FORT BRAGG’S LOGGING HISTORY 1856 the Mendocino Indian Reservation was established in the Fort Bragg area. In the summer of 1857 a military post was built to help maintain order. InThe fort was abandoned in 1864 and the reservation was closed. By 1869 the Coast had begun to thrive in the lumber industry and mills were being built at every available location. In 1873 Fort Bragg had established itself as a lumber port by using Noyo Harbor. In 1885 the reservation lands were offered for sale at a price of $1.25 per acre. A man named C.R. Johnson bought a large portion of the land and built his mill site upon it. He and his partner Calvin Stewa saw that the Fort Bragg land would be an ideal location due to the nearness to the harbor. Their company, the Fort Bragg Lumber Company was renamed in 1893 and became the Union Lumber Company. Union Lumber was responsible for establishing Fort Bragg. The company built the railroad, drew up the plot maps for the town, laid the first water pipes, and built the first houses and buildings in town, many of which still stand. The Union Lumber Company was also responsible for incorporating Fort Bragg in 1889 making it an official city. C. R. Johnson was the town’s first mayor. The biggest boon to Fort Bragg’s history was one of the worst disasters in California. In 1906, when the large quake hit San Francisco, Fort Bragg was also threatened. A fire erupted burning a large section of the downtown area, and every brick building was either damaged or destroyed. Within months, however, Fort Bragg was back on its feet and almost as good as new. Thankfully, the quake brought prosperity in its wake. San Francisco needed a lot of lumber to rebuild and Union Lumber Company was there to supply it. With the new influx of wealth, C.R. Johnson was able to complete the rail line between Fort Bragg and Willits, which he had been working towards for many years, and tourists were soon coming to the coast. By 1916 Fort Bragg had become known as a popular place to visit and a great place to live. The Union Lumber Company was purchased by Boise Cascade in 1969, which later became Georgia Pacific. The mill closed its operations for good in 2002, however, logging has not stopped completely in Fort Bragg. There are still a number of local companies that log the woods and transport the logs to other mills. You can still see these loads of lumber being hauled by truck if you drive on Main Street. WHERE’S THE FORT Fort Bragg’s Military History June 11, 1857. First Lieutenant Horatio G. Gibson established Mendocino County’s first military post on the Mendocino Indian Reservation with Onthe purpose of maintaining order. The Mendocino Indian Reservation at Noyo was established in 1856 and was 25,000 acres, extending north from what is now Simpson Lane to Abalobadiah Creek and from the shore east to Bald Hill. First Lieutenanat Gibson named the post “Fort Bragg” in honor of his former commander Captain Braxton Bragg. Many years later, Fort Bragg in North Caroli- na would be named after the same man. The fort’s original boundaries extended south from Laurel Street at the train depot to the western most point of Redwood Avenue, and east from the train depot to the alley behind Franklin Street. The fort remained in operation until 1864 when the garrison was loaded on a steam vessel and the fort left empty. The reservation was disbanded in March 1886 and the land then opened for settlement. Throughout the years the fort buildings were taken down and the building supplies used elsewhere. The last remaining building stands at 430 North Franklin Street. It was the Quarter-Masters storehouse and commissary. Today, Fort Bragg’s military presence is the United States Coast Guard Station in Noyo Harbor. This station is responsible for over 5,000 square miles of the Pacif- ic Ocean including the entire Mendocino County coastline and part of Humboldt County’s coast.
