Forces and Interactions
Forces and Interactions 3rd Grade Unit Teacher Manual NGSS lesson Planning Template Grade: Topic: Lesson (number/title): 3'd grade JForces and Interactions JF 1- Forces in "Tug of War" Brief Lesson Description: Students will explore the impact of unbalanced and balanced forces through the game "Tug of War." Performance Expectation(s): 3-PS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. 3-PS2-2. Make observations and/or measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion. Specific Learning Outcomes: Students will learn that an object will move in the direction of the largest force as well as an object will not be in motion if the forces are equal. Narrative I Background Information Teacher Preparation: This activity will need to be completed in a large open space such as a field or gymnasium. Background Knowledge: A force is a push or pull on an object. Most of the knowledge that is known about forces was discovered by Sir Isaac Newton, a famous mathematician and scientist. He developed three laws involving forces and motion. In this activity, we will explore Newton's First Law of Motion: an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an outside, unbalanced force. Balanced forces occur when an object is not moving. For example, when a book is resting on a table it has balanced forces on it. -

And now, following upon these travels There were two main reasons for this. First, over the surface of the earth, a new kind of the nature of the three first chapters of travel, travels in time, caused a new kind of Genesis, describing the creation of the world discoveries to be made, even more surprising and of man, was still poorly understood. Now, and disturbing. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates—and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very contro- versy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh "Boom" Trenchard of Great Britain and William "Billy" Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. -

Semantic Representations of Word Meanings by the Cerebral Hemispheres
Brain and Language 80, 393±420 (2002) doi:10.1006/brln.2001.2599, available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on Semantic Representations of Word Meanings by the Cerebral Hemispheres Elizabeth Ince The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Stephen D. Christman The University of Toledo Two priming experiments investigated kind and strength of semantic knowledge underlying known, frontier, and unknown low frequency words. Results from Experiment 1 suggest that known words re¯ect categorical knowledge, but frontier and unknown words re¯ect thematic knowledge. Thematic knowledge for frontier words appears to be stronger than that for un- known words. Experiment 2 entailed visual half-®eld presentation of targets. All facilitory effects were restricted to the lvf/RH, and inhibitory effects to the rvf/LH. Experiment 1 ®nd- ings were mirrored by the RH. Thematic knowledge appears to precede categorical knowledge for the RH, but the opposite may be true of the LH . Results are also discussed in terms of the RH role in meaning acquisition and metacontrol. 2002 Elsevier Science (USA) Key Words: word knowledge; partial knowledge; hemisphere(s); laterality; cerebral asym- metry; word meaning; meaning acquisition; metacontrol; priming; semantic representation(s); low frequency words. INTRODUCTION Two experiments were conducted to explore the kinds of semantic knowledge at different levels of word knowledge, and how this knowledge may be organized and differentially processed by the cerebral hemispheres. The ®rst experiment investi- gated the semantic processing of words at different levels of knowledge, and the second experiment examined the role each cerebral hemisphere plays in the pro- cessing of these words.
