Making ‘fritters with English’: Functions of Early Modern Welsh Dialect on the English Stage by Caitlin Thompson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Caitlin Thompson 2019 Making ‘fritters with English’: Functions of Early Modern Welsh Dialect on the English Stage Caitlin Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies University of Toronto 2019 ABSTRACT The Welsh had a unique status as paradoxically familiar ‘foreigners’ throughout early modern London; Henry VIII actively suppressed the use of the Welsh language, even though many in the Tudor line selectively boasted of Welsh ancestry. Still, in the late-sixteenth century, there was a surge in London’s Welsh population which coincided with the establishment of the city’s commercial theatres. This timely development created a stage for English playwrights to dramatically enact the complicated relationship between the nominally unified nations. Welsh difference was often made theatrically manifest through specific dialect conventions or codified and inscrutable approximate Welsh language. This dissertation expands upon critical readings of Welsh characters written for the English stage by scholars such as Philip Schwyzer, Willy Maley, and Marissa Cull, to concentrate on the vocal and physical embodiments of performed Welshness and their functions in contemporary drama. This work begins with a historicist reading of literary and political Anglo-Welsh relations to build a clear picture of the socio-historical context from which Welsh characters of the period were constructed. The plays which form the focus of this work range from popular plays like Shakespeare’s Henry V (1599) to lesser-known works from Thomas Nashe’s Summer’s Last Will and Testament (1592) to Thomas Dekker’s The Welsh Embassador ii (1623) which illuminate the range of Welsh presentations in early modern England. -

The Letters of John Forster to Thomas Carlyle
“The supreme comfort of your presence”: The Letters of John Forster to Thomas Carlyle, PART 1 TRANSCRIBED AND ANNOTATED BY KENNETH J. FIELDING AND DAVID R. SORENSEN n 1998 the late Professor Kenneth J. Fielding began to transcribe letters of John Forster to Thomas Carlyle that Iwere held by the Armstrong Browning Library in Waco, Texas. The Forster materials formed part of the extensive Harlan collection of books and manuscripts, which had been donated to the Library by the scholars, editors, and bibliophiles Aurelia Brooks Harlan (1899–1991) and her husband, J. Lee Harlan, Jr. Aurelia Brooks Harlan was the daughter of Samuel Palmer Brooks (1863–1931), president of Baylor University from 1902–31, and his wife Mattie Sims Brooks (1868–1940). Fielding was unable to complete the transcriptions, and following his death in 2005, David R. Sorensen inherited Fielding’s complete set of photocopies of the Forster-Carlyle correspondence. The editors are grateful to Rita S. Patteson, Director of the Armstrong Browning Library, for generously granting permission to publish transcriptions of these letters in numbers 31 and 32 of the Carlyle Studies Annual. SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date. -

Rolf Soellner TIMON OF ATHENS Shakespeare's Pessimistic Tragedy $15.50 TIMON OF ATHENS Shakespeare's Pessimistic Tragedy By Rolf Soellner With a Stage History by Gary Jay Williams Perhaps the most problematical of Shake speare's tragedies opens on a distinctly ominous if nonetheless casual note. A poet and a painter meet and, after exchanging greetings, the former asks, "How goes the world?" Whereupon the painter replies, "It wears, sir, as it grows" — to which the poet responds, as to a cliche, "Ay, that's well known." The notion of the world's decay, a sur vivor of the contempus mundi of medieval philosophy, with its groundings in concep tions of the Fall and Last Judgment, achieved a renewed ascendancy in the dark ening climate of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. And it is, Professor Soellner points out, only in the mood and tenor engendered by this pervasive pes simism, which many critics of Timon have found uncongenial, that we can come fully to understand Shakespeare's misanthrope, who has been much maligned as the inferior of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and Lear, but who is, if not entirely their equal, an authen tic tragic hero in his own right. Professor Soellner accepts Timon as a tragedy, albeit one that does not necessarily satisfy standard definitions; and though he readily concedes that there are sporadic tex tual deficiencies, he finds in the structure of the play, its characterization, imagery, and thematic development, the imprint of Shakespeare's incomparable genius and the indisputable evidence of the drama's having been meticulously worked out in conformity with a controlling and high tragic design. -

Transfers can be made onto CDs (UK) on request – please allow adequate time / advance notice. Please order by title of talk or broadcast. As duplicates exist only for the more popular items, it would be appreciated if an alternative choice could be given, where possible. If specific tapes are required for definite dates of branch/group meetings, etc., please reserve well in advance. When ordering please print: Your full name, address, including postal code, in BLOCK CAPITALS. Periods of hire: U.K. and Europe: up to 14 days. Overseas: up to 4 weeks.
