Our residents in need have been assisted through kind sponsorships and support from corporations. Science Explorers’ Camp for instance, has been a popular fixture with the youths. The programme that aims to spark the interest of our underprivileged students in Life Sciences received $37,000 in sponsorship from Applied Materials South East Asia Pte Ltd. Their contribution aims to benefit 500 students throughout the district.

Organisations such as Zhi Zhen Tan Dao Xue Hui (Singapore) [新加坡旨真坛道学会] (ZZT) too have been generous with our residents since 2010. Children from the underprivileged background have been receiving extra pocket money from the North East School Meal Fund. The charity has been supporting this fund to ease the financial constraints of the affected families. ZZT also treated our underprivileged elderly to their annual charity dinners, among their many other contributions to the district.

NTUC FairPrice Foundation committed to a 3-year “Wish Upon A Silver Star” campaign with a $150,000 contribution. Started in 2013, the fund raising campaign seeks to benefit approximately 600 residents from the low income background. There are many other individual donors and sponsors that have been the backbone in ensuring the continuity of our programmes. There are no words to express our gratitude. We received more than $2million in contributions last year and every single dollar goes a long way. WeCare @ North East Fund aims to fill the gap by helping needy families within the district who are not eligible for assistance because they do not meet the national gross household income criteria. Beneficiaries can tap on the fund to tide them over sudden or one-time emergencies, such as school fees, utilities arrears or urgent medical situations. Dedicated North East Ambulance Services Strengthening Social (DNA) Support DNA provides subsidised or free ambulance service for needy residents who are immobile or wheelchair-bound for medical appointment/dialysis sessions. CEP is a 6-month interim community employment programme that aims to help low-income northeast residents who are looking for a job to earn some allowance while they continue with their job search. It also hopes to help this group of job seekers who are facing challenges in securing a job, recover their self confidence and self esteem. While these jobseekers are placed in CEP, the relevant employment agencies will continue to assist them to secure suitable permanent employment. Community Vouchers Programme

This programme helps to defray the living expenses of our underprivileged and low income families. A joint effort between North East CDC, Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC), the Community Development and Welfare Fund (CDWF) as well as local merchants from the respective divisions, the community vouchers enables eligible residents to offset the costs of products and services at business establishments in the neighbourhood. 8 Café Corners

Started out with only two café corners in Punggol Central in April 2013, a place for residents to bond and relax, the initiative has now expanded to provide interim employment opportunities under the Community Employment Programme (CEP). Job seekers, mainly elderly are hired to manage the café corners and upkeep the cleanliness. As of March 2014 there are 51 café corners throughout the entire North East district. Various activities are held to encourage residents to get to know their neighbours better.

Community Resource Corner (CRC)

The objective of the CRC is to provide convenience to the residents who does not own, but may need to use household items such as electric drills, ladder, trolley and power extension cable. These items are available for loan at the Residents’ Committee (RCs). In addition, residents are also encouraged to donate household items to the RC, and thus creating a platform for residents to help residents. 16 Family Empowerment Series

Speakers from USA, Bob and Kelly Parr conducted a series of parenting workshop in 2013. Due to the overwhelming response, NE CDC together with Tampines FSC invited Bob and Kelly Parr back to Singapore to conduct another series of workshops, titled “Family Empowerment”. The workshop included topics for dads, parents, community leaders, FSC staff and single parents. Elderly learnt about managing their finances, the different types of insurance coverage available for them and investment after retirement. They were also given advice on understanding relevant legal documents, as well as will writing. The quarterly newsletter produced by NE CDC were distributed from April 2013 through March 2014. With 243,000 copies of Heartbeat distributed throughout the North East district, readers were kept abreast with ground events and NE CDC programmes. The newsletter included information on new developments and highlights Grassroots Advisers. There were also segments on career advice and new recipes.
