The Devil We Already Know: Medieval Representations of a Powerless Satan in Modern American Cinema Abstract The character of Satan has been explored repeatedly in American films, although neither film noreligion r scholars have extensively investigated the topic. This article examines the medieval Christian roots of Satan as seen in American cinema and proposes that the most identifiable difference between the medieval Devil and the Satan shown in American films is his level of power over humanity. Hollywood's Satans echo medieval depictions of Satan in form, appearance, and ways of interacting with humans. Although less frightening, pop culture's view of Satan - even when he is treated humorously - is thus linked through movies to medieval religious beliefs. Tib5201 April 2003 TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN Baggage X-ray Scanning Effects on Film Updated April 8, 2003 Airport Baggage Scanning Equipment Can Jeopardize Your Unprocessed Film Because your pictures are important to you, this information is presented as an alert to travelers carrying unprocessed film. New FAA-certified (Federal Aviation Administration) explosive detection systems are being used in U.S. airports to scan (x-ray) checked baggage. This stronger scanning equipment is also being used in many non-US airports. The new equipment will fog any unprocessed film that passes through the scanner. The recommendations in this document are valid for all film formats (135, Advanced Photo System [APS], 120/220, sheet films, 400 ft. rolls, ECN in cans, etc.). Note: X rays from airport scanners don’t affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed, i.e. film from which you have received prints, slides, KODAK PHOTO CD Discs, or KODAK Picture CDs. This document also does not cover how mail sanitization affects film. If you would like information on that topic, click on this Kodak Web site: mail sanitization. Suggestions for Avoiding Fogged Film X-ray equipment used to inspect carry-on baggage uses a very low level of x-radiation that will not cause noticeable damage to most films. However, baggage that is checked (loaded on the planes as cargo) often goes through equipment with higher energy X rays. Therefore, take these precautions when traveling with unprocessed film: • Don’t place single-use cameras or unprocessed film in any luggage or baggage that will be checked.

Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

Baker Marquart and Quinn Emanuel Win Jury Verdict in Last Samurai Case Law360, New York (May 24, 2012, 11:30 AM ET) -- With the reputations of “The Last Samurai” director Edward Zwick and his longtime collaborator Marshall Herskovitz on the line, Gary Gans of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP fought back against allegations of screenplay theft with a multipronged strategy that used the film itself as its own defense. The case centered on two screenwriting brothers, Aaron and Matthew Benay, who in 2005 claimed Zwick and Herskovitz, along with Bedford Falls Productions, had stolen the idea for the 2003 Tom Cruise film from a screenplay the Benay brothers had allegedly submitted to Bedford Falls. Zwick and Herskovitz, longtime collaborators behind films like “Traffic” and “Blood Diamond” and television shows like “Thirtysomething” and “My So-Called Life,” denied using the Benays’ screenplay in writing and producing their film. They asserted that the evidence showed their project was the product of an intense collaboration with “Gladiator” writer John Logan. While the claims of copyright infringement and breach of implied contract were tossed in 2008, two years later, the Ninth Circuit reversed the dismissal of the breach-of-implied- contract claim while affirming the dismissal of the copyright claim. Gans came to the conclusion that the central theme of the movie — honor — was one of the pathways to his clients’ vindication. “The key to this case from my viewpoint was that the movie was largely about honor,” Gans told Law360. “We tried to channel that theme and the emotion of the movie so that they would be associated not only with the movie, but also with our clients in the courtroom as honorable people — which they are — and to show that they had no need or desire to steal someone else's ideas.” What was fundamental to that line of reasoning was to avoid falling into the trap of being labeled the Hollywood establishment types against the young and aspiring writers.
