TOP SPRINTERS HEADED TO JAPAN

BONAPAW BOUND FOR BREEDERS’ CUP
Bonapaw (Sabona), winner of Saturday’s GI
Vosburgh S. at Belmont Park, will make his next start in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Arlington Park Oct. 26. Immediately after his Vosburgh victory, his connections seemed to be leaning toward skipping the $1 million event, but, at the time, they believed the gelding would have to be supplemented to the race for $200,000. But the Breeders’ Cup Ltd. contacted owner Dennis Richard Monday morning to let him know that the supplementary fee for Bonapaw is, in fact, $90,000. “Dennis called me after that call from the Breeders’ Cup and said, ‘$90,000...I can go into my pocket for that,’” trainer Norman Miller III said. uled to prep for this year’s Sprint in the GIII Phoenix Breeders’ Cup H. Oct. 5, but an undisclosed offer from the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association may lead to the four-year-old being immediately retired. “He’s in fine shape and just had a good workout,” owner David

Lanzman told The Blood-Horse. “I've been receiving offers for him ever since he broke his maiden. I told my friends that if I ever get this [amount], I'll sell him. Well, I got it.” Lanzman purchased the dark bay colt for $25,000 at the Barretts March Sale; in addition to his Breeders’ Cup victory, Squirtle Squirt captured the GI King’s Bishop S. and the GIII Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. while compiling a record of 16-8-4-0 for earnings of $1,112,220 to date. The four-year-old sustained a knee chip when second in the GII Palos Verdes H. Jan. 27 and has made just one start since, running fourth to Orientate in the GI Forego H. Sept. 1.

New Stallion for Shadai...
Shadai Stallion Station, which lost a trio of stallions including End Sweep this summer, will acquire the Forty Niner stallion’s most accomplished offspring. Swept Overboard, a $525,000 OBSFEB purchase, was a graded-stakes winner before selling for $700,000 in July of his three-year-old season at the 505 Farms dispersal. For new owner J. Paul Reddam, the grey defeated Kona Gold in the GI Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup H. last October before running fourth to Squirtle Squirt in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Off since his impressive victory in the GI Met Mile May 27, he is currently training for the Ancient Title and will close out his career in the Breeders’ Cup. The Florida bred has bankrolled $1,125,205 to date, with a record of 18-8-5-3.

The third table lists 41 sires with 15 or more yearlings catalogued among the three sales combined; interestingly, three of them stand in Kentucky--Ashford stallions King of Kings (2yos), and Stravinksy (yearlings), and Mill Ridge’s Diesis. You’ll perhaps not be shocked to hear that six of the eight stallions with the most catalogued stand at Coolmore; the other two are first-crop sires Cape Cross and Intikhab. But what is a little surprising is that the overall leader is none other than the great Sadler’s Wells: he has 59 yearlings catalogued in the three sales, of which 34 are at Houghton-over 17 percent of the catalogue. That’s about one Sadler’s Wells every 15 or 20 minutes. Go get ‘em.

SIPHONIC SET FOR COMEBACK Three-year-old
Siphonic (Siphon {Brz}), unraced since finishing third in the Mar. 17 GII San Felipe S., will make his next start “any day now,” said co-owner John Amerman.
KEENELAND CATALOGS 3,597 FOR NOVEMBER
Keeneland will catalog 3,597 horses for its November Breeding Stock Sale. The auction, scheduled to run from Nov. 4 through 13, will include 1,951
Amerman said he and trainer David Hofmans are hoping to find a race toward the beginning of the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita, which begins next Wednesday. Considered a top prospect for the Kentucky Derby after he won last year's GI Hollywood Futurity, Siphonic was taken off the Triple Crown trail due to wear and tear. “He had twisted his neck, which was causing a little bit of an issue with an ankle,” Amerman said. “There were no major problems, but he needed time off and we decided not to proceed down the Derby trail.” Amerman said there are no plans to try to make a Breeders' Cup race with Siphonic. Rather, he said, the main goal will be the Strub Series, which begins with the Dec. 26 GI Malibu at Santa Anita. “He's bigger and stronger,” he said. “I'm delighted we made the good business decision to back off when we did.” broodmares, 146 broodmare prospects, 1,339 weanlings and 161 horses of other ages and types. The number of horses catalogued this year is down due to the effects of Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome. “Last year, breeders, frustrated by MRLS, sold many of their barren mares,” commented Tom Thornbury, Keeneland’s associate director of sales. “Most of the mares in this year’s catalog are safely in foal, making them much more attractive to purchasers.” Mares expected to sell are in foal to such stallions as A.P. Indy, Danzig, Deputy Minister, Elusive Quality, Forestry, Fusaichi Pegasus, Giant’s Causeway, Gone West, Kingmambo, Monarchos, Point Given, Storm Cat and Thunder Gulch. Also featured are weanlings by such sires as Pulpit, Seattle Slew and Seeking the Gold. Keeneland will also catalog 180 horses for its second annual October Yearling Sale, scheduled for Oct. 15. “The October Sale will give people who were unable to purchase in September a chance to buy a quality yearling,” Thornbury said. “We consider this a ‘trainer’s sale,’ and we will be dropping catalogs off at their barns.” Yearlings will be offered by Affirmed, Awesome Again, Belong to Me, Conquistador Cielo, Elusive Quality, Forestry, Gentlemen (Arg), Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley, Siphon (Brz), Tactical Cat, Thunder Gulch and Unbridled’s Song.
MAGIC WEISNER ON THE MEND Preakness
runner-up Magic Weisner (Ameri Valay) has nearly completely recovered from a recent bout with West Nile virus and could return to training in a matter of weeks, Thoroughbred Times reports. Scratched from the GIII Pennsylvania Derby when he spiked a fever, the bay gelding was sent to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center after showing signs of neurological disorders. Owned, bred and trained by Nancy Alberts, the GII Ohio Derby winner was released and returned to his stall at Laurel Park Sept. 14. “He is very bright and is progressing as expected,” Maryland veterinarian Bob Vallance told Thoroughbred Times. “We hope he can return to training in about three weeks.” Second to War Emblem in the GI Haskell H. in his most recent start, Magic Weisner has won seven of his 14 career outings for earnings of $888,110.
HONOR GLIDE TO CLOVERLEAF Honor Glide
(Honor Grades--Becky Branch {Ire}, by Run the Gantlet), a multiple Grade I winner of $1,397,187, will take up stud duties next season at Cloverleaf Farms II in Reddick, Florida. The eight-year-old became the first three-year-old since Buckpasser in 1966 to sweep the Turf Triple Crown when he won the GI Secretariat S., GII American Derby and GII Arlington Classic in 1997. He also won the 1999 GI Sword Dancer Invitational, 2001 GII Niagara Breeders’ Cup H., and 1999 GII Bowling Green H. Honor Glide hit the board in 18 of 38 starts, with 11 victories. Owned by Bonnie Heath Farm, Honor Glide will stand for $4,000, live foal.

BORN SOMETHING (IRE) (f, 4, Caerleon--Born Gold, by Blushing Groom {Fr}) looked like something special in
posting this victory. The full to Gold Round (Ire), GSW-Fr, started her career in France, where she ran third in the G3 Prix de la Grotte before concluding her three-year-old campaign with a sixth to Banks Hill (GB) in the G2 Prix de Sandringham last June. The chestnut filly had to wait some time for her U.S. bow due to inclement weather, but finally raced at Saratoga Sept. 1, finishing third in an allowance. Jockey Jose Santos had the 8-5 favorite under a snug hold early, but let her run on the far turn and the Irish-bred responded, circling the field five wide before drawing off impressively by 4 1/4 lengths. JEH Stallion Station Purchases Shah Jehan:
I W E S T I
Shah Jehan (Mr. Prospector), a $4.4 million yearling purchase at the 2000 Keeneland September sale, has been purchased by the JEH Stallion Station of Jim Helzer from Susan Magnier for an undisclosed sum, according to Thoroughbred Times. The threeyear-old son of Grade III winner Voodoo Lady (Baldski) has been a disappointment on the racetrack, with just two wins from 14 starts to date, but has managed runner-up finishes in the GIII Withers S. and GIII Long Branch Breeders’ Cup S. Additionally, the bay finished second to subsequent GI Belmont S. winner Sarava in the Sir Barton S. at Pimlico. Helzer is philosophical about the purchase. “This has the potential to be a win-win situation,” he told Thor- oughbred Times, adding that trainer D. Wayne Lukas recommended the colt to him. “We already have a great stallion prospect, but if he turns things around and has a strong four-year-old year, then that’s even better.” Shah Jehan was most recently ninth of 11 in the GIII Kentucky Cup Sprint Sept. 21.
