II. LRS SPECTRA The sample consists of 304 carbon stars with entries in the LRS catalog (Papers I-III). The LRS spectra have been divided into three groups. Group I consists of nine stars with 9.7 and 18 tun silicate features in their LRS spectra pointing to oxygen-rich dust in the circumstellar shell. These sources are discussed in Paper I. The remaining stars all have spectra with carbon-rich dust features. Using NIR photometry we have shown that in the group II spectra the stellar photosphere is the dominant continuum. The NIR color temperature is of the order of 25OO K. Paper II contains a discussion of sources with this class of spectra. The continuum in the group III spectra is probably due to amorphous carbon dust. -

The 33 “written” on the Schmidt Telescope dome using a green laser pointer during the two-minute exposure commemorates the rescue effort of 33 miners trapped for 69 days almost 700 m underground in the San Jose mine in northern Chile. The Hot Components in the Recurrent Novae T Pyxidis, IM Norma, CI Aquilae and in the Dwarf Nova U Geminorum PoS(GOLDEN 2017)058 Edward M. Sion∗ and Patrick Godon† Astrophysics & Planetary Science Villanova University Villanova, PA 19085, USA E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] We report on the latest results from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) far ultraviolet spectroscopy with the Cosmic Object Spectrograph (COS), of the short orbital period recurrent novae (RNe) T Pyxidis, IM Norma (the first ever FUV spectrum of this RN) and CI Aquilae, the only known recurrent novae with main sequence donors and orbital periods less than a day. The last two HST COS spectra we obtained in October, 2016 and June, 2016, reveal that the accretion rate of T Pyx has declined by 20% below its quiescent continuum flux level recorded by the IUE following the 1966 outburst, an indication that the system might not have yet reached its (new) quiescent state. Recent HST COS Spectroscopy of the cooling of the white dwarf in the prototypical dwarf nova U Geminorum is also discussed with a focus on the chemical abundances in the white dwarf photosphere. But, the upshot is that you’ll now be able to see what we discussed at the recent business meeting and have time to digest it before our general meeting in case you want to give some feedback. Now that we’re on the new format, business meetings (and the oft neglected Light Pollution Committee Meeting), are going to start being open to all members of the club again by simply joining up in the respective chat rooms the Wednesday before the first Monday of the month—which I encourage people to do, especially if you have some ideas you want to see the club put into action. -

CP Pup (Nova Pup 1942) showed outburst and quiescent characteristics indicating a very massive white dwarf, yet the standard spectroscopic dynamical analysis assuming an accretion disk yields an extremely low value for the white dwarf mass. However, some physical parameters and the accretion geometry are still poorly known. Aims. The nova was spectroscopically monitored between 1988 and 1996. We analyzed the whole data set in order to re-determine the spectroscopic period and examine its stability. We also looked for chemical anomalies in the spectrum. Methods. We obtained the radial velocity curves for the hydrogen and helium lines from our last better quality 1996 run. The mean 1996 spectrum yields information on the chemical composition of the binary. We also searched the mean period using the multi-year data set. Results. From the radial velocities of our complete data set we derive the most probable mean spectroscopic period and tentatively suggest revised ephemeris. -

No. 17 - June 1979 Shells Around Southern Novae H. W. Duerbeck and W. C. Seitter Spencer Jones published in 1931 a bulky volume of Although less spectacular than their big brothers, spectroscopic and visual observations made at the Cape the supernovae, the novae are by no means less Observatory. The excellent resolution of the 3.6 m photos makes itpossible to see details in the very faint nova shells that have never been perceived before. The southern sky comprises one of the most fanciful supernova remnants-the extended spider web of the Gum nebula. It harbours also some less spectacular, tiny, astronomically shortlived phenomena: the remnants of near nova explosions. They can be observed for only a few decades after outburst, before they thin out and merge into the interstellar medium. Due to their small size and low surface brightness, they require large telescopes, such as have recently become available in the southern hemi sphere. Fortunately, some observing time was granted to us before the above-mentioned disappearances! RR Pictoris Two brilliant novae shone in the southern sky in this century. -

I grew up in Denmark in the 1950s, a time when Europe was healing the wounds after the ravages of the Second World War. Already at the age of 7 I had fallen in love with astronomy, but information was very hard to come by in those days, so I scraped together what I could, mainly relying on the local library. At some point I was introduced to the magazine Sky and Telescope, and soon invested my pocket money in a subscription. Every month I would sit at our dining room table with a dictionary and work my way through the latest issue. In one issue I read about Herbig-Haro objects, and I was completely mesmerized that these objects could be signposts of the formation of stars, and I dreamt about some day being able to contribute to this field of study.
