FIGURES UP AT INGLIS CLASSIC SALE THE MAKING OF The opening session of Inglis=s three-day Classic Yearling Sale DUAL-HEMISPHERE STARS posted positive results Saturday evening in Sydney, with increases for most figures. Hosted as an evening session for the first time after racing at Randwick, the session saw 97 offered and 78 sold for a total of A$4,411,000, compared to 136 sold for A$6,143,000 on last year=s opening day. The buyback rate climbed almost four points to 19.6%; however, the average and median both experienced significant gains, up 25.2% to A$56,551 and 18.4% to A$45,000, respectively. The competitiveness of the buying bench was underlined by the fact that 70 different buyers signing for the 78 yearlings sold. Popularity in the sire ranks also proved diverse, with the top 13 yearlings on the day being by 12 different . Cont. p4

However, up until the final years of the 20th century, if a stallion was to take high rank in both hemispheres, he had do so in two separate chapters of his stud career. Once it became practice, however, to shuttle stallions regularly back and forward across the equator, the dual-hemisphere star could reign in both hemispheres simultaneously--as Danehill (Danzig) did so effectively. Danehill won the first of his eight Australian General Sires' Premierships in 1994/95. That signified really quick-fire success, as in that season the members of his first Australian crop--which included the 1994 Golden Slipper winner Danzero (Aus)--were still aged only three. Success came slightly less quickly in Europe: he registered the first of his four GB/Ire general sires' championships in 2003, when his representatives were headed by the Derby winner (Ire). After toying with the idea of a run in last year’s Donn--ultimately won by his stablemate Constitution (Tapit)--Mshawish instead took his place in the GI Gulfstream Park Turf H. and duly obliged with a nose victory. Fast forward to 2016. He traveled like a winner most of the way that day, leading home a 1-2 finish for his sire with a neck defeat of Valid. This time around, the nine-furlong Grade I on grass was never a serious consideration, as a win in a race as prestigious as the Donn would go a long ways towards cementing his future as a stallion prospect. Halfbridled (Unbridled). “I was pretty happy,” said Todd Pletcher, winning the Donn for the fourth time since 2010. “I loved the way he finished up at a mile and an eighth. That was kind of the one thing we were looking to prove that he could stay a mile and an eighth on the dirt. I actually thought he ran the best race of his career really, and he’s run some good ones before that. It was good to see him finish up like that. He got a great trip. Johnny gave him a great ride and he delivered a big performance.” Keen Ice worked home his final three-eighths of a mile in just over :36. He is expected to travel to Dubai for the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 26, where he is likely to face a rematch with Mshawish over a 10-furlong trip that is up his alley and one that remains a question mark for Mshawish. The Donn winner is also entered for the G1 Dubai Turf and G2 Godolphin Mile. “The speed was holding pretty good today,” Castellano offered. “It was hard to come from behind. But I liked the way he did it today because he came running the last part. I know an extra furlong he could get it done. He passed the wire galloping out strong and passed the other horses. I couldn’t pull him up. A mile and a quarter will be good for him.” Adam Coglianese photo HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 14 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • FEB. 7, 2016

Jan. 16, drilled five furlongs Saturday morning in 1:00 flat in advance of a start in the GII Risen Star S. at the Fair Grounds Feb. 20. “It was very good,” trainer Dallas Stewart said. “He was a little sharp early, but he finished strong and galloped out pretty good. A near-miss second in a Dec. 18 allowance test in New Orleans, Tom’s Ready led into the final furlong of the Lecomte, only to be outfinished by Mo Tom. “He’ll work again--another five-eighths--next Saturday or Sunday,” said Stewart, who indicated that John Velazquez had accepted the riding assignment. “We know he’s a nice horse. He needs to train like he’s that type of horse. The game is stepping up and he has to step up with it.” Mo Tom, trained for the Bensons by Tom Amoss, went five- eighths of a mile in 1:01 Saturday morning.
