  • Voltaire and the Jews
VOLTAIRE AND THE JEWS Maxine Schur (415) 448-5863 100 Oakmont Avenue San Rafael, CA 94403 - 1 - Continuing Studies MLA 09 Professor Paul Robinson - 2 - Introduction The idea of religious tolerance engendered by The Enlightenment led to a change in the legal and economic status of the Jews. Given civil rights and allowed a freedom of movement denied to them for centuries, Western European Jews in the nineteenth century rose to high levels in the professions, the arts, business and even government. Yet beneath the new external acceptance of the Jews, there existed in European society a virulent undercurrent of anti- Semitism. This anti-Semitism was different than the one that had plagued the Jews in the Middle-Ages or during the Inquisition for it was based not on theological, but secular grounds. It was racial, rooted in bogus-biology. Paradoxically, this racial anti-Semitism was given authority and first popularized by a self-confessed proponent of religious tolerance, the celebrated philosopher of the Enlightenment, Voltaire. My paper discusses Voltaire’s anti-Semitism: the historical developments that influenced it and, in turn, its influence on modern history. Attitudes Toward the Jews Prior to The Enlightenment. Throughout the Middle Ages the position of the Jews in Europe was dependent merely upon the good graces of some secular or ecclesiastical authority. Yet these authorities were prejudiced by the theory that the Jews were Christ killers, condemned to eternal wandering and damnation. This theory, stemming from Christian theology, was pervasive throughout Europe for centuries and influenced how the Jews were treated. Jews in the medieval period were never free from overt acts of hostility and violence and after the First Crusade of 1096 their position grew even worse.

  • Western Europe
Western Europe Great Britain Domestic Affairs A HE YEAR 1970 will certainly be remembered—whatever else his- tory may subsequently add—as "the year of the counter-revolution," resulting from the unforeseen Conservative victory in the general election of June 18. When Parliament dissolved on May 29, Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the Labour party then had a majority of 65 seats in the Commons, but was much eroded by by-election losses. On June 19 Edward Heath was prime minister, with an over-all majority of 31 seats and an effective majority of 29. The Conservatives had made a net gain of 66 seats and Labour had suffered 60 losses. This overturn was so unexpected that The Guardian headlined its lead article of June 19: "Mr. Heath does a Truman." Virtually no commentator or opinion poll had predicted this outcome. The dominant tone of comment was to deplore the low intellectual level of the debate between the two dominant parties. The debate had become an adjunct to television, rather than the reverse, it was said. Be that as it may, less argu- able was the equally general comment that no serious issue divided the parties. The two comments were perhaps related. As for the latter comment, it was certainly true that both parties were at one on policy regarding the European Common Market, that they tacitly agreed not to discuss the problem of rapidly rising wages, and that such issues of contention as did exist—the maintenance of a small force east of Suez, agricultural policy, the degree of state intervention in industry, even trade union reform—all failed to arouse the public.

  • Implications of Jewish Divorces That Became Causes Célèbres
Implications of Jewish divorces that became causes célèbres: The reform of Jewish status and juridical centralization by Suzette Blom A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Suzette Blom, November 2012 ABSTRACT IMPLICATIONS OF JEWISH DIVORCES THAT BECAME CAUSES CÉLÈBRES: THE REFORM OF JEWISH STATUS AND JURIDICAL CENTRALIZATION Suzette Blom Advisor: University of Guelph, 2012 Professor William Cormack This dissertation examines the reform of Jewish status in France in the eighteenth century in connection with the monarchy's impetus to centralize juridical authority. In particular it focuses on how litigating divorces in sovereign courts affected Jewish civil status. This study suggests a new perspective on events leading up to the decrees of 1790 and 1791 that granted the Jews active citizenship and the legalization of divorce in 1792. It examines the extent of the role that making Jewish divorce subject to secular national courts played in the acceptance of Jews as citizens. It concludes that Jewish divorces which attracted public attention as causes célèbres enhanced the role of the Jews in the larger process of juridical centralization and added a new dimension to the construction of a French identity. It further concludes that the reform of Jewish status was part of the erosion of traditional religious values and the growth of ideals of individualism. The principal manifestation of this process was the attempt to develop a uniform legal code for both the public and private spheres. This change included calls for the dissolution of marriage which was prohibited in France for all groups other than Jews as a result of the influence of the Church.
