    SPECIAL REPORT Safety in numbers Australia’s private security guard force and counterterrorism Anthony Bergin, Donald Williams and Christopher Dixon October 2018 About the authors Anthony Bergin is a senior analyst at ASPI and a senior research fellow at the National Security College, Australian National University. For 20 years Dr Bergin served as an academic at the Australian Defence Force Academy where he taught homeland security. From 1991 to 2003 he was the director of the Australian Defence Studies Centre. He served for four years as an adjunct reader in law at the ANU, where he taught international law. Dr Bergin has been a consultant to a wide range of public- and private-sector clients and has written extensively on national security issues in academic journals, books and reports. He is a regular media commentator and contributes to ASPI’s The Strategist and the Crawford School of Public Policy’s Policy Forum. Our present and future generations, however, will face a different gamut of decisions and challenges. Social stresses exist globally and this emanates, at least in part, from inequality. As a small and open city-state, Singapore is more exposed to emergent pressures surrounding what I term the 3 ‘D’s – Disruption, S.S. Teo Chairman, SBF Demographics and Dissatisfaction. Our Government has rolled out concerted policies and initiatives to tackle issues related to inequality, and will continue to do so. These children and youths are beneficiaries of the Business Times Budding Artists’ Fund (BT BAF), the recipients of the year-end annual charity fundraiser. “ChariTrees’ 20 traditional Christmas trees and 10 “Art” trees are dedicated to the many individuals, groups and organisations which have made a positive impact towards our community”, said Mr Tan Puay Kern, chairman of the ChariTrees 2018 Organising Committee.
