations that owe their origins to non-Muslim civilizations such as Greece, Persia, and India. The Salafi polemic began early in the history of Sufism, and is often associated with the anti-Sufi arguments of Hanbali scholars, such as Ibn al-Jawzi (d.1201) in Talbis Iblis or Ibn Taymiyya (d.1328) in his critiques of Ibn 'Arabi.[ 1] It was given a new lease on life in the twentieth century by the modernist reformer Muhammad Rashid Rida (d.1935), who edited Ibn Taymiyya's works and influenced later Salafi ideologues such as Hasan al-Banna (d.1949), the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood.[ 2] Although Banna saw some value in what he called "pure" Sufism, he condemned the Sufi tradition as a whole for incorporating foreign ideas, such as "the sciences of philosophy and logic and the heritage and thought of ancient nations". As a result, he asserted, "Wide gaps were opened for every atheist, apostate, and corrupter of opinion and faith to enter by the door in the name of Sufism."[ 3] In the generation after Banna's death, Salafi modernism, represented by the Muslim Brotherhood and allied groups such as Pakistan's Jamaat-i Islam, contracted a marriage of convenience with Salafi traditionalism, represented by the Wahhabi sect of Saudi Arabia. -

Yet, it also offers certain rewards and benefits to human psychology. The purpose of this article is to explain how Zakat (Islamic charity), or the giving of alms to the poor or those in need, can help improve one’s psychological well-being. The study found that sincerity and understanding the wisdom of Zakat are the two important elements for improving psychological well-being among Muslim believers. This is because Zakat can foster many positive attitudes such sincerity, compassion, and gratitude. Moreover, Zakat can also prevent negative traits like greed, arrogance, and selfishness. Therefore, Zakat, performed with sincerity and philosophical understanding can be used as a form treatment for neurosis patients. It is hoped that this article can serve as a guideline for psychologists and counsellors in how to treat Muslim neurosis patients. From the introduction of the English translation & interpretation by Shaykh Nur/Lex Hixon & Shayka Fariha al-Jerrahi IBN AL-'ARABI'S COLLECTION OF 101 TRANSMISSIONS Ibn al-'Arabi, the Greatest Shaykh as he came to be called, was born in the 12th Century in Islamic Spain. At a young age his outstanding intellect and luminous presence had attracted many of the living teachers and guides. Very early he himself became a guide for the Sufi community and a spiritual authority on Qur'an and Hadith. The doctors of theology, the 'ulama, often found his radical interpretations, revealing the all-merciful nature of Allah, in contradiction to their own narrow point of view-- and at certain times his life was in danger from the people of dogma. However, his stature as a spiritual giant protected him. The volume of Ibn al-'Arabi's writing was immense, creating a vast reservoir of mystic knowledge for all seekers of knowledge and practitioners of Sufism. At the age of twenty five it was divinely revealed to him that he was the "Seal of Muhammadan Sainthood", "the Seal of the Saints". He was the one who would reveal to the greatest degree the light of the Prophet Muhammad's heart and the hidden oceanic depths of knowledge. Therefore he is the highest authority on the interpretation of Qur'an and Hadith after the Prophet and Hazreti 'Ali. This is why he came to be called the greatest of skaykhs, the treacher of shaykhs, al-Shaykh al-Akbar.
