Many of the films listed were made in a time when filmmakers had to refrain from including curse words, exploitive sexuality or desensitizing violence. To younger members of the family, that means, these films are old! Understandably, a younger generation will not relate to styles and mannerisms of a time gone by, but here is something to keep in mind. Though haircuts change and clothing tightens, people all desire to be warm, to be fed, to be loved, to be respected, etc. In other words, we share a commonality with those of all generations. We’re really not all that different from one another. The following movies will entertain because they contain the most special special effect of all: great storytelling.

  • The Naked and the Dead: the Representation of the Dead and the Construction of the Other in Contemporary Cinema: the Case of M
THE NAKED AND THE DEAD: THE REPRESENTATION OF THE DEAD AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE OTHER IN CONTEMPORARY CINEMA: THE CASE OF M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN Iván Pintor Iranzo [email protected] SUMMARY The article proposes a hermeneutic approach to the films of M. Night Shyamalan based on a study of the convergence of three parallel processes: the detailed use of planning and, most of all, the shot- countershot, and the dialectic between field and out of field, the open construction of otherness; and, lastly, the narrative motif of the dead person who returns. The director manages to link those three aspects with a detailed investigation into the possibilities of the fantastic genre in order to metaphorically approach the problems of contemporary society and a new involvement of the viewer in the suspension of disbelief required by fiction. KEY WORDS Film, Hermeneutics, Eschatology, Manoj Night Shyamalan, Death, Burial, Funeral, Accident, Revenant , Zombi, Other, Otherness, Threat, Narration, Story, Shot, Countershot, Field, Out of field, Suspense, Resurrection, Tragedy, Gnosis, Ricoeur, Antigone, Orpheus, Eurydice, Dreyer, Lang, Tourneur, Hitchcock, Lynch. ARTICLE “that flock of ill-fated shadows”, said my guide, “whom you have not been able to look in the face, following in your footsteps”. and from the old bridge I saw a troop of shadows on the far side, scourged by the merciless whip. Dante , Divine Comedy, Hell, Canto XVIII One of the fundamental narrative and iconographic motifs of the fantastic genre is the dead person who returns from the grave to demand or claim something. (1) In a large number of contemporary films in which the fantastic has become second nature to melodrama, that return has taken on an unusual formulation: the person has ceased to be a mere incarnation of an unsatisfied impulse, an outstanding debt, and has become the protagonist of a fiction caught on the fundamental ellipse of his own death, usually an unexpected and violent one.

  • Night Light: Beauty and Truth in the Films of M. Night Shyamalan ______
-DRAFT- Night Light: Beauty and Truth in the Films of M. Night Shyamalan ____________________ Brian B. Clayton Philosophy Department Gonzaga University Spokane, Washington The phrase, “I see dead people,” has entered into the lexicon of popular culture. It was made famous, of course, by the film The Sixth Sense, the surprise hit thriller from 1999. For the writer-director, M. Night Shyamalan, the success of that film must have been a reassuring relief after the very limited success of his previous two films. Shyamalan’s first film, Praying With Anger (1992), was shot in India. It received only limited release on the festival circuit in North America. (It is the only one of his films that isn’t available on VHS or DVD in the United States.) It would be another six years before he had a film commercially released—Wide Awake (1998). Although Wide Awake was seen outside the festival circuit, it still had very minimal success. Thus, the commercial success of The Sixth Sense, just a year later, would have been especially and pleasantly surprising. Shyamalan has gone on, of course, to write and direct three more films—Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), and The Village (2004). Only Signs has come close to the commercial and critical success of The Sixth Sense. It seems to me that Shyamalan has been somewhat shackled by the success of The Sixth Sense: people now expect his films to be thrillers and expect them to have a “twist” at or near 1 the end. A better guide to Shyamalan’s films may be Wide Awake.

  • Production Information
Production Information The world is engulfed by the fires of war, and no one has the power to stop the inevitable destruction…until now. For nearly a century, the Fire Nation has waged its deadly campaign for global domination over its fellow tribal nations of Air, Water and Earth. They offer but one choice to the tribes who fall to their might—complete surrender, or complete annihilation. As the villagers vainly attempt to defend themselves, they stand behind the chosen few who can command their nation’s element and ‘bend’ it to their will. Backed by enormous armies and weapons of destruction, however, the firebenders have already eliminated every airbender on the planet and now, they turn their attentions to the Water Nation, headquartered in their northern fortress. One day, young waterbender Katara (NICOLA PELTZ) is out practicing her skills with her brother Sokka (JACKSON RATHBONE) when they discover a young boy named Aang (NOAH RINGER). But as Aang’s airbending skills become apparent, Katara and Sokka realize that they have found more than just the last airbender. As the prophesied Avatar—the only one who can control all four of the elements—the young airbender is the lone weapon that can repel the Fire Nation’s onslaught and ultimately restore balance to the war-torn world. But can he master his bending skills and become the hero he needs to be before it is too late? A master storyteller, Oscar®-nominated writer/producer/director M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN (“The Sixth Sense,” “Signs,” “Unbreakable”) brings the hit animated series “The Last Airbender” to the big screen, creating an epic, larger-than-life world that explodes with spectacular special effects, great action and exciting adventure.
