Jag önskar honom all välgång i sitt fortsatta arbete. -
Future Party Leaders Or Burned Out?
Lund University STVM25 Department of Political Science Tutor: Michael Hansen/Moira Nelson Future party leaders or burned out? A mixed methods study of the leading members of the youth organizations of political parties in Sweden Elin Fjellman Abstract While career-related motives are not given much attention in studies on party membership, there are strong reasons to believe that such professional factors are important for young party members. This study is one of the first comprehensive investigations of how career-related motives impact the willingness of Swedish leading young party members to become politicians in the future. A unique survey among the national board members of the youth organizations confirms that career-related motives make a positive impact. However, those who experienced more internal stress were unexpectedly found to be more willing to become politicians in the future. The most interesting indication was that the factor that made the strongest impact on the willingness was the integration between the youth organization and its mother party. Another important goal was to develop an understanding of the meaning of career-related motives for young party members. Using a set of 25 in-depth interviews with members of the youth organizations, this study identifies a sense among the members that holding a high position within a political party could imply professional reputational costs because some employers would not hire a person who is “labelled as a politician”. This notation of reputational costs contributes importantly to the literature that seeks to explain party membership. Promoting the Ecological Swede
Lund University STVK02 HT13 Department of Political Science Tutor: Tobias Nielsen Promoting the Ecological Swede - A Frame Analysis of Swedish Green Party Policy Gino Carciola Abstract Recent developments within the environmental debate have focused on the individual’s role in mitigating environmental degradation this, together with the advancement of feminist thought and globalization, has lead Andrew Dobson to call for a new conception of citizenship an ‘ecological citizenship’. Although being scarce, practical application and empirical testing has affirmed the existence of such a citizen and the unsurprising link with political affiliation. Considering Sweden’s affirmed role as an environmentally friendly nation, how and to what extent has Swedish Green Party policy taken up and adopted ‘ecological citizenship’? Using the method of frame analysis in examining official party policy documents and membership publication articles, this paper found that the Swedish Green Party had taken up and adopted ecological citizenly characteristics. It was also found that the inclusion of the private sphere and policies aimed at individual behavior, mainly taxation, were both significant and indicative for such a conclusion, affirming ‘ecological citizenships’ normative value. Science Versus Religion: the Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960
Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Serdar Poyraz, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Carter V. Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962). -

Islamophobia Report-October 2014
! Cultural & social affairs Department OIC Islamophobia Observatory Monthly Bulletin – OCTOBER 2014 I. MANIFESTATIONS OF ISLAMOPHOBIA: I.I. In the United States and Canada: 1. US: The United West – United West leader Tom Trento said in mid-October that the Florida-based group worked, “to unite western countries, western civilizations western countries, against the Ummah” [Note: The Ummah is the term for family or nations of Islam]. In 2007, Trento renamed his Colorado- based Christian Research Associates as Security Research Associates, Inc. in Florida. For a time, Trento publicly said his organization was the Florida Security Council and more recently changed it to United West. In text accompanying a video distributed on 12 October, 2014, Trento asserted that, “mosques are NOT primarily ‘houses of worship’ but more so, bases of operation to launch a ‘Cultural Jihad’ against America!” In his 17 June, 2014 newsletter, Trento wrote a mocking letter to Muslims living in areas affected by ISIS. He said “Dear Muslims of the Levant, We Americans know you enjoy your oil-drenched lives of crass debauchery and fake religiosity.” The newsletter also asked that Muslims “…agree that Jerusalem… has nothing to do with Islam” and “divest ownership in American gas stations, or at least clean the bathrooms.” During a 9/11 memorial in 2013, Trento told the audience: "I'm not talking about radical Islam or moderate Islam. I'm talking about all Islam. Their goal is to get every single one of us to convert to Islam. And they won't stop until we do." The Canadian Broadcasting Service in 2012 concluded that Trento “considers himself a soldier battling the Muslim menace in the U.S.” and that his group “opposes any project to build new mosques or expand existing ones.” Trento believed that eighty percent of the mosques in the United States were teaching “sedition.” In: http://www.islamophobia.org/islamophobic-orgs/united-west.html, retrieved on 1.11.2014 1 2. -
