Night Shyamalan is staying in the Universal Pictures family for his next project. And the one after that. Universal announced today that it will release the next two M. Night Shyamalan movies on February 26, 2021 and February 17, 2023, respectively. The title, cast, and plot details are firmly under wraps aside from describing the films as "original thrillers," but we can’t help but think the two projects are possibly connected somehow. “M. Night Shyamalan continues to create exciting, highly original stories that keep global audiences on the edge of their seats,” Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said in a statement. “There is no one like him: he is a master filmmaker working at the height of his powers, and we are honored that he has once again chosen Universal to be the home for his next two incredible projects.” Image via Sony Pictures. Added Shyamalan, “There are wonderful studios out there, but Universal has made it a mandate to release original films. They are the best at finding an audience for new stories with unexpected tones. I believe original films are crucial to the longevity of the theatrical experience." Shyamalan’s last three films were at Universal. His 2015 found footage film The Visit was considered the director’s first comeback following a fallow period that began with Lady in the Water and ran through 2013’s box office disaster After Earth . The scaled-down The Visit grossed $98.5 million against a budget of just $5 million, and his next film Split was an even greater success grossing $278.5 million worldwide against a budget of just $9 million. That movie revealed itself to be a surprise Unbreakable sequel, and led to the 2019 release of Glass , Shyamalan’s most star-studded effort in years. That Unbreakable / Split follow-up underperformed, pulling in $274 million worldwide. While that’s a significant profit margin against the $20 million budget, it’s less than Split , which wasn’t even marketed as a sequel to a beloved superhero drama. Moreover, reaction to Glass was somewhat muted, with many disappointed by the twist-filled ending. Regardless, it appears Universal still wants to stay in the Shyamalan fold, and I’m curious to see what these next two projects are. Like all of his previous films at Universal, Shyamalan will self-finance these next two movies, and Universal will handle distribution. Has he crafted a two-part story? The similar release date two years apart suggests the films are connected somehow, or perhaps Universal just likes that release window for Shyamalan movies. Next up for Shyamalan is the release of his psychological thriller AppleTV+ series Servant , for which he directed two episodes including the pilot. AppleTV+ only just released pricing and release date details last week. Split. Though Kevin has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him — as well as everyone around him — as the walls between his compartments shatter apart. Night Shyamalan shocked Universal execs with the ending of Split. M. Night Shyamalan is no stranger to surprises, having delivered more than a few twist endings over the course of his decades-long directorial career. Apparently, Shyamalan’s penchant for surprises extends beyond viewers and to film studios as well. Speaking on the ReelBlend podcast about his new movie Old , the director recalled the time he shocked Universal Pictures with his ending to 2016’s Split. As it turns out, the movie originally wasn’t supposed to tie into Shyamalan’s 2000 hit Unbreakable. Shyamalan used unusual channels to get the films to connect, which eventually led to 2019’s Glass. At the very end of Split , after the main story involving James McAvoy’s superhuman character, we cut to a diner where Bruce Willis’ character from Unbreakable , David Dunn, is eating. It was a Shyamalan shared universe the whole time! The problem was that Unbreakable belonged to another studio, so Shyamalan got their permission on his own and shot the scene that would blend the films without Universal knowing. Naturally, the execs were surprised. “I go to the Universal Studios chairman, marketing team, everyone’s in the theater,” Shyamalan recalled. “We pull down the lights, and we play them Split . They don’t know the ending that they’re watching. They didn’t even know I shot it because I didn’t even send them the dailies.” They look at me, and they’re like, ‘What are you saying? That’s a Disney movie!’ And I go, ‘It’s all good. We have the permission to do it!’ Can you imagine? You are the chairman of the studio, and the guy shows you that it’s a sequel to a movie from another studio? M. Night Shyamalan and Bruce Willis weren’t sure they’d use the final scene of Split. Although Shyamalan was able to keep his plans under wraps from Universal Pictures, the director needed to convince Bruce Willis to return for Split ‘s final scene — despite not knowing if it would make it into the movie. From the sound of it, Willis was happy to reprise the role, even if a sequel hadn’t been greenlit at that point. Shyamalan recounted their discussion: When I wrote that movie, I didn’t put the end scene on. I handed it to the studio without that end scene on. We shot it without that end scene on. We previewed it without that end scene on. And then the best part was, I said, ‘Let’s just go for it.’ Lemme call Bruce and say, ‘Hey dude, would you just come to Philly for three hours and shoot this thing for me?’ And he was like, ‘Why? What?’ And I was like, ‘Well, I did this movie, and it’s kind of in the Unbreakable world. I don’t know if we’ll ever shoot a sequel. Do you just want to just come for three hours, bro?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. I’ll come.’ It’s a good thing Willis was open to the idea, since Shyamalan’s surprise worked out in the long run. Both Willis and Samuel L. Jackson returned for Glass, officially turning the director’s story into a trilogy. If Split feels like an odd segue between the two films, however, it’s probably because it wasn’t originally supposed to be a sequel. It’s thanks to Shyamalan’s clever approach that Unbreakable got its own universe — and two follow- up films set in it. MELANCHOLY AND SACRIFICE IN CONTEMPORARY SCIENCE FICTION Ivan Pintor Iranzo [email protected] SUMMARY n an constant gaze to September 11's zero hour, the image of Apocalypse in contemporary science fiction appears tinged with melancholy. By recognizing the threshold of 2001 as a crack in History's continuum, a significant number of today's American science fiction films, from the last works of Spielberg to M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (2008), explores the different tensions that relate the manifestation of temporality with the essential patterns of Apocalypse. Through the image of a black sun, these films find a common link with superheroes comics, television series such as Lost (2004-2009) and with other expressions of contemporary plastic like the ones from the Danish artist Oliafur Eliasson. By recognising on the threshold of 2001 a rupture in the continuum of History, a significant number of current US science fiction films, ranging from Spielberg’s latest works to The Happening (2008), by M. In the image of the black sun, of the veil of sadness with which nature reveals itself with regard to the self burdened with melancholy, these films find a common nexus with the superhero comic strip, with TV series such as Lost (2004- 2009) and with some expressions of contemporary plastics like those of Danish artist Oliafur Eliasson.

Many of the films listed were made in a time when filmmakers had to refrain from including curse words, exploitive sexuality or desensitizing violence. To younger members of the family, that means, these films are old! Understandably, a younger generation will not relate to styles and mannerisms of a time gone by, but here is something to keep in mind. Though haircuts change and clothing tightens, people all desire to be warm, to be fed, to be loved, to be respected, etc. In other words, we share a commonality with those of all generations. We’re really not all that different from one another. The following movies will entertain because they contain the most special special effect of all: great storytelling.

Haast: Movie Reviews- Unfaithful Movie Reviews – UNFAITHFUL by Talaria Haast Okay, so honestly, the fact that this movie was way hot almost outweighed its flaws. Almost...but not quite. So let’s begin with Richard Gere. First of all, I thought his initial reaction was accurate. Well, not accurate, because I can’t really back that up...but handled in what seemed to be a realistic way. His relationship with Diane Lane was logical up to the point where you believed that she cheated because they were just so mismatched. I don’t much see Gere as a romantic lead (even though some casting directors do), so I really could see Lane growing apart. Diane Lane, meanwhile, was fantastic. She was truly wonderful in the portrayal of a woman who does not want to cheat, but is unable to stop herself. Beautifully done. Olivier Matinez? Pssh. Loved him since The Horseman on the Roof. Sexy, fun, French....basically a nice combination.
